“Shocking”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 February 2011

Stayed here for £12.50 a night so didnt expect a lot, small room, bunk bed etc but what do you expect for that money. however it was very very clean, and the shower was lovely, as there were only 3 parties in that night we each had a floor to ourselves which was lovely. Spent a couple hours playing pool and watching the large screen telly which was nice. At 8pm the receptionsit left, leaving the hotel next doors door open for us to enter/leave through. not once did i get asked for my room key or proof that i was staying there, despite it being a different member of staff each time! This made me very uncomfortable and couldnt sleep due to the fear that someone was going to come in! Bunk beds arnt much good if your over 5'6ish! my feet kept sticking out of the end and getting stuck!
The car park was free - (permit given) BUT is behind a night club with not a particularly good CCTV camera (ie its facing the wrong way!) Luckily when i went the club was closed, but i wouldnt leave my car there if it was open!
Our room was in the bassment, Our nearest fire exit was almost 150 steps ... and up 2 flights of stairs ... our nearest fire alarm (just outside of the door) was boarded off, as was another we passed on the way, fire extinguisher was also not attached and looked used.
Also only one double plug - no more expected for a room that size but not handy when you have hairdryer/straightners/phone chargers/laptops all needing to be plugged it!
Also didnt appreciate the pictures of drunk people and half naked girls that seemed to be everywhwere advertising nights out /clubs and pubs.
Value for money wise its pretty good, BUT i felt very unsafe staying here.
Improvement needed

“Awesome!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2010

Honestly, do not listen to the bad reviews you read on Berties Lodge - they are obviously asking for wayyyyy too much for what they paid. I came back yesterday from an awesome Bank Holiday weekend in Newquay. Overall, there was 12 of us and the everyone but one of us stayed at Berties Lodge. Let me just say - the £50 deposit was not a surprise at all! We were told way in advance that we had to pay a £50 deposit each, one on the phone and two on the confirmation letter we received when we booked - and if you behave and don't break anything then you will get it back no probs. Anywhere you go you have to pay a deposit as obviously nobody wants anything broken!
Our check-in time was 3pm but we had arrived earlier into Newquay to avoid traffic. We had a drink in the Berties bar about 11am and they said we could check in earlier if we wanted! So that was handy! We got a really warm welcome from the girl behind reception, not sure of her name but she was lovely and really laid back! Got to the rooms and they were just what we wanted! Really good size and clean bathrooms (they actually only have showers). Some rooms didnt have a great view - but if you are there for the view then you would pay more to stay somewhere on the coastline but saying this, alot of rooms did have good views! There were was a communal lounge area with a tv, sofas, pool table and a balcony - it was perfect! We were allowed to buy our own drinks and have a few before we would hit the bars. In the morning, it was a bit of a mess, like sticky floors were some people had accidently split them - but its like the lodge had expected this and were fine and cleaned it up straight away the next morning which was good!
Check out was 10.30am but by the time some of us had eventually woken up and packed our stuff its was about quarter past 11 we checked out - and they were absolutely fine with this!
Overall, I would definitely recommend staying here! It's clean, great staff, great rooms and great location. If you are looking for a lively time in Newquay, this place is great! This review is coming from a range of 21 - 23 year olds who were looking for a lively bank holiday weekend. We will definitely be going back and will definitely be staying in Berties Lodge again!! Thanks to everyone at Berties!!

“what a dump”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2010

Staff very rude and demanded £50 each deposit for rooms 7 in a room the size of a small bedroom in a semi. doors wouldn't close only one plug fitting worked. no vetilation very noisey location 24/7 Staff spoke to members of the group like dirt until i the eldest member of the group spoke up then all we received was appoligies. to little too late. 350 deposit per room. cost of tacky fittings in the room would only come to £80 if that bunk beds fastend together with zip ties. very unhelpful staff. never to visit again. the whole attitude and condition of the accomidation put a downer on my sons stag weekend. Better off booking into a nearby caravan park.

“Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 April 2010

After deciding on a last minute surf trip, I was left with the task of finding a cheap hotel room where I could check in very early as the over night bus got me in at 7am and also check out late on the day of departure as wanted to surf the whole day and not worry about storage of my gear.
Emailed Berties lodge to explain this had a very quick response from Jodie saying that this wouldn't be a problem. After phoning and paying for the room had a confirmation email come through this did explain about the £30 bond and no towels provided.
On arrival was meet but a friendly receptionist who kindly showed me to the room.
Room was clean and tidy with En Suite and even had nice LCD Tv on the wall.
Very happy. Hotel is well located for pubs and clubs, very close to the town beaches, Fistral is about a 10 min walk away.
On check out, they kept all my gear safe untill 5pm even though check out was from 10:30.
Excellent Service, Clean Room, nice location. Cheap £17.50 per night. Going back in October and will be booking with them again.

“Just what we wanted!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2010

Having read some of the reviews on here, we were slightly apprehensive about staying in Berties... but when we got home, we just wanted to go back!! Having gone after we had friends staying in other lodges at the same time, but Berties was by far the best!

Admittedly we did have a very large room which for 6 people was a bonus.. (tip: the normal rooms are quite small, so if you can ask for the huge disabled room!) the bathroom was clean and thank god there was a power shower! Beds were fine, white sheets, no dodgy wooden bunk beds, the mattresses weren't exactly comfortable... but how much sleeping do you intend on doing?! Flat screen TVs in every room, full length mirrors, carpet was pretty disgusting... not aided by the amount of beer spilt- but we still got our bonds back!! We were worried about losing the £50 but just had a thorough clear up in the hour before we left and things were fine- and if you really get desperate there's a maid every morning doing other rooms who doesn't mind hovering up a bit... Also there’s a kind of communal area with really nice sofas, pool table, and big TV- this place is a must!

Location is perfect, right on the high street, loads of bars and clubs around, beach just down the road, really good under 18s nights (foam party not to be missed!) it’s got everything! The only downside to our stay here was that at about 11pm, if the night guard didn’t turn up they lock up Berties and you have to access it through the neighbouring hotel Victoria... which was fine but just a bit inconvenient! What more can I say?! Berties is an absolute gem.
