Just came back last night from the Santa Fe and I was happy with the hotel. We stayed in building 3 which was central to the beach and the lobby and were happy with our room. Clean, and large - although the two beds pushed together for a "king" bed wasn't the best, but not a big deal. The food at the buffets was good and there were lots of choices. We only went to the Mexican a' la carte one night which was mediocre. Other friends said the steak house was pretty good. One drawback is trying to get into the a' la cartes that you like. It's pretty tough. We thought the staff were friendly and we weren't attacked by time share people at this hotel. Another big group stayed at the Palace and they ended up coming to our hotel at night because the Palace was dead. I would recommend this hotel for the 30-65 age group for sure. Can't recommend for families since we are all single and for older folks, there may be too much walking and stairs for them. Mike Tyson at the outdoor bar at night by the sports bar is awesome. David on the beach will get you some good deals on fishing, parasailing, water taxi's, etc but always barter.
For some in our group, they didn't like the location of the hotel because we like to go into the city for afternoon shopping and the nightlife. Lots of money spent on water taxi and van taxi's. We also weren't happy that there were no staff to come to the beach and bring us drinks. We tip pretty good so one of their staff would have made some good cash. The disco like every disco in any hotel I have gone to was bad.
I would stay at this hotel again for sure as there were more positives than negatives. If you want to be treated like a prince or princess, you need to spend about another $3000 at a different hotel, and even then there are no guarantees.
If you go into town and like to have a few drinks, the Happy Ending Cantina was a good place and is owned by Gene, an ex LA cop. He is really friendly and will give you some good tips on places to eat. The Giggling Marlin at night was hopping and they have interaction games with the crowd, some pretty roudy. Cabo Wabo was great too. Ask for prices of drinks though before you order them or you may be surprised.
