booked 2 rooms thru bookings. com at the casa maria,june 2011. read some of the previous reviews, most sounded ok, don't know who posted them!! first the place is misrepsented as it's location, it is no where near the center square, it took 3 local cab drivers to find the place.
the price of the rooms on casa maria's web site was $80 per night less than posted on bookings. com,but we were assured when we arrived that the casa maria price would be charged, but on our departure, managment was no where to be found, and the rooms were charged at the higher price, also we were charged for breakfast which is advertised as included. the rooms are satisfactory, but no even close to 5 star, as advertised, the upper terrace has a nice view, but it is right over a back yard with barking dogs!!
i spoke to the manager after returning home about the excess charges, he again assured me he would fix the problem, he did nothing!!! we were over charged about $500 for 2 rooms for 2 nights.
san miguel is a beautiful city, full of mexican history, but i would advise you NOT to stay at casa maria!!!!!!! butch h.

A friend booked 2 rooms in this 5 star hotel. He read all of these raving reviews about the hotel I think they must have been posted by the hotel staff or the owners. I have stayed in many 4-5 star hotels and this is not even close. Rooms might make a 3 star rating. Charged for extras that were stated included in price. Price quoted was not what we were charged. The place is almost impossible to find. Bad neighborhood! When we questioned the billing we were told it would be corrected. Never was!!!!!!! Much nicer places in the center of town for a lot less money.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay from the beautifully presented, delicious breakfasts to the rooftop terrace sunsets sipping wine and savoring our day's experience of discovering San Miguel's historic areas. Pedro and his staff made our stay especially nice with their warm hospitality. We are enthusiastically encouraging our friends to not only visit San Miguel but to be sure to stay at Casa Maria. We discovered a book entitled "An Insider's Guide to San Miguel de Allende at the end of our week. I wish we had known about it before our trip. I did find it listed on Amazon and recommend it.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. the athmosphere in casa maria is elegant, stylish, and also "homey" and friendly. Pedro showed himself a good and well informed host, the breakfast was good, service up to par.
it is only slightly more distant from the zocalo than indicated by "centro" (15 minutes walk downhill), so taking a taxi back from the real centro to casa maria is advisable.
we had a happy time there.
