On the last leg of our trip through Colonial Mexico, my husband and I made an overnight stop in Leon before flying back home. We figured it was the "convenient" thing to do since we had already spent several days in Guanajuato and wanted to see the leather shops in Leon. Based on the only review posted for this hotel ( many of the reviews I have read of other cities and hotels have been very helpful and accurate in the past), I decided on this hotel. BIG BIG BIG mistake.
First of all, Leon is an industrial city which has NONE of the charm of the other cities in the region. Tthe center of the town, unlike the others I visited ,is UGLY and dirty. The bus stop and leather/shoe district is quite a distance from the center. The cab ride from there to this area was the most expensive in the region.
Second of all, I knew that the hotel was a budget hotel, but did not expect to sacrifice cleanliness at this rate. At about 4 in the morning, we were rudely awakened by the overpowering stench of sewage coming out of the air vent. We decided to leave to the airport 5 hours before our flight left because of the smell. We complained to the night "manager" whom we woke up as he slept on the couch in the lobby. He claimed the smell came from the streets but it did not smell outside.
HORRIBLE!! Stay Away!!!! If you want to shop in Leon, do it early so you can head back to Guanajuato at night.
