we had booked for a couple of days stay at the Chandoorisai resort, 60 kms from Koraput, the mining town in Orissa. by road it is about 5 hrs drive through the picturesque Araku Valley in Andhra Pradesh. a friend had introduced us to this resort.
the resort takes its name from a mango tree called the Chandoorisai. it is designed, constructed and run by an Australian gentleman Mr Leon Mahoney. He had come to India as a supervisor for the Highway construction company and fell in love with the area and took an acre of land on lease. he the went on the construct the resort with the local materials & technology. he discovered the potters' village around that area and had utilized their skill to produce the roofing, flooring tiles & other pots etc.
he is maintaining a garden and it is beautiful in the morning,, evening & night!!! in the mornings you see the mist hanging on the the trees around and see the misty rolling hill ranges around, you can go for a trek there. in the evening, you can enjoy the gardens. and at night!!!! oh my god!!! there is no light pollution hence u get to see the night sky!!! layers and layers of stars... u see the milky way clearly . then around u , u see thousand of fireflies!!!
the construction itself is our indigenous technology, with clay walls & tiled roofs, false ceiling with locally made colorful sarees. No A/C are there, and we did not need them even at peak summer in April!!! the walls were cool and the high roofs kept the heat out. the toilets are very clean & absolutely modern with hot water & western WC.
the best part was that Leon cooked the food all by himself, with the help of the tribal ladies. He even baked his own bread as it is not available in the Village. he even made apple pie for us!! the kitchen is an open one, and if u want u can even try your hand there!! I learnt to make Italian bread ciabatta from Leon!! one day we went with the locals to fish in a tiny rivulet at the end of the property and i cooked the fish & crabs we caught!!!
the ladies took us to the potters village and we all tried our hand in throwing clay on the wheel and tried to make some lamps too!!
I must tell you about the tribal ladies!! they were the highlight of Chandoorisai. they were so neat & clean, well behaved and forever smiling!! they have learnt to speak in English with an Australian accent no less!!! it was very cute to hear them asking if we needed some bride!!! ( bride = bread) or khauld water = cold water!!!
it was an experience i would like to repeat in the very near future - but after the rains when the hills would be verdant green on the orange soil!!
the charges are Rs 3000.00 per cpl per night and it was worth every bit of it. It relaxed us and we came back totally refreshed!!!
