“Tremendous view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2010

My wife and I just returned from a marvelous trip to the Copper Canyon. We were with a tour group and spent two nights at the Hotel Mansion Tarahumara. The hotel sprawls up the mountainside to the edge of the Canyon. Our group had rooms along with rim that provided a tremendous view of the canyon plus spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
The rooms were basic, but quite comfortable. We also took our meals at the hotel, and they included many local dishes. All were very, very good.
Access can be a problem. We took the Chihuahua Pacific train from El Fuerte and had a guide pick up our group at the train station. A new park with breathtaking overlooks into the Canyon is being developed nearby, but a rugged, four-wheel-drive is needed to get there. Also nearby is a tram that started operating earlier this month. It takes you across the Canyon and provides an excellent view of the Canyon. Equipment and facilities have been installed to take you across the canyon in a harness, but it is not yet in operation.

“Funky and fun”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2010

We stayed one night and it rained and snowed, which made climbing up and down the mountainside where the rooms are scattered a bit of a challenge.. The large suite had a turret roof and big porch, plus a jacuzzi . It was comfortable altough the heat wasn't great. (not here, nor at any of the places we stayed). We didn't have enough hot water to fill the jacuzzi, but what we had was hot and enough for a shower. The staff was helpful, the food was pretty good, served buffet style, and when we found their bar we were able to get wine (not easy in the rural villages of the Copper Canyon). We were assigned a comfortable table before a roaring fireplace with a singer/guitar player not far away. Others in the big dining room dined in their parkas and hats. Victor led us on a grand morning van tour of the nearby canyon, which was fogged in and rainy but still pretty impressive. Maria, the owner-manager, looked after us nicely and also the dozens of families that were there during the holiday period. It was a good experience, on balance, but not for someone who craves luxury

“Well worth a visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2009

We were picked up at the station and quickly transported to the hotel. Speedy check in and we were driven to our room overlooking the canyon rim. We tried to pick up our own bags but we were not allowed too! The room overlooking the canyon rim was excellent with amazing sunset and sun rises over the canyon rim. We paid GBP 110 for the two of us and this included dinner, bed, breakfast and lunch! The food was of great quality and the breakfast of fruit, orange juice and a choice of pancakes or huevos (eggs to you and me) was excellent. Great value for money. Maria and her staff made us feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. On the day we left, the train was 40 minutes early... and the hotel staff made sure we were at the station in time. We could not have asked for a better place to stay,

Michael and Gordon.

“Great hotel & staff, cozy & memorable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2009

My wife and I and our three young children stayed here for one night in early November 2009. We very much enjoyed our stay. Our room on the rim of the canyon was spectacular, but there was also a room overlooking the town that we were shown first with a loft that our kids would have found just as acceptable. We went for a guided walk with Victor, and Victor also took us, along with a few other guests to Divisadero the next day. At meals, we ate with the people we met on the activities.

We chose this hotel because of our travel agent's recommendation and because of the pool (which we ended up not using, no time). I am glad we didn't read some of the reviews because I am sure we would have given it a pass and that would have been a mistake. This hotel was the highlight of the four nights we spent along the Chepe's route. Whatever it lacks in luxury it more than makes up with charm. We found all the staff, from the administrator Maria, to the restaurant staff, to our guide Victor, to the maid, to all be charming. Being located at a room on the rim was never a problem, even with small children, as someone was always willing to take us up in the truck, and walking down was not a problem. The gas heater in our room worked fine. The only negative I would list is that the bathroom was a bit small.

Some people just like to complain. If you're unhappy about something, use your words! We found the staff to be very accomodating. We would happily return.
