In the quiet oceanside town of Chemainus BC, you would hardly expect to be transported back to Medieval Ages, live in a castle, dine like royalty and be treated like a king and queen but that is exactly what to expect if you're lucky enough to find vacancy at Castlebury Cottage. This "castle" is actually an old house renovated and decorated to look and feel like a small European castle. Everything from the ivy covered brick/stone exterior, to the wrought iron balconies, window treatments, leaded glass panes, suit of armour tucked into a corner, ancient books of love letters and poems scattered here and there, royal purple velvet covered couches and beds, a jacuzzi tub for 2, and the list goes on. We arrived to find our names and a welcome note posted on the cathedral shaped door of the cottage and soft celtic music playing throughout. Softly lit with vintage lamps and medieval style candles proved that the hosts, Virginia and Larry have thought of everything and obviously delight in their business. Not only are they perfect hosts, but excellent chefs as well. We were in awe of the breakfasts which were delivered to our door in a wicker basket, covered in battenburg lace and exquisitely presented. Dishes such as: starfruit salad with goat cheese & mint, heart shaped waffles with fresh berry sauce, scones with peach compote and creme fraiche, scrambled eggs baked in a whole wheat tortilla and topped with smoked salmon and gruyere cheese sauce. Each of these creations was usually topped with edible flowers and fresh herbs. You seldom receive this quality at the finest dining establishments. If you want to be blown away, stay here but be prepared to never want to leave.
