“Perfect Place to Relax”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 March 2011

Black Sands Lodge in Piha, New Zealand is a delightful oasis. It is located within walking distance to the beach and the town of Piha with restaurants and cafes. Our cottage was nestled amongst native foilage and bush that is expertly taken care of by the owners of the Lodge. A large deck with table and chairs affords you a great view while sipping a glass of wine. The cottage has one bedroom, lounge area, full kitchen, dining area and full bathroom. It is perfect if you want to cook or just enjoy the large space. The owners are just as delightful as they share their stories of the beach, the gardens, and the surrounding area. Definitely the best place to stay in Piha.

One of the most picturesque and relaxing places on the planet. Bobbie and Julia organised a bus to pick me up from the airport and also got a free upgrade for a night aswell which was a great send off. Really was an ideal few days spent eating writing listening to music and surfing in a spot about 100m from the beach and waves. Couldn't have hoped for a lovelier setting or hosts who only seemed to be there when you needed them. Perfect.

“Great way to unwind after a long flight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2011

I stayed in the cabin at Black Sands Lodge my first two nights in New Zealand, it was the perfect place to recover after the long flight. The beach was not crowded and there were plenty of places within walking distance. It was so quiet at night, I slept very well and didn't suffer jet lag at all. Bobbie and Julia were excellent hosts and made us feel right at home.

“Escape from the Big Smoke”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2010

Bobbie and Julia hosted us like we were daughters coming home. We hadn't been there for more than 10 minutes when we were invited to Christmas dinner -- which was tasty, traditional and also fun. Like Christmas at "home" but without the argument afterwards or creepy uncle leering at your sundress.

We stayed in "the cabin" which shares a bathroom with them, it was completely not an issue. This isn't a hotel, its a bed and breakfast run by a family. You're a 3 minute walk to the beach and waves.

Its not a question of whether we'll be back at Piha, just when!

“I must be living in a different universe.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2010

Someone is obviously computer savvy.Every time you look for Piha accomodations this lodge comes up on the top of the list.Nice pics etc.At a $180 NZD per night, two nights minimum stay at the Tui Cottage. We were looking forward to a weekend away.
What a terrible mistake.
Place is micro tiny.. You bump into the walls and doors.Bed was sold to us as a queen..it is double.Tiny again. And we are slim and fit people.Cold.Dark.
No keys given to us so we had to log our computers with us at all times.Could not lock the place.
No lights at night, lucky for us we had our phones with us and used them to illuminate the road.
Left after one night.
Couple of gals from Whangarei stayed at the same time and had to share bathroom with the owner. They paid $130 per night.

Unfortunately we had a wedding when Orangecat came to stay and had someone managing the property for us. I am a little surprised at her comment however. We have been operating for 6 years and have had hundreds of very happy customers. I remember this booking well. She was sent our web site to view the suite and didnt book until 4 days later so had plenty of time to consider whether she wanted to stay with us. On the 4th day she wrote and said she would like to stay, but could we confirm that we didnt have bedbugs! She noted we had Americans staying (dont know how she knew that) and that they might have brought them. There is a key to lock the place and I understand she was given it. Your computers would have been completely safe even if you had left your suite open as we are very private and see anyone coming onto the property. Piha is a small coastal village so there are not a lot of street lights which make it appealing to most people. Glad she had her phone to light the road. The bed is a queen. The women from Whangare who booked the cabin have stayed here before and requested the cabin. Yes, it has a shared bathroom and that is why it is $130 per night. We do not oversell our property. Yes, we are very computer savy and our web site is very honest. The Tui Suite is smaller than the Kauri, but we have never had guests bumping into walls etc. The pictures clearly display its size and it is not sold as being a full house. Best Orangecat continues to stay in resort towns like Port Douglas and the Meridian which she obviously prefers.
