I stayed at this hotel for two nights during a week in Quebec and Montreal. Some other reviews say the location is poor, but seriously? if you want to be closer to Old Quebec then stay at the Chateau, otherwise this hotel is a 10 minute brisk walk from Old Quebec, prime location for the price.
I arrived early for check in, which was fine (no fee), the staff were very friendly and spoke english to me - and respected my poor attempts to speak french which was nice. The hotel has a real quirky modern type feel to it. The halls are really dark and depressing though, i posted a photo of the door to my room on facebook and one of my friends commented "ewww scary! I wouldn't go in there!". It actually reminded me of the Generator Hostel halls in London (which are like prison halls).
My room was nice, but again modern quirky furniture. Bed was huge, nice big window with a crappy view of the street in front of the hotel. The other side of the hotel has a nice view of the chapel. The bathroom is really black and the toilet seat was really uncomfortable! I know that sounds like a strange thing to whine about, but its annoying when you want to relax on the toilet while reading a magazine and the edges of the seat are digging into your butt cheeks!
Anyway, WiFi was free but the reception was so poor it barely worked (8th floor east side). TV seemed alright at first, you can swivel the TV to aim at the bed BUT the volume was at 100% and i could barely hear some channels plus it sounded fuzzy.
There is no sound proofing at all in the room, and you can hear the elevator all night long. *BING* it would go when it arrived at the floor... *BING*... every time! drove me a little insane...
The gym was average and the pool was a decent Olympic style lap pool? never seen this in a hotel before, not really something to relax in, more for a competitive or aerobic swimmer to get a workout in. I prefer a relaxing spa type pool + sauna on my holidays.
Other than that the staff in the hotel were of a high standard! they were so helpful when explaining the maps and sights. I came in one afternoon with a painting (I wanted to give to a friend) and asked them to write something in french for me. Even with my strange request they gladly did this for me. Only negative regarding service was I wasn't really informed about the extras available to me. I was told there was a coffee machine and free WiFi. That's really it! I had to enquire about everything else. Apparently there is a restaurant there... didn't find out until after I left...
I'm undecided with this hotel, I think if you have a good deal / package (like some kind of promotion) to stay here then definitely take it, but nothing really memorable about the place other then the nice staff and Olympic swimming pool.
Super friendly staff
Pool for aerobic swimming
Value for money
Modern design was too much
Poor sound proofing
Uncomfortable toilet (lol)
Try to get a room on the West Side, on a +5 Level so you get a good view of the Chapel!
