“Lack of customer relations let it down”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

Stayed just the one night for a show at the BIC. First impression was good as we were allowed into the room before the stated check in time as the room was ready. However we were slightly disappointed with the size of room, the double bed was pushed against the wall and the bathroom was no more than a 'cloakroom' size with a shower and very small sink with no shelf. This room was in fact too small to change in. Having said that it was very clean.
The hotel info in the room said Internet wi fi code was available free from reception but when we asked were told this info was incorrect and it was £7. We did complain that their info was misleading and to be fair they apologised and said they would look into it. As it wasn't particularly important to us we did not pursue it further.
The hotel has a 'leisure centre' which consists of a small pool, sauna and gym in the basement, accessed through the bar. You need to get an entry code for the door from reception together with a locker key for a whopping £5 deposit. Be warned, the changing area is tiny and the showers cold although it has been newly decorated. The sauna was Only warm to say the least. We did not try the workout equip but Overall we felt these leisure facilities were not worth the bother.
During the afternoon of our visit the bar was not fully attended and we were to ask at reception for someone to come and serve! Later after returning from the show we found there was barman but he didn't smile and was unresponsive with our attempt to engage in conversation.
We booked breakfast at check in for a cost of £8 pp. Upon arrival we were left standing at the entrance to offer our room number but were totally ignored by the one visible member of staff who was busying herself setting tables for a very empty restaurant. Breakfast commenced at 8am and we arrived at 8.45 am and was buffet style. Selection of cereals, fruit, pastries and full English was on offer. Clearly we were one of the first as the cooked food had been standing sometime and was dry. I think it was a matter of timing; as the restaurant filled up more freshly prepared food was offered.
All in all this hotel was nicely located in a quiet area only 10 mins walk from the BIC and shops. It was clean and value for money. Lack of customer relations from their staff is what lets it down and this could be so simply fixed.

I had a wonderful time at the Durley Dean. The staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble for them.

“A relaxing Christmas stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

2nd stay here, booked 2 refurbished rooms - although quite small, clean and comfortable. Our double glazed window had a big gap causing wind to blow curtains about - filled the gap with tissue paper and hey presto no draught. It was a bonus being able to be able to park for free in hotels car park - left the car parked for 3 days and walked into town or along the seafront. Breakfast buffet was good, and service and food in evening was good, although the quality of the food did not seem quite as good as previous year. The big disappointment was the entertainment (or lack of it) although there were 4 large coach parties there was very little entertainment apart from bingo and horseracing and it was very cold in the function room where this was held. Not recommended for anyone under the age of 75 during the Xmas period

Room Tip: Refurbished rooms recommended

“no better than ok”

I needed a late seven night stay and the Durley was about the only one left with rooms as it spanned the new year..The room was spacious and clean but there endeth the good news, there was no chest of drawers so unpacking was resticted to what could be hung up,there was a flat roof right outside the window that had a variety of rubbish on it including fag ends bottle tops and two pairs of underpants! The pool and sauna which I thought would be nice were closed. On the first night we ate in but it was not good, frozen very cheap veg and ok gammon, breakfast was worse with the cheapest nastiest ingredients possible and to add insult they wanted eight pounds per person for it.We did not have any further meals in until the last day when I wanted a light lunch,Iwent for a club sandwich foolishly thinking that it was a safe bet.two or three small pieces of dried out chicken two slices of bacon that I would swear were left over from breakfast, some limp lettuce and two slices of nasty cheap brownbread at a cost of nine pounds is a joke.I never normally write reviews but I was saddened by this experience and actually left a day early.

“Excellent family rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

This is our 3rd stay here we use it as it is convenient for the shops BIC and beach. Family rooms are an excellent size with adjoining rooms with bunk beds for children, they also have a shower and toilet. The hotel can be very hot at times but the staff are friendly and helpful if you ask reception anything. The standard double rooms are hit and miss on the size some you can just about walk around the bed others are more spacious, there does not seem to be a price structure to the size it is just luck of the draw !
Food at the hotel is satisfactory serve yourself breakfast and a carvery style evening meal. You can generally get a cheaper evening meal if you book and pay before your stay saving a few pounds per person per night.
It is a nice walk downhill into the town but quite a steep uphill climb back - although a taxi from the town centre taxi rank costs about £4.00 so not too expensive.
The gym equipment is not very well maintained and only one treadmill out of three works. There is no water machine in the gym.
