The airport transfer provided by Esperanza started this trip off perfectly, bypassing all the time-share hawkers, quiet car ride to the resort. We opted not to rent a car and in reality, there was no need to go into town that often, the resort really has everything you need (if you're trying to rest & relax).
For those who are more active, rental car is your best bet as it offers you flexibility. Cab rides into town are around $25.00 each way, so it can add up if you want to spend more time there than at the resort.
Our 2 bedroom, 2 bath ocean view villa wasn't ready by the time we arrived, so after our brief tour of the resort accompanied by a cucumber-cilantro margarita taster, we were then escorted down to La Palapa, which provided our first glimpse of the ocean view that we would be gazing upon for the next 7 days. We had a great lunch and then learned that dining and beverages at the resort would add up easily, especially since we were there to indulge ;)
After being shown to our villa, which was absolutely fantastic, we settled in quickly with complimentary chips, guacamole, salsa and cervezas, that we decided to enjoy upon one of the 2 balconies. Hi Speed Wi-Fi really made us feel at home, even though we were there to relax, we couldn't delete technology out of our lives completely.
Our concierge was extremely helpful, from booking transportation to securing our zip line tour. We made our way to the local Costco to stock up on water, booze and food; Esperanza provided the cab who graciously waited as we sped through Costco picking up the basics.
Highly recommend going to Costco to pick up the basics, you can ever have enough bottled water.
Spa is fabulous, take advantage of it if you can; morning yoga classes are great as well, open air room - perfect way to start your day.
If you prefer a more quite area for poolside lounging, select a chair next to the hotel pool; the pools for the villas are more family oriented. Lounge chairs on the beach are also great. You are constantly attended to at Esperanza, you need not for anything and when you do, you just ask. Everyone there is so friendly, so you immediately start to feel relaxed as soon as you step onto the resort grounds.
My friend and I did venture out into town and had dinner at Los Tres Gallos, (we actually found it on TripAdvisor), excellent food, recommend calling in for a reservation if you have a party of 3 or more, it's quite popular.
We also made the 1.25 KM walk from the resort to the local mercado across the 4 lane highway daily (cars are fast, so be careful) - where the small kitchen serves up tasty basics at extremely inexpensive prices. You can pick up delicious homemade guacamole, tortillas, juices, chips etc (the full kitchen in the villa allows for one to make some simple meals). BBQ grills on the properties allow for outside grilling, so if you're in the mood and have the energy, take advantage of the mercado and the grill.
We were there over Thanksgiving week, so we had our Thanksgiving dinner at Cocina Del Mar, we had a view of the ocean crashing upon the rocks below; what a great way to spend Thanksgiving. The prix fixe menu was delicious, a lot of food and well worth the money spent.
I would definitely stay at the Esperanza again and can only imagine the other Auberge properties are just as wonderful.
