“Beautiful Location, Exquisite Accomodation, Gourmet Food and Friendly Hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 March 2011

I spent a couple of nights at the Beacon B&B. This is one of the nicest places that I have stayed. The hosts were very accomodating by providing me with local tourism information, ferry schedules in addition to Powell River's illustrious history. What a beautiful town, and if your are a runner it is great place to run with lots of trails and quiet, scenic roads. The room was very clean, private and extremely comfortable with super comfy mattresses. The Beacon B&B has unobstructed ocean view (absolutely outstanding) and is located 3 minutes from down town by car. There is also a seawalk across the road so walking is also a great option. The Beacon B&B has a very comfortable area (living room with view) to hang out and relax. The breakfasts were very delicious and nutritious. It is apparent that the hosts take great pride in providing a high quality meal. Above all, I enjoyed my stay at the Beacon B&B and appreciate the great hospitality!

“Nice place but no privacy at all - over bearing hosts”

I travel a lot as a solo woman on business and for sfety concerns I have steered towards B&Bs and always had wonderfull experiences, until this one. Hosts never gave me any peace and quiet unless I locked myself away in my room. There was no private space to sit and read or work as they hovered around as soon as I ventured out of my bedroom. I don't expect total privacy at all, and enjoy meeting people which is why I like B&Bs but this was too much. Nice people but the man would even sit across the breakfast table from me and watch me eat! Creepy and too much for me. Sorry but wouldn't recommend this place because of the over bearing hosts. Price was not great either, should have some sort of price break for more than night, especially for several nights in the down season!

Thank you for taking the time to review your experience. We have heard many times from the guests that the reason they do B&B is for the interaction between the hosts and themselves. We would have appreciated if you could have been so kind as to bring any concerns you were experiecing to our attention in the moment so that we could have made appropriate adjustments for you personally, we are so sorry that we didn't detect any issues until this review. We try to be as hospitable as possible which in our opinion means not leaving guests at the breakfast table alone unless being told otherwise. Our off season is from November - April. We offer 10% off for weekly stays. We are glad that you have chosen B&B's for your mode of accommodation, every one will be as unique as the hosts themselves. Opening one's home to the world is a labour of love, we truly enjoy sharing what we have with the travelling public.

“Great hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2011

The Beacon was recommended when we booked our concert tickets with the Academy of Music. We found Shirley and Roger to be warm, thoughtful, experienced hosts with an encyclopedic knowledge of their city. The bed was comfy, the ensuite was spotless, and the view from the breakfast table included seals, seabirds and the peaks of Vancouver Island across the water. From the fruit sundae for starters to the gourmet eggs benedict with asparagus, breakfast was delicious start to finish. They even made fresh muffins for the road!

“The most welcoming and best value for money place I've stayed in.”

We stayed for one night at the Beacon B&B on our road trip honeymoon and I can honestly say this is one place I wish we could have stayed longer. Roger and Shirley where wonderful hosts and our room had been specially decorated with some slightly corny 'Bride and Groom' stickers ready for our arrival.

We arrived at around 845 on a Sunday night (as we had got the last ferry from Comox) and they welcomed us at the door. I was worried about finding the place but it had a well lit sign at the end of the drive as well as a string of lights across the front of the house. They showed us to our room at which point another couple turned up asking if they had room (which they did). Within 20 minutes we found ourselves sat around the dining room table exchanging stories and opinions on all sorts of different subjects with the hosts and the other couple. I mention this because we are not the most social of couples and we tend to keep ourselves to ourselves, but they were very welcoming and we couldn't say no. Within 30 minutes of sitting down, and three refusals, I was served a warmed croissant with cheese for dinner as Shirley just wouldn't let me go without (it was too late to go out and get dinner so I was just going to skip it). We ended up chatting until around midnight and I can honestly say that Roger is one of the nicest and most entertaining characters I have ever met. One thing's for sure, he won't ever turn down an opportunity for a joke (like sneaking out a huge teddy bear for us when we told them we'd seen no Bears in Banff / Jasper).

The next morning, breakfast was unbelievably well presented and absolutely delicious, (photos attached) and they even included special 'Bride and Groom' goblets to drink our orange juice out of. As we left they gave us a large muffin each to keep us going through the morning as our ferry was going to be delayed (they looked up and gave us an update on the ferry service over breakfast).

As for the key factors of a B&B, the room and bathroom was very clean and well equipped, I had a great nights sleep, the B&B is very well located just a couple of minutes from the ferry terminal, the view from the front room is truly amazing, the hosts are very nice and welcoming, and the value is unbeatable.

If you need a place to stay in Powell River, stay here. It was so good I paid $15 more than the nightly rate, which is a bit unlike me ;)

To anyone thinking of staying at Beacon B&B it is a must. Shirley is an outstanding cook and hostess - Rodger is a real card and fantastic host.
The moment we arrived we felt like we had known them for years. Very clean rooms, excellent view from the balcony, very relaxing and enjoyable stay.
We will be back but , this time we will stay longer :)
Thanks so much Shirley and Rodger.
