My wife and I returned to the Riu Palace Cabo for 14 days in January 6-20. Everything was perfection again. We have been to a few all inclusive’s and 5 RIU’s before this trip.
Hotel: Check in starts when you get off the bus as they put your bracelet on as you step off the bus. It slows the unloading process and you still have to get in another line to get your room key and towel cards. Not the greatest system as no one wants to spend an extra second on the bus so take the hint and sit close to the front of the bus.
Hands down, the cleanest resort I have ever seen. They clean nonstop and even saw them sweeping the roof of the pool bar. I didn't get the best room in the place as the truck delivery and some Mega A/C unit was just outside our door but the view out the front window was beautiful and the pedestrian Idiot traffic in the hall was low. Yes you can hear people in the halls but 99% are your neighbors walking back to their rooms. Can't blame the hotel and I have had the same neighbors in many hotels and resorts that cost a Lot more money.
People. a TIP. PLEASE save your conversation for your room or the next day. Your "whispers" are very loud.
I agree the beds are hard but that worked for me. The staff in the restaurants are amazing as they greet you at every meal and show you to your table, pull out your chair and offer you juice, coffee and Mimosa’s at breakfast; water, wine and beer at dinner. Look for Manuel in the main buffet for breakfast (turn to the left when you enter) and the pool restaurant at lunch. He remembered us instantly when we sat down for our first breakfast and would even sprinkle flower petals on the table for us. The main restaurant for lunch between the two pools has the soft ice cream machine and a self serve beer and pop station.
Food: BOOK the Ala Carte's they are wortth the litle effort of walking up and asking. We booked the Krystal 5 times and only had to book at 7 AM when there were six of us. When we were just two we booked it at 10 one day. The Krystal is the best and the steak house and Misaki (japanese) tie for second. We only ate dinner in the buffet 3 nights as we preferred being served at the Krystal and Misaki. At the Krystal, the Red Tuna on pureed chickpea is incredible and both the Lamb Medallions and Fillet were mouth watering. All of the other restaurants were fabulous as well. The Steakhouse is great with great service and very nice Lamb Chops cooked to your liking and the Steak and Lobster tail were excellent. The Mexican and the Sushi are nice alternatives to the Buffet. And they had a choice of two or three bottled red wines and a hot Saki. As for the Buffet, if you can not find something here that you like you are just too picky. We thoroughly enjoyed the selection at every meal. Lunches offered great hamburgers and as everyone mentions, guacamole, salsa and chips as well as a salad bar with a good selection and the always great Riu soups.
Breakfast as always, Great. How can you go wrong with eggs. TIP. Cut your own bread from the fresh bread table so it is different from the sliced bread everyone else uses. That way, you put it in the toaster and walk away while you get your eggs or whatever you like. Your toast is ready when you return.
The hotel was at about 75% capacity when we stayed, and there were always chairs available around the pool and there are always chairs on the beach even at 100% capacity as everyone is told to fear the beach. Yes the red flag always flies and if you do not know how to swim or tread water it is not for you. There is no under tow but it gets deep quick and the way the waves surge in they can surprise you. The waves can also run 40-60 feet up the beach then run back fast too. Watch the others getting in and out; and watch the waves and you will be able to walk in and bob in the swells until you are done and then ride a swell in and walk out. Contrary to the complainers, the sand is deep and soft. It is made up of some coarser sand at the top of the beach but it gets finer as you get to the water. The beach is usually nice and quiet and you can pull a chair out to the edge and watch the whales and the sea lions swim by. Search Whale and riu Cabo on you tube to see how close they can come.
You can also walk 30 minutes east to the rocks or west to the marina.
Beach bar service; Tip the waiter $5 in the morning and you will have to tell him no gracias because he will not forget you. He is also a good person to ask for $1 bills when you need to break $20’s
I did use the Fitness Center and it was one of the better resort gyms I have seen. There were three tread mills and 2 elipticals with the best view in the world. There are no free weights and the equipment is not what you get here but I wasn’t there to get in shape but just trying to maintain a routine. The spa is also there and if you want a very relaxing massage get it done on the balcony at the spa over the ocean and get it done in the morning before the Santa Fe pool bar crowd gets wound up. Make sure you stress that you want the one on the balcony and not the beach where they do most of them.
Dive Centre will sell you everything the guys on the beach sell you but the guys on the beach will deal if you have a few people. The diving in the area was very nice, with large schools and good visibility. If you want to go snorkelling try booking to go with the divers. We did again and for $25 we got a great ride on the scuba catamaran boat with snorkelling near Lovers Beach and then the beside the sea lion colony and the arch. We also asked the dive master Carlos for wet suits when we were getting my wife’s fins and mask. We got them at no extra charge and in the cool (72 F/ 21 C) water it made all the difference in real enjoyment.
Amazing sunsets and sun rises The nights get a little chilly so take a sports coat or a sweater.
I visited the Santa Fe beach and pool area and found it was the party place if you are between 20 - 30. Their pool bar is definitely the rowdy place to hangout.
We flew Sun Wing through Signature tours and I highly reccomend buying the Gold Service or Elite service as you get to by pass those long lines at the airport check in and you get the front of the plane seat choice with more leg room and the extra 10 KG of luggage allowance.
Beware of waiting to get to the airport to purchase your bottles and souveniers. We were scheduled to depart at 7 PM but were delayed until 8:30. The duty free was only opened for about 45 mins around 6 PM and almost half of the shops were closed. Even one of the two bars closed at 7:30.
The one restaurant/bar at the end by Gate 1. Good burgers but DO NOT get the wings. They have been in the desert drying for a week.
Must DO’s: Get to the marina and wander the shops and restaurants. Water taxi to Lovers beach with the ride past the sea lions and the arch Tip: take the dry cleaning bag from the room and put some bottled water and beers in it and go to the bottom floor and get some ice so you have cold drinks.
Room Tip: Book the good room ahead of time. I couldn't even pay for the upgrade as the ocean fronts were f...
