This B & B is actually on the Downs and is on Hollybush Lane which is the access road to part of Wills and Durdham Hall, and is walking distance to the other 'Downs' uni residences. It is very clean and quaint; parking is easy. Our room (the Garden Room I think) was gorgeous and old fashioned, with 3 windows overlooking gardens. I had a brilliant hour resting in the afternoon reading a book and completely undisturbed.
It is not a hotel, so don't think you will get hotel style stuff. Having said that, the bed was comfy, very clean, luxurous pillows and I had a great nights sleep. The shower room we had (en suite) was very cold and we could not work out how to use the shower. I would still stay here again. The night we were there was a freakishly cold night so I think mostly this 'cold' thing would not happen. When the central heating was on the room was very warm very fast. But if this bothers you ask for a different room (some are not ensuite I believe).
There are art works everywhere. The house is lovely, in fact there are 2 houses very close to each other. Breakfast was served in a lovely dining room at a large table - time for eating was up to you so you may end up at a table with other guests at the other end, but we did not and had the place to ourselves.
Breakfast was fantastic - we had porridge and poached eggs on toast with juice, herbal tea and ordinary tea. Meaty and fishy stuff was on offer for those who like bacon and haddock etc. The food was beautifully cooked and presented, with piles of toast and a huge selection of jams and marmalades and even nutella.
The place is run (I think) by people with experience in running high class establishments (5 star hotels) and now retired. I took this into account when booking in, with a person that had impeccable manners and his own way of doing things.
I found this place to be so perfect I would come again but don't if you are a whiner; it would spoil the ambience.
This location was particularly useful for visiting our daughter who is a student at Bristol Uni and stays at Durdham Hall. I have not found any other hotel anywhere nearby (lots 5 or more miles away): this one is just a short stroll, and on the Downs, so there is lots of scope for bonding over a great walk to the watertower cafe, or round the botanical garden.
