“Keep an eye on your valuables!”

We visited this pub last autumn after reading rave reviews - a very long drive, but we hoped it would be worth it. We arrived just a few minutes after the time for ordering hot food and there was no flexibility about that. Fair enough - our fault for getting a bit lost on the country lanes. After a long wait for a sandwich, we were the last customers to leave - there were only staff there. Walking back to our car, we realised I had left my Calvin Klein sunglasses with our drinks glasses on the table. We went straight back in - the glasses had been cleared from the table and my sunglasses with them. Noone was very interested in finding them, although it was only a member of staff who could have found them. Despite many phone calls to the pub, the glasses were never returned and the lack of concern was evident. I should not have left them, of course, but I would suggest that other visitors keep an eye on their valuables!

“charming hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

A lovely spacious room with wonderful views of the delightful Devon countryside. We had windows on three sides of our very large room. Patio spaces for sitting in charming garden. A wonderful pub/restaurant on sight with loads of cozy charm. Great location for walking Devon coastline.

Room Tip: second floor rooms with open beams in high ceiling.

“Both ends of the scale”

Beautiful location, very friendly and helpful staff. Dinner on both nights were excellent, I ordered steak on the first night which was first rate and the haunch was divine.
Breakfast first morning was very ropey, the bacon looked grey and tasted worse. The tomatoes smelt of fish! Second day was absolutely fine.
The room we stayed in (15) was huge and nicely furnished, excellent bathrooms. But the bed was like sleeping on concrete. I travel a lot (hotels 3-4 nights per week) and that was the worse i have slept in since... I did sleep on a concrete based bed in India. The staff were not surprised when I complained but helpful and soon re-arranged another room. Cosier and more comfortable bed, shame about the gentleman snoring all night next door.
Enjoyed my weekend away but the idea was for my girlfriend and I to really relax, and two sleepless nights scuppered our efforts. Still, would go again but ask before hand about the beds.

“Great food and atmosphere - accommodation good if you pick room wisely”

We stayed in the Mason's Arms as a halfway stop on our weekend walk from Budleigh to Lyme Regis. The village of Branscombe is extremely pretty and the pub is exactly what you would expect - bags of rural charm and extremely welcoming. We were initially given Cottage 1 - this is one of the rooms in the row of cottages behind the pub and has not yet been renovated. This room was extremely small and dark as well as being next to the road so we asked for an alternative - as the pub was not busy we were given a choice and selected a room in the cottages that had been renovated. This was light and spacious with a great ensuite. We ate in the pub that evening and the food was superb. The evening was rounded off by drinks in front of the inglenook fire - heaven!

Room Tip: Ask for one of the newly renovated cottages.

“Excellent!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

Stayed for 2 nights in a cottage suite. Room was really lovely, location perfect, food very good, bar, atmospheric and cosy - beer excellent! A small problem with the drains was sorted out with commendable speed! Staff great, particuarly Helen, who was brilliant.

Small criticism is the bedding - hollofill duvet and (very uncomfortable) pillows.

Nevertheless, definitely worth staying - excellent place.
