“Good fun people”

My two daughters and I didn't stay there because we were staying at a realitives place down the street on the beach but we meet them the first day we were there. They were fun and helped us with anything we needed to know, or any place we wanted to go and didn't know how to get there. When we needed a dr. they helped us get one and we rented a golf cart from them the whole time we were there...which was a blast. Its a neat place right on the beach.
I mean what do you expect your in Mexico not Las Vegas. Its all good. Have fun, relax, you'll enjoy yourself.

“Great place to stay cheaply and do nothing”

Great place to stay cheaply and do nothing

Very laid-back, a great place to relax and essentially do nothing. Felipe (owner) was gracious and helpful, and offered to get us 1/2 price bus tickets back to Guadalajara (unfortunately, we had already bought them). His wife Linda is a good cook, and we ate 4 breakfasts on site. We only ate one dinner there, and it was OK and extremely inexpensive (less than $5 US per person w/o drinks). "Happy hour" is from 1 to 5 PM with beer at $1 US. We had a 2nd floor room facing the ocean, and waves lulled us to sleep. Clientele seemed mainly retired Canadians and Europeans, who did not stay up to all hours (as mentioned in other reviews.) One night there were some in the bar below us, trying to remember 60's songs with a guitar, but they kept losing track after the first line or two. They had no staying power, and went to bed about 11. Rooms were reasonably clean, but maid service was spotty. Climate in early March was perfect, with breeze to keep the bugs away and low humidity and nice temps. I agree with the observation about the toucans - Felipe needs to scrub down the poop which is right at the entry. TV was not working - Felipe said something about the cable service being on the fritz. We did not care - brought books to read and did not need to keep up with the world. Most reviews on this site are old - our experience was generally much nicer than the reviews that are negative, and we are not youngsters who will put up with a lot of crap. Resaurants in the rest of Melaque are pretty basic, but the Maya had great Asian-fusion cooking and wonderful seafood. In short - stay at San felipe if you want quiet and a great view of the beach and waves to put you to sleep.

“This place is awful”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2006

This place is very dirty. I have been to Mexico four times and love travelling throughout Mexico and I have stayed in a variety of places and settings. This is by far the filthiest hotel I have been to in Mexico. The owners have two tucans and their habitation creates bird excrement along the entrance way to the hotel. The rooms are dirty. They are equipped with a small kitchenette. In one of the rooms the hot plate had caked on grease and crumbs everywhere. The public washroom was unclean. This place is grossly overpriced for what is essentially a dump.

“San Filipe is sweet...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2005

Have stayed at the San Filipe several times and have had a great time both stays. Going back in Nov., 2005. Filipe is a character but takes care of you. He arranged a fishing trip for us (6 people) that took us up to Tenaquitita (spelling?) via a fishing boat then a small boat through a river looking for alligators then lunch and snorkeling. Back via a fishing boat and we caught a dorado which, Linda, Filipes wife, cooked for our dinner. A great day and a great stay. "Out of the Box" hotel for an "Out of the Box" vacation. Enjoy life whatever it brings you. No Motel 6.
