I say cheap but that's relative. It was cheap for the area for the time of year but not actually low cost.
The pluses:
Friendly staff, expecially the ladies serving the food, very accomodating and polite.
Hearty food. A strong 'pub fayre' menu with good vegetarian selection. I had chicken with cheese, bacon and bbq sauce with jacket potato served with salad, peas, onion rings and mushrooms. Good value, huge portion and well cooked. Couldn't fault it. Full English was the main offering but they were very accomodating with my requests for 1. beans on toast with bacon 2. poached egg on toast 3. scrambled egg and bacon. There was also cereal and toast, juice, tea & coffee - but my request for some fruit was met with perplextion. They did kindly locate me a fruit yogurt though.
Very close to a nice sandy beach, about 100 yards down the lane. Porth is a small place with a pub on the beach, a tapas bar and a couple of seaside shops. The beach is sandy and has surf, you can hire surf boards and wetsuits. There was also a kiosk for chips and the like and an ice cream stall up the hill a little. It's a much smaller beach than Newquay. Great for kids.
Entertainement facilities on site. There is a 10 pin bowling alley (free to residents before lunch) and some pool tables.
Nice soft fluffy towels and also complimentary toiletries.
Wifi available but in limited areas, doesn't cover all rooms.
Plenty of free off street parking
The minuses:
Noisy. My room was over the main entrance, overlooking the beer garden/car park (it seemed to be a multi-functioning space), at the top of the stairs opposite the (heavy) fire door. Noise came at me well into the night from all directions. The walls aren't thick, the floor boards noisy (and loose, my bed bounced every time someone walked past my room) and the pipes were also noisy, especially in the dead of night!.
The room was basic and cheaply appointed. No net curtains which, as the windows were low and I was overlooking the main entrance, meant having to keep the curtains closed and the lights on or be watched. The bathroom only had a blind, no frosted glass, and the window was huge. You could sit on the loo and converse with people in the 'garden' if you so chose. The shower wasn't clean - black mould on the sealant and someone elses hairs greeted me. The bin wasn't emptied prior to my arrival. The kettle could not be turned off without unplugging it (I eventually reaslised what the incessant rumbling noise was before it boiled dry, phew!). One of the lamps wasn't connected to any power. Shabbily decorated throughout although effort had clearly been made with design.
I don't think I would personally visit again as it's just not me but there were lots of other people there who seemed to be enjoying it so I guess it's whether you're into that kind of place of not. I spent the night before I arrived in a youth hostel and it was definitely cleaner and quieter but personally I would choose a Travel Lodge/Permier Inn over somewhere like this.
