“Took my breath away.. because it stunk.”
If I had to sum up my review with one word, it would be "Wow". Unfortunately, if I only used one word, you might read the review and think I was praising the Super 8 Motel in Thunder Bay. Sadly, this couldn't be further from the truth.
We booked this motel through Hotwire after being promised a 2 star property. I can say with great confidence that this place is a one-star hovel at best. The 'free parking' and 'free muffins' in the AM do not justify a 2 star rating.
We arrived in Thunder Bay at 11PM and made our way to the motel. As other reviews have noted, it's in a rougher area of town. Upon entering the lobby, the first thing that struck me was the sickeningly-sweet smell of an air freshener/cleaner. We had a considerable amount of luggage with us for our trip that I wasn't about to just leave in the car, so I asked where the elevator was. I might as well have asked where in the building the petting zoo was (although, that might have explained the smell). The clerk just laughed.
As the parking lot was full, we were forced to park next door at "Robin's Donuts". We got out of the car and had to walk through a cloud of smoke (with our 4 month old baby), courtesy of a bunch of kids smoking pot outside the closed donut shop. After a few trips, I lugged all our bags back to the room and hoped the rental car would still be there in the morning.
The hallways shared the overpowering stench of cheap air freshener and could be best described as 'tired'. I felt like we were in a run down apartment complex. As you made your way past occupied rooms, you could clearly hear conversations: there's no illusion of privacy at this hovel.
Our room was absolutely no-frills. Tired art hung on the walls and a large crack stretched across the wall. A small, noisy, window air conditioner blew directly on the soft and uncomfortable bed. The room just felt run-down, tired and old.
After travelling all day and getting in late, we were looking forward to sleeping in. Unfortunately, the curtains are mounted so far out from the recessed windows that the room is flooded with light as soon as the sun rises. We ended up getting up early and heading to the lobby to pick up food from their free continental breakfast. The 'continental breakfast' consisted of juices and fresh muffins from the donut shop next door and were probably the only highlight of the whole stay.
We were eager to leave this motel as soon as we could in the morning. As an added bonus, our car was left unscathed in the empty donut-shop parking lot.
I would NOT recommend this property unless it undergoes a SIGNIFICANT amount of improvement. I will also be very hesitant to book a hotel through a third-party 'deal' site ever again based on this terrible experience.
