“Poor accomodations; excellent staff”

I stayed here on a week-end when the "hotel" was quite booked with guests. It is really quite a run-down motel style place with rooms that were very clean but very dated and almost seedy. The staff, however, was fabulous - efficient, friendly, helpful.

“Yikes!”

Driving up to the front of the hotel, I noticed that one of the concrete columns was crumbling and you could see the rebar inside. This really set the tone for our stay!

The front desk area seemed decent enough, although with one person working and four people checking in, it was a bit chaotic. Despite having booked a room with a queen bed, we were told they only had rooms with two twin beds. Luckily, someone else checking-in had gotten a queen bed and wasn't too thrilled about sharing it with his male friend, so we were able to swap!

The walk to the room made my heart sink. The corridors *smelled*. My only guess is they've had some issues with damp as it smelled musty and could have done with a general overhaul.

The room itself was better. It did seem relatively clean, but the poorly mounted window air conditioner made a racket -- and we needed it on as it was too hot otherwise.

If you really just want a bed, then maybe this is an okay place to spend a night. However, we've been spending a lot of weekend's in Hamilton and have found vastly better places to stay for similar prices.

“5-star staff @ a 1/2-star motel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2011
2
people found this review helpful

My son and I stayed here Oct 3 2011 as he is an out-patient going for daily treatments at St Joe's Hospital. The hotel wasn't, er, quite up to my expectations but the friendly & helpful front desk staff quickly cancelled my remaining reservations with no argument whatsoever. We couldn't get out of the Oct 3rd reservation as we checked in around 5ish. I freaked out when we got to our room (112 I think) as the door was open. Not just unlocked, wide open! The chain lock had been ripped right off the door. Furnishings were tired, room was dim (merely two lamps, no overhead light etc) and the television, purchashed when the earth was still cooling, featured snowy reception on all channels. Some plusses: the linen was crisp and clean and the bathroom spotless & bright. Breakfast was modest but tasty and consistently re-stocked by friendly staff. Coffee was better than at most restaurants. Parking was only at the back of the hotel in a dim & seedy-looking area. On-site restaurant was a Hooters <ahem> so my son and I walked across the street to a Moose Winooski's. I hope the HoJo corporation takes good care of their dedicated employees and promotes them away from this property.

Room Tip: As cruel as it sounds, choose a room across the street at The Marriott.

“paint is required”

we were there for one night in oct 2011. what an ugly hotel. located in a kind of a strip mall, it does not even look like a hotel. it took over 20 minutes to check in. the counter clerk did not seem to know what he was doing. they took a deposit of $ 100. on our credit card, i have never seen this before. usually an imprint is taken as a security, but no money is chaarged to your card. very weird. the hotel is old and need total refurbishing. our room needed a good coat of paint, new drapes, air conditioner and the fire detention unit was hanging from the ceiling. recommendation, avoid this hotel.

“our 6 night stay was so comfortable we will definitely be revisiting from England”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2011

I chose to make this booking despite the bad reviews I'd read because the hotel is within walking distance of my son's home. We had come to see my new grandchild and were willing to put up with the problems described in the reviews to be close to the family.
I came from England with my sister-in-law, we're both pensioners and had booked a twin room. The beds were both queen-size and extremely comfortable, the bathroom was clean and well-equiped with everything from the usual soaps and towels to a pack of needles and threads! The shower was really good.
Three members of my family and the baby visited us and we were able to sit them in our room comfortably.
Being five hours ahead of Canada-time, I got up at 6 on the first morning and so was down early to breakfast. I expected the complimentary 'continental' breakfast to be simple but I was pleasantly surprised .. there was a selection of cereals; fresh juice, tea and coffee; muffins; different breads to toast and a waffle machine complete with a choice of spreads. As I was up so early I sat for over 3 hours in the breakfast area reading and was aware that the staff regularly and quietly replenished everything as well as wiping down the tables and removing the dirty dishes. I was encouraged by the staff to have as many coffee top-ups as I wanted. It was a lovely start to my stay.
The Italian restaurant attached to the hotel was well used by our family group as it was good as well as convenient. The hotel is very well placed and within walking distance of several eateries and a Tim Horton's.
We had no car but the bus stop for downtown Hamilton is just outside the hotel with a regular service (buy a strip of bus-tickets in the mall to save money), We enjoyed a day trip to Niagara Falls using public transport as buses from the GO terminal in Hamilton go there and to many other cities. We stayed for 6 nights from the 14th September to the 20th and, apart from some young men taking their visit to the Comedy Club back to their room and being noisy on the Friday night, we slept well as the air conditioner kept the room at a comfortable temperature. The Comedy Club is only on once a week and when I spoke to the reception next morning she said I shuild have immediately phoned the desk as they would have removed them if they had not quietened down. She took note of the room, but I didn't follow it up.
The hotel is not new but it is cared for and has a nice atmosphere. When I told my sister-in-law of the reviews I'd read, she was very surprised and to be honest we wondered if someone was trying to give the hotel a bad reputation. We will most certainly stay there again and I will recommend it to any of our family or friends visiting Hamilton.
Thank you to the staff for a comfortable stay.
