We have been to banff for the past 8 years, and for the past 7 years always stayed in the same hotel The Caribou Lodge, unfortunatley for us, this hotel was not available to us through our tour operator. We were offered the Mount Royal, we knew of this hotel and thought from the outside it looked OK so we booked it!! bitterly disappointed with the whole of our stay in this hotel!! the only good thing was that it is in the centre of town, but other than that there is nothing really good that I can say about this hotel. When we arrived and checked in which was rather late in the evening (christmas eve), we where given the key, we went upto our room, it was the smallest possible room, with one double bed, the smallest closet (the hanging rail went from front to back of closet rather than side to side) this gave us about a foot of hanging space! we had a chest of draws with just 3 draws! we where staying for two weeks skiing holiday, and therefore not enough storage space at all!! We where next door to the laundry room and throughout the stay people used it very late at night, the walls are very thin so we heard the water filling the washing machines and the noise of the machines, even though there was a sign that said the laundry was open from 10am until 10pm, no-one took any notice of this, one evening we came back, after an evening out and there was two people sat on the floor outside our room and laundry, chatting away late into the night, the walls being so thin we could hear all there conversation, due to the walls being so thin, we could hear all doors opening and closing, after a days skiing on christmas day, we got back to the hotel, we had to ask the reception staff if there was a hot tub and where it was, and also where was breakfast being served, as NO information was given to us on our arrival!! ~As we had been to Banff for the past 8 years, we knew where everything was in town, but we wanted to try Nakiska for a days skiing, we asked a reception, and they could not give us any information, we then asked the concierge and he could not help, we then picked up a leaflet, and tried ringing several times and was always put on hold, so we asked at reception if they could find out for us, they said that they would and would leave a message on our room phone for when we got back, but nothing!! We ate in the paddock pub which is part of the hotel, and this was a disaster from the start, we waited 90mins for a burger and a steak sandwich, but when it finally arrived it was so overcooked it was disgusting!! When we checked out of the hotel, we recieved our checking out statement for a breakfast and a phone call, and we where charged over $50, when I queried this, I was informed that this hotel charged for local calls (The Caribou dont charge for local calls), so the couple of calls to Nakiska where charged! and the cost of the call to the UK was obscene!! again compared to the 20c per minute charged by the Caribou Lodge!! Basically we where not impressed with the Mount Royal and would most definitley not stay here again!! If I cant stay at the Caribou Lodge I probably would not go back!!! ~The bed was the most uncomfortable thing I have ever slept in, so soft that if we moved it felt like a water bed!! and the pillows where terrible! the thermostat in the room kept changing itself all the time, we set it to 68 and when you wake up its set itself to 72, we had a window in the room, but it was a solid piece of glass - you could not open it - therefore no fresh air !!
Room Tip: do not go for room 363, it's the in the old part of the hotel, looked directly out to a wall and...
