“Beware of credit card reservations!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

We booked this hotel online, thinking the credit card was just to hold the room.
When we arrived we were pleased with the accomodations, service, etc., but......
At checkout we brought out different credit cards to pay, and didn't realize until
we got home and opened our credit card statement that the original booking went
through the same night we reserved and we had paid in advance! No one at the
hotel mentioned that we were prepaid and they gladly ran the charges through again.
Since then I have contacted them weekly to ask for a refund, and it is now three months
later and nothing has been done. There is no language barrier here - owner under-
stands and speaks English quite well. Very disappointed with their professionalism
and /or business ethics! And only because of their lack of response to correct this
issue!

Room Tip: Rooms on the rim are quite a hike up! Not recommended for anyone with health issues, etc., althoug...

“What a View”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2011

people found this review helpful

After some of the places we stayed where the plumbing was iffy and there were weird step-offs in the bedroom, this place was like heaven. Very clean, lots of hot water, quiet, we had a good night's sleep. The only drawback is that if you stay on the rim of the canyon, it is quite a hike to the dining room. But Maria will arrange for someone to drive you back up if you don't feel like walking.

Room Tip: The Canyon Rim rooms are not for people with impaired mobility.

“Staring into the abyss.”

Fantastic hotel in the best location right on the very edge of the canyon but the experience is tempered by somewhat ramshackle organisation. The hotel bus was very much on it's last legs(wheels) so ride it if you must and be prepared to give the driver a push start.

Room Tip: You must have a room looking down into the canyon otherwise there is no point in puting up with the...

“Good Family Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2011

This hotel is a decent alternative to the much more expensive Hotel Posada Mirador, which is a few hundred yards away. You sacrifice the great views of the canyon from the room, that you get at Hotel Posada Barrancas, but you get a decent cabin with a small kitchenette. You so get a view of a normally quiet residential valley (the train passes nearby a few times each day). In our room some of the appliances (refrigerator) did not work, but we didn't have any food to store, so it wasn't a problem for us. In order to enjoy the views of the canyon, you must negotiate a fairly steep climb, and walkway passes underneath another building with a low clearance (watch out if you are 6' tall or taller), and a sharp dropoff of a few (4-5) feet.
Once you reach the top, the view is as good or better than the view from the Hotel Posada Mirador, which you can see beneath you from the top of the hill, but the guard rails are in very poor repair, and the drop from the top is a lot more than just a few feet.
The family-run hotel staff was very pleasant and helpful. The meals were good, and they readily accommodated our vegan diet, although there were a number of annoying flies in the dining room. The main dining area has a castle shape, and it is possible to climb into the turret, a nice attraction for children that like castles, There is a separate building with a very nice clean indoor swimming pool and a small game area. Beyond the view of the canyon at the top of the hill, there is very little of interest within reasonable walking distance of the hotel,. The television had only a selection of 1 channel. Upon leaving, we were informed that recent rain had caused a rockslide that blocked the railway, and the hotel arranged to take us to the next train stop beyond the blockage. They have some arrangement with the train company to do this, but the service was provided to us without charge, an we got to see views that we would otherwise not have seen during our return trip.

“I sure won't recommend this hotel to anyone going to visit copper canyon.!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 April 2011

Please read my report!! My wife and I agree with all the "poor" and "terrible" comments. We got absolutely zero cooperation from the manager, Maria! Whomever owns the place needs to get rid of her because everyone we spoke to had negative comments about her. She alone is responsible for lots of negative comments due to her lack of "bedside manners" and "people" skills!!! We also had a room with a one-cup coffee maker with no coffee provided. When we asked for coffee, she practically told us to "jump in a lake". She immediately would turn her attention to help other people when almost everyone would ask her for help.
We had no choice but to eat in "her" kitchen.dining room. Each of our 4 meals cost us 15 U.S. dollars a piece. One meal was a drumstick of chicken with about 5 small cubed potatoes(because her serving staff would act like Seargeants in the Army). The potatoes were accompanied with a tablespoon of mashed potatoes. My wife asked for a little bit more and the response was "Dios Mio", and made her feel terrible. Also on the plate was a medley of carrots and cactus pieces. The other meal was beef tacos with spaghetti, and a tablespoonful of beans. Hardly a meal for a "Mansion" in Mexico! The price of the meal was not posted but Maria had no problem in charging us 60 dollars for our 2 meals. Breakfasts which were included in our stay were somewhat less disappointing.
To make a long story short, please read this review and heed to our words! HUGE DISAPPOINMENT!

Room Tip: Go to the super nice hotel in Divisadero.
