“Kinnitty Castle an amazing hotel experience.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

The nights stay i had at Kinnitty Castle was just amazing. It lived up to everything i had expected it to. The room was beautiful, situated at the top of the castle and our en suit in the tower. The decor was very appropriate and the bed just amazing in itself. The stairs were creaky but that didn't deter me, it just added to the feeling we were in a castle. The food was presented beautifully and presented with class. All around a great experience to stay there, I don't know how I could stay in a 'normal' hotel again! The staff were very friendly but i wish there had have been a bit more chat out of them. I will definitely be coming back, all around great experience.

Room Tip: Book the Bernard State room, it may be a few euro dearer but so worth it.

Dear Cheryl,

I am very happy that you enjoyed your stay here, all our rooms are very individual and boast tradition and peroid charm, especially the Seret Suite that you stayed in.
I am glad you are happy to visit us again in the future.

“Unhappy Experience”

Booked a 2 day break during February, had booked through Lidl Breaks, which classifies the hotel as 4 star. Arrived at 3.30pm and had to wait until 4.30 until room was ready.
We were shown to our room in the abbey court section, the O'Brien room. The room was tiny, the mattress thin, making the bed uncomfortable and the tap in the bathroom was dripping noisily. We asked to be moved.
Shown to the room next door, same size, but this one had an unpleasant smell, though the mattress was better in this room. Was dissappointed that there was no television in either room.
We were then offered an upgrade to one of the suites as they had a tv, we were shown the De Lacy suite, upstaris in the attic area, again very dissappointed, the room was only a slightly bigger room than the Abbey rooms with a small tv.
While we were in the room somebody walked on the stairs down to the reception, we could hear the stairs creaking loudly.
We decided as the idea of the break was to relax, this wasn't the place for us.
We left and returned to Dublin, a waste of a day, and the cost of travelling

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments. Unfortunately on rare occasions it is unavoidable for us to delay check-in and we apologise for the delay that you experienced on arrival. It is with regret that you felt unable to stay with us despite the room change offered to one of our O’Carroll Baronial rooms. Lidl breaks allocated accommodation is our standard Abbey Court rooms, although we endeavour to upgrade whenever possible on quiet evenings. We do always attempt to deal with guest complaints to the best of our ability and it was with regret that we did not have availability for an alternative room which would have suited your requirements due to our being very busy that evening.

Kind regards,
Katie

“Plenty of Old World Charm, but in need of TLC”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We got a deal for two nights B&B, bottle of wine with dinner in the Sli Dala restaurant, tickets to the castle tour and a welcome cocktail.
We are just back after our weekend in Kinnity Castle. We arrived late on Friday night. The castle looked spectacular with the flood lighting. The entrance to the lobby was lovely and inviting, with red carpet and candles lighting on the steps up.
The receptionist was friendly and efficient. We were shown where the restaurant & bars were told where our room was, down a corridor which was icy cold with windows looking out onto a lovely courtyard and the rooms all individually named on the other side. Our package included an "abbey court room". Our room was small with a very small window. We were settling in when we could hear people from the room beside us enter their room and although they were not speaking loudly, we could hear everything as if they were in the room with us. We asked at reception if it was possible to move rooms, and the receptionist was very helpful and found us a room just a few doors away from where we were. We soon found out that the noise was not due to the people but due to the fact that the rooms are not soundproofed at all - be warned! We again could hear our neighbours but there was no point in complaining as we had already been moved. The decor was as we expected old world charm but the room was in need of a good clean, the floor was dirty, the window also, dusty windowsill, fireplace and side tables. The room was very warm and we could not turn down the thermostat on the radiator. The ensuite was cleaner and decorated in black & white. the toilet roll holder was broken off the wall & sitting on the floor. Compared with other hotels of similar standard, this is the worst I have seen. It doesn't cost much to clean!
We went to the dungeon bar and had a few drinks, there was a traditional irish music session going on and there was a great atmosphere. Apparently its on every weekend.
Breakfast was in the sli dala restaurant and comprised of a buffet of fruits, cereals, cheeses, yogurts. It was possible to get porridge on request but the choice of hot breakfasts was unimaginative with a choice of full Irish or a mini Irish. Not that am vegetarian but there was no vegetarian option.
Dinner in the sli dala was superb and absolutely impossible to fault. I had a starter of crab terrine and a main of lamb and my husband had a starter of tomato, mozzarella, parma ham and basil and a main of duck. Both were cooked perfectly, they came with a selection of mixed veg which were cooked perfectly also. Deserts were also devine. Service was superb, staff were attentive and considering the restaurant was full, they were very busy.
The library bar is lovely, full of charm with a warm atmosphere, bar food is good. Other facilities include the drawing room which is a nice area to sit and read in. There are some walks around the castle grounds also.
The best thing about Kinnitty Castle is the staff and the dinner in the sli dala.
The worst thing is those abbey court rooms that are not soundproofed and the hotel just needs some tlc. The corridors need a good vacuum and wash, chairs and tables in the library bar, dungeon bar, sli dala, windows throughout all need a good cleaning. Its obvious that the hotel is in receivership and its such a pity. Just because everything is dark wood or painted black does not hide the dirt & dust!
We certainly wont be rushing back but glad we got an opportunity to check it out, there are so many hotels in Ireland offering far better value with better facilities. oh.... and we never got the castle tour, which was part of the package!

