I have stayed at the Carmi for 3 years in a row. The motel is very unassuming located next to the Dairy Queen on Main Street. The rooms are a throwback to the late 60's/70's, and many of the rooms are strange sizes and on the dark side. The motel looks like an Alpen style with white outer walls accented with dark brown beams. If you are looking for a Holiday Inn style hotel with the same generic look, there is a Best Western down the road and it will cost you. The Carmi's rooms depending on the season are generally $79 -$89 for a simple queen bed. If you were to try to get a room at one of the motels on the strip by the Okanagan Lake beach in Penticton, you would pay @ $129.00 per night. (Campsites in Kelowna can run you $75 a night to tent)
The rooms are clean, but as I said they are dark, so it is not for a family where cleanliness is the biggest factor in choosing a room. The beds are fine, not too hard, not too soft, but don't expect top of the line mattresses at these prices - you won't wake up with your back out of joint.
They do have a pool which is kept quite cool for cooling off during the hot summer days.
The shower's water pressure is ample, although the towels are a washed out chocolate brown (to keep with the decor). Yes there are chips in the porcelain sink and the furniture is literally from the 60's and 70's, but as I've said this place is all about saving you money so you can spend it eating out, or touring the wineries. Kitchenettes are also available (make sure you wash all the dishes and glassware otherwise they charge $30), and each room has an air conditioner (yes the old kind that hang out the windows.)
So, overall the hotel would rate an average to poor for it's look and dated decor, but the money you save for sleeping there for 6 to 8 hours a night will have you smiling the next morning. Many others have given this place negative reviews... and they probably expected much more but clearly they wanted the cheap price... you get what you pay for! (Next time, ask to see the room before you pay for it.) If you want a nice clean, pristine bright room... you're gonna pay over $120 a night for it... the B&B's are way over that price!
