“Clean, good service, and friendly staff”

Ridge Members should have exclusive amenities, we were promised such as buyers. As a Penthouse Member on the Ridge, Internet acess should be included free, as Ridge Members pay large maintenance fees. Ridge Members should have colored wrist bands so that exclusivity can be maintained, (too many non Ridge people gain pool access) and a certain number of pool chairs reserved for Ridge Members. We have paid for the privilege of exclusivity as Ridge Members. Penthouse should have flat screen TV, rugs, and large sleep pillows.

“WORST EXPERIENCE EVER”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

I had no problems booking with Bookit.com. But i would not recommend this resort. If you have ever been to Cabo San Lucas then you know that everyone, everywhere is trying to hustle you. Either trying to get you to book whale watching, fishing, sunset cruises, or a stupid water taxi. That's fine and something you can deal with, but this resort was the biggest culprit of them all.

When I booked this room, there was $200 resort credit. Of course no confirmation was sent to me after I booked with Bookit.com. So I called bookit.com and they assured me it was on the statement they sent to this resort. When I checked in the resort pretended they never heard of it. After a huge hassle, they tell me the credit is there. Then of course when I check out, they pretend there is no resort credit again. Of course I have to go through another huge ordeal just to get them to apply the resort credit.

Additional hustle. When you leave a credit card for the room credit and incidentals you have to sign a blank invoice which is deceptive. If you try to write "deposit only" then you will forfeit any room credit. Then the resort credit doesn't cover tips. So any tips you leave are in cash. And to double hustle you, they automatically charge you tip on every transaction. So don't add in any tip on a blank tip line because you are double tipping AND you can't apply the room credit.

Additionally, they hustle you into time share talks as soon as you get there. Then the bell man tries to hustle you on parties. Then when you are relaxing at the pool they are trying to hustle you again. Then when you book a taxi to the airport they will try to hustle you again saying yo haven't paid even when it is clearly written on your check out statement.

Overall, this was a horrendous experience and I hope no one has to go through the same. Be very careful when you book a resort because it can ruin your whole vacation.

Room Tip: stay somewhere else

“Poor communication, some coercion, less professionalism, more desperation”

We have been visiting Playa Grande for two years during the first two weeks of January. We really like staying here—the rooms, the pools, the beach, location--but things have changed from a management perspective and none of it appears to be in favor of—or with any prior notice to—their guests or owners.
This year, unannounced, management added 10 USD to the annual maintenance fee invoices and to all guest stays as a “donation” to a new charity called The Solmar Foundation. Notices at the front desk explain the additional fee and offer the option to donate more. Another brochure, given right before checkout, indicates the fee is optional. Upon checkout, the fee, which is titled “Donatives” but with no other explanation, is on all invoices and you must ask for it to be removed.
Playa Grande now operates on a completely cashless basis, also unannounced. Charges for everything—meals, drinks, merchandise from the market—can only be made to your room with an open voucher that you must sign in advance (they put a $500 hold on the credit card, which is not a respectful way to treat the owners who have paid many thousands of dollars for the privilege of renting a room once a year).

The laundry room now operates only on tokens, again unannounced, which can only be purchased from the front desk. If you want to pay for tokens in pesos or charge them to you room, you must wait in the check-in line with all the angry guests whose rooms were given away this holiday season; if you want to buy tokens in US dollars, you must bring your passport when you get in line.

Even though we charged nothing to the room during our two-week stay, the $10 Solmar Foundation donation was added and then the clerk insisted on seeing a passport before completing checkout. This is ridiculous.

