“A mixed Bag but not the best”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 November 2011

I couldn't find a room anywhere else so I wound here in the heart of an older downtown neighborhood. The price was quite high I thought and all they had available was a suite. I found the room to be pretty nice. It had been redone and was clean. The common areas of the hotel were not nice and were so dim It lent a creepy vibe to the place. There were dozen of people loitering around the lobby and street in front smoking and looking bored. I didn't eat or partake in any of the hotels amenities. I also never really saw anything that looked much like the photos here in TA. One big aggravation was the elevator that took forever and malfunctioned. Also there was no one to help with the luggage (typical of Canada). Would have been acceptable for about 1/2 the price paid.

Room Tip: The lakeside rooms are probably quieter. I would pick a room close to the fire escape

“Enjoyed our stay.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

Our room was great. The bedding was lovely, soft and thick. The view was amazing. The service was good; friendly, attentive and helpful. Loved the lobby. Glad such a historic hotel is still going strong.
If fancy bathrooms are important to you, ask for one. Not an issue for me. Ours was basic, but perfectly clean and well maintained.
No continental breakfast, but the room rate makes up for this. Very reasonable.

“Not great”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

Old hotel, old tired rooms, loud with banging doors in the hallway heard all night and shouting from the street below. Just because the hotel is old itself doesn't mean it can't be upgraded with things like a counter in the bathroom (only had a pedestal sink) or a newer couch etc. Really awful lighting in the room only lamps with no central lights at all so at night there is barely enough light to read a book. I wouldn't stay there again.

“Very Nice, but not the best”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2011

I booked the 'Romance Package' which had me in a large room with a jacuzzi. Jacuzzi was big enough for two and was clean, until I turned on the jets and a hair ball flew out of one of them. The room was big and the king bed was comfortable. The couch was old and had a slip cover on it, but it was clean. The door didn't close unless you slammed it. The Romance Package was great and worth while (bottle of champagne, fruit, cheese, crackers, cookies, jucie). The walls are thin and we could hear Everything happening in the hallway. It has a beautiful location, however I do think that the Hotel needs some updating.

Room Tip: Lakeview rooms have beautiful view of Lake Superior and the Sleeping Giant. We had room 519.

“an old classic with character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

We have stayed here several times through the years mainly because the price stays low compred to other accommodation in Thunder bay. The best part is the view of lake Superior and the Sleeping Giant. It nice to walk down to the harbor and visit the shops. The rooms are a bit old fashioned but it is what gives it a bit of charm. We encountered a problem of booking where we were charged for a night we had not booked. We thought we had solved the issue with the front desk upon arrival but then we had to contact the manager a few days later. He corrected the problem to our visa. The rooms are extremely clean. Ask for a waterfront view. The only thing that has changed is the type and number of people hanging around the area.It could be due to the closeness of the casino and the sign of a changing economy. It was very safe walking around the area.We will stay again.
