“Now, you just have to give this place a try”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

Whenever we visit Bristol we have stayed in the Hotel du Vin for the past 10 years or so. but that place isn't what it used to be and so we jumped ship this time and stayed at 38 Clifton - and what a nice place it is - easy to find, fairly easy to park and plenty of good restaurants nearby - oh, and very helpful and friendly staff.

Now owned by the Dorian-Smith dynasty of Tresco fame and somewhat reminiscent of one of those small hotels that you find in St Germain - very smart, somewhat chic and an excellent breakfast.

This place is very good - we will visit again.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel have stunning views over the city towards the Mendips and face south...

“Great stay”

We stayed at Number Thirty Eight for one night on 17th Demeber 2011 when we collected our son from Uni. We had a great time, welcoming and efficient staff, we were shown to our room and heating controls etc explained, room was lovely, very large comfortable bed, wood panelled room painted in Farrow and Ball, large bathroom with separate bath and shower, views over the city. The hotel is on a hill, the rooms at the back look over the city and the front ones overlook the park. Well stocked mini bar, free wi fi in room, freshly cooked breakfast. The hotel appeared to be full when we stayed, the staff were friendly and helpful in recommending places to eat on Whiteladies Rd nearby. When we arrived late afternoon on Saturday we parked easily outside but after going out in the evening it was more difficult to find a space but managed to park 5 minutes walk from the hotel. Check out was quick and efficient. We would definitely recommend this place and would stay here again.

“Unassuming outside - Fab inside”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2011

Recommended by a friend of a friend as an alternative to the usual city hotels, this establishment is brilliant. OK, there is no on-site parking, so you have to park on a busy road outside.

Through the front door and enter a very smart, tranquil setting. Following a very informal meeting with the house manager, it's off to your room. He explains all the details and where everything is - nothing is too much trouble....and you are provided with the front door key so that you can come and go as you please.

The room was superb - quite and snuggly warm - with every facility you need and high quality furnishings. The large bathroom had a roll-top bath and separate shower.
The house manager explained the local amenties close to the hotel and the partner restaurants, all first class.

Breakfast was of a high quality with the attentive staff making sure everything was OK.
Check-out was a quick and simple process.

All in all, brilliant!!

Room Tip: Call the hotel and explain your needs - they will be looked after I'm sure.