Room Tip: Avoid the Abbey Court rooms as they are not soundproofed and you can hear everything from neighbouri...

We thank you for taking the time to leave your comments which are all noted. Although the Hotel is in receivership we do attempt to provide the same level of high service that Kinnitty Castle Hotel is renowned for and it is with regret that we appear to have failed in some areas. We do thank you for your comments regarding the food and the staff which are much appreciated. The historical tours are an informal guided tour by a member of staff upon request, and we do apologise for your disappointment if you requested the same and this was not provided.

We hope to welcome you back soon,
Kind regards,

“Perfect Castle Retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We stayed here for two nights. The castle is easily found from tullamore and birr and roscrea just follow the signs for kinnitty. When you enter the castle you are greeted by 8 flagstone steps just inside the door and candles line the way. They have slippers and towels for tired dirty feet. The room we stayed in was the Cormac it had a 4 poster bed and sloping beamed ceilings a flat screen tv and an en suite bathroom. It looks right out the front of the hotel over the lawn. The windows are small so it lends to the atmosphere of the room. If your older or taller dont get the cormac as it has a rather small bed big enough fopr a fella of 5.10 but no more, the room is located up a flight of stairs so if your a bit stiff look for a room downstairs. the hotel is fantastic breakfast lunch dinner and drinks are great value and also gorgeous, the library bar is full of old books and chesterfield suites in snug little areas to sit and gaze at each other. The staff are fantastic they couldnt do enough. Dont forget to visit the dundeon bar downstairs in the friday and sat night, trad music and great craic and very dark and old style. Everything about the hotel is fantastic. If you want a romantic relaxing great value castle break definatley try kinnitty castle it ooozes relaxation and chilling out, free wifi for those who need to contact planet earth. Fantastic in every aspect and will definatley be back.

Room Tip: Cormac - medium size room, small bed very dark and cosy, Maureen- full size four poster larger room...

Dear Guest,

thank you for your comment, the little touches like slippers on arrival, old books by the open fires and traditional music in the Dungeons are what seperate us from any other hotel and make us individual o I thank you for mentioning our qualities, due to the age and the shape of the building, staircases are the only access to some of our rooms however wwe do have a large number of guest rooms available on the ground floor. We hope you will visit us again in the future

“Full of character; very friendly staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Stayed at the castle just for one night. It does have a little of the shabby chic about it but I much prefer that to staying a hotel that looks like any other hotel. The food was very good and the staff were all extremely friendly and attentive. Our room was spacious and warm - the only negative was that the TV reception on the top floor isn't great and the stairs on the way up were rather squeaky. The soundproofing is also somewhat lacking - I could hear my step-mother and step-father talking in the room below us. The castle really is full of character with lots of nooks and crannies to explore and the venue for wedding receptions looked wonderful. Definitely recommend unless you like your hotels 'plastic'.

Room Tip: Not the top floor of the castle if you can help it, but not a disaster if that's what you get.

Dear Reviewer,

I am glad you enjoyed the warm, antique style of Kinnitty Castle Hotel, alot of the points you mentioned are unfortunatly what comes with a castle of this age, something that we are working on is the TV signal in the bedrooms. From a hospitality point of view, food and service are key points in the running of this business and I thank you for mentioning them.
