“Freezing cold rooms in the middle of winter.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2011

For 75 bucks I got to stay in a room that was at about 45 degrees F. Changed rooms and it was the same. I checked in at around 11pm, so I wasn't getting a real run for my money anyway, but the malfunctioning heaters made the whole thing a complete joke. No offers of reimbursement from the management either which I thought was very poor.

“Gave us the 'Creeps'. Hovel describes it well!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2010

This Super 8 is below expectations and acceptable standards.

The rooms are dark and dingy; the decor probably fresh when Noah traveled on the Ark. Sheets and towels are threadbare - we have better in our rag bin at home. The carpets were dirty and stained, as were the chairs and the bedspreads. You could see the bedspread through the sheets so that at first we thought there were large dirty spots on the sheets. Nope, just really REALLY worn spots. The paint on the walls was chipped, cracked and stained. Not a comfortable room to relax in after along drive.

The room had access from the hall in the hotel as well as the back parking lot where a bunch of unsavory-looking individuals hung out smoking and doing God-knows-what else. Very uncomfortable feeling having that right outside your back door.

The coffee maker was situated on the bathroom counter - which might not be so bad except that the bathroom was gross! Under the vanity counter was a large hole in the wall. We wondered what would crawl out of there during the night.

Although the hotel is in a sleazy area of town, the lobby appeared quite nice and the staff friendly. Our first impression therefore, was that this was the usual Super 8 quality and standard despite the location. It absolutely was not.

We have stayed in a good number of Super 8 hotels in both the US and Canada and I can truly say this fell way below expectations. Super 8 should be ashamed of the sign hanging in front of this place.

“Disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2010

If you like a dim lit room that is crying out for updating. This is the place to stay. We did not have a single towel in the bathroom that didn't have threads dangling from the seams and were worn out well beyond their useful life cycle. We frequently stay in Days Inn's or Super 8's and this establishment did not meet our expectations we associate with the Super 8 chain. The desk staff was very nice and courteous.

“Took my breath away.. because it stunk.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2010

If I had to sum up my review with one word, it would be "Wow". Unfortunately, if I only used one word, you might read the review and think I was praising the Super 8 Motel in Thunder Bay. Sadly, this couldn't be further from the truth.

We booked this motel through Hotwire after being promised a 2 star property. I can say with great confidence that this place is a one-star hovel at best. The 'free parking' and 'free muffins' in the AM do not justify a 2 star rating.

We arrived in Thunder Bay at 11PM and made our way to the motel. As other reviews have noted, it's in a rougher area of town. Upon entering the lobby, the first thing that struck me was the sickeningly-sweet smell of an air freshener/cleaner. We had a considerable amount of luggage with us for our trip that I wasn't about to just leave in the car, so I asked where the elevator was. I might as well have asked where in the building the petting zoo was (although, that might have explained the smell). The clerk just laughed.

As the parking lot was full, we were forced to park next door at "Robin's Donuts". We got out of the car and had to walk through a cloud of smoke (with our 4 month old baby), courtesy of a bunch of kids smoking pot outside the closed donut shop. After a few trips, I lugged all our bags back to the room and hoped the rental car would still be there in the morning.

The hallways shared the overpowering stench of cheap air freshener and could be best described as 'tired'. I felt like we were in a run down apartment complex. As you made your way past occupied rooms, you could clearly hear conversations: there's no illusion of privacy at this hovel.

Our room was absolutely no-frills. Tired art hung on the walls and a large crack stretched across the wall. A small, noisy, window air conditioner blew directly on the soft and uncomfortable bed. The room just felt run-down, tired and old.

After travelling all day and getting in late, we were looking forward to sleeping in. Unfortunately, the curtains are mounted so far out from the recessed windows that the room is flooded with light as soon as the sun rises. We ended up getting up early and heading to the lobby to pick up food from their free continental breakfast. The 'continental breakfast' consisted of juices and fresh muffins from the donut shop next door and were probably the only highlight of the whole stay.

We were eager to leave this motel as soon as we could in the morning. As an added bonus, our car was left unscathed in the empty donut-shop parking lot.

I would NOT recommend this property unless it undergoes a SIGNIFICANT amount of improvement. I will also be very hesitant to book a hotel through a third-party 'deal' site ever again based on this terrible experience.

“Sleazy---recommend you stay at Best Western Nor'Wester Hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2010

I always try to stay at a Super 8 hotel because it provides good value for the money; however, this Thunder Bay facility (on Memorial Ave) doesn't meet even the basic standards for cleanliness and comfort.

More specifically, my room had:
-the only window covered with an old piece of wood to accommodate a decrepit air conditioner,
-a foot plate on the front door to cover the rotting wood,
-insufficient furnishings and lighting (e.g. only one bedside table, no pictures on the walls, poor lighting).
-dirty walls which were painted a glossly dark orange colour,
-a dark carpet,
-a bathroom with a chunk of porcelain missing from the sink, and
-a bed that was too soft to get any sleep.

None of these things taken in isolation is offensive but when taken together it made for a dark/creepy experience. When in Thunder Bay, I now stay at the Nor'Western hotel which is well worth the extra money.
