“Pleasant stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2011

Spent one night at this Bristol B&B and have to say that it was very clean, tastefully decorated and good shower facilities available. Breakfast was served far too early for a Sunday morning though between 7.30-8.30a.m., but did find it very strange that it is served direct in your room, which some of you may like. Adequate full English though. Tea making facilities and TV in the room. Unfortunately the parking may cause you concern. Being on a main road, parking was very limited and had to go up and down the road a few times. On the whole, good value for money and very pleasant stay.

“Perfect location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

I stayed at the Belgrave after a party nearby, so was able to walk back. The terrace room at the back was extremely comfortable, with a lovely view over Bristol, so I was able to relax with a drink there after the drive. The clincher for me was the fact the excellent breakfast is served to you in your room, and as I was travelling alone I really appreciated being able to enjoy this, again on the terrace, in the morning sunshine.Very nice owners.

Room Tip: Terrace room at the back is lovely.

“Hot off the press...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

A recent review in Time Out's 'Weekend Breaks' prompted a visit to the Belgrave. You're assured of a warm, no-nonsense welcome from the formidable owner, Kay, in her prime location guest house. A little frayed around the edges (missing light bulbs, rather untidy hallway & broken fittings) rooms are nonetheless clean with good bedding, restrained decor and breakfast served in situ. The Belgrave's close to the stunning Suspension Bridge, bracing walks on the Downs & the many charms of Clifton Village but the star of the show is the 'artist in residence' herself - Kay. Think Beryl Cook in a Victoria Wood sketch and there's surely a sitcom in the making here. Go experience!

“Good, old-fashioned independent B&B”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2011

This wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea as a place to stay but it's a spotlessly clean, very distinctive old house run by a down-to-earth couple. The landlady - Kay - is chatty but fun. We had a big room at the back, in the basement, with its own terrace and a great view over the City. Being at the back it was very quiet from external noise but internal walls and floors don't provide much soundproofing so we heard the couple in the neighbouring room come in very clearly, and could hear people moving about and talking in the kitchen above us. Not a problem as none of them were late. Twin beds were comfortable. Tea and coffee in the room. Breakfast served in the room, at the time we asked. We had one full English and one vegetarian. Portions not massive but proper delicious home cooking. We would have eaten on the terrace had it been a warmer day.

Room Tip: Back better than front for noise. Downstairs back has own terrace.

“"Quirky" landlady with a huge list of do's and don'ts”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2011

Beautifully kept B&B with a "quirky" landlady. If you want peace and privacy, this is not the place for you.

Kay loves to talk - upon arrival you will be greeted with a thinly-veiled list of do's and don'ts, conveyed via her many stories of "nightmare guests" (Heaven forbid if you are one). You will be shown how to use the badly-designed bath / shower and given warnings not to flood her kitchen. Best not to have a shower, we found, as you have to sit down in the large bath tub to shower, and water still goes everywhere. The bath room was big enough to have housed a shower cubicle if it had been designed better.

No hairdryer in the room so it's a good job I had brought my own.

If you are happy at the idea of leaving your bedroom door ajar in the night, so that your breakfast may be delivered in to your room without delay in the morning, then be prepared for it to arrive 15 minutes early, and forget any thoughts of privacy. Once breakfast is delivered, rather than making a discreet exit, the landlady stands in your room making conversation. Maybe that's why the toast was cold and hard by the time we got around to eating it. Not the greatest breakfast in the world, a bit mean on the amounts, and to be honest I would prefer to eat in a breakfast room at a time of my own choosing, than be imposed upon in your own bedroom, no matter how well-intentioned it is.

Room was not quiet due to a combination of traffic noise and people walking past being noisy. It would be better to have a room at the back overlooking the great view.

It was not especially good value for money, there were hotel rooms available in Bristol city centre at the same price. However, parking here was free and on-street. No problem finding a space.

If we visit Bristol again I would prefer to stay in a hotel or a B&B in a quieter spot, with someone a little more relaxed about letting people in to their home. Kay is obviously very houseproud but if you value your privacy and hate too many "rules and regulations" then this is not the place for you.

Sorry if this sounds like a moan but it really was a lovely place and very well kept. Wouldn't recommend it for young people or couples wanting a romantic getaway. Older guests will love the place, and the personal service and attention given.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the house - beautiful far reaching views over the back but busy road a...