We also noticed an almost desperate attempt to hawk Grand Solmar timeshare presentations to both Playa Grande owners and hotel guests. An outside firm is apparently responsible for Solmar sales and they have become very aggressive in their solicitation methods. As usual and not unexpected, they try to hook you into a presentation or owner’s update immediately after check in when you get your pool towel cards. Unlike other Cabo resorts at which we’ve stayed, however, some of the Playa Grande hostesses are outright rude if you say “no, gracias.” They’ve pursued us all the way to the parking garage, even after we’ve told them we’d already gone on the owner’s update; it is easier to walk along the marina with all those hawkers than it is to cross the lobby of Playa Grande in the mornings. The last attempt to solicit guests is from an OPC stationed just outside the gate to the resort. He is a very genial man who uses the line that he is an inspector from the visitors’ bureau and would like to see your invitation so he can pirate you back to Grand Solmar. Nice touch.

These issues and others were brought to the attention of sales management during our stay and there has been no response yet. I’m sure their internet monitoring group will respond to this post with their deepest concern and will have a meeting to address the issues. We’ll see if anything is actually done.

Room Tip: most of the good rooms are preassigned by fixed week contracts. Because of the tile over cement cons...

“Some good, some bad”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Had a room on the 3rd floor of the building directly on the beach (building A if I remember correctly). Awesome room and view. At night, my gf had trouble sleeping because the waves crashing were that close, it actually woke me up once or twice...I know, what a tough problem to have.

Anyway, the room was nice. No complaints here. Had a kitchenette, living room, bedroom and 2 bathrooms. A nice balcony. The property was nice and well taken care of.

Some bad. If you stay here do not, i repeat, DO NOT eat at Asian Night. It was seriously the worst meal Ive ever had in mexico, and maybe worst 5 of my life. It was that bad. And if youre like me, youre reading this and laughing saying what an idiot, Asioan night in Mexico, what did you expect? I agree. My gf saw the poster and really wanted it. Do not be talked into it, its that bad.

I had a problem with the pool bar. My gf was down there for some drinks. She told him she was there with her bf and he called the room asking for her later. Shady. Also, had a shot of whiskey she brought back for me, I decided to take it later and wanted it chilled, (it was 95 degrees outside), anyway, I had forgotten about it and the next morning it was frozen...yeah, shocker, they water down their liquor. Also, the pool bar service was VERY slow. 3 bartenders and 5 people at the bar and it took 10-15 minutes to get a drink. Mexico time indeed...

Make sure you leave plenty of time to check out, or do it the night before. It took an hour and a half to 2 hours to check out. Also, the people selling timeshares...it was funny, all you have to do is say youre not married and they will want you away from them as quickly as possible. Keep that in mind if you want to be left alone without the sales pitch.

The people at the front desk were very friendly and helpful.

And of course, as everyone mentions, keep in mind you are on the Pacific side, so swimming is not an option on this beach. It doesnt bother me as I prefer to not lay on the beach with a million other people and the beach sellers constantly harassing me and blocking my view of the ocean. I also like that it is very close to the marina as I go to go fishing and to have nice dinners.

So overall, I like this place, but it is not perfect

On arrival at the resort, we stayed in a room on the Ridge with a view of the parking lot - not nice at all. The front desk was helpful in moving us to a unit overlooking the pools and ocean and we were delighted with the new room and location. What a wonderful place to relax on your patio and look out at the ocean. We loved that the beach is private and that vendors were not allowed on the beach. We didn't realize just how wonderful that was until we visited friends who were staying in a hotel on Medano Beach and the non-stop pestering of the vendors was insane! The staff at the hotel were wonderful - always a smile and hola - everyone from gardener to desk clerk. The entertainment staff were fantastic and we really enjoyed the Mexican Fiesta - extremely entertaining. Cristina and Miram - two of the entertainment staff - should be given special cudos. They were so friendly and greeted everyone by name. They really went out of their way to ensure you were enjoying yourself. One other very special person was Chuy (bellman) who again seemed to know every single guest by name and he was always there to assist with anything you needed. Cristina, Miram, and Chuy are really wonderful ambassadors for the Playa Grande .... be sure to look them up if you stay there!

Room Tip: For views of the ocean, the rooms in the units nearer the beach are best.
