“This place is a dump with terrible service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

This castle hotel claims to be a 4* hotel, but it is at best a 1* European, or 2* US rating.

The room assigned to us (the Silken Thomas Room) was a dump. It was closer to a dungeon than to a hotel room. There were no windows in the room (except for a skylight in the bathroom and a skylight in the bedroom, both of which had to be covered because of the significant draft. When we arrived (late in the evening), there was no heat in the room, and the bathroom skylight had been left open. But because the heat was on a timer, no heat was able to be gotten into the room since the timer had the heat off.

The lighting in the room was dismal. There was no light near the bathroom mirror, making shaving and putting on makeup a risky operation. The telephone was inoperable, when we tried to call the desk. There was no clock, or TV in the room, things typically provided in a 4 Star hotel. There were cobwebs on the ceiling, and the decorations were like out of a dungeon.

When my wife complained at the reception, there were no other rooms available that night, but we were given a suite the next night (Barnard Room). That was a bigger room, and had windows, but it was also in disrepair. There were holes in the wall, the security chain was missing, the ceilings in the bathroom and bedroom were water-stained and peeling. If that was their suite, I would rate that room no better than a 3 Star, US. (It did have a TV, a clock and a working telephone.)

Their website does not offer a star rating, but the pictures shown do not in any way represent the rooms that we were given. It is obvious that since the bank took over, due to bankruptcy, there has been nothing done to update or repair any of the rooms. They need to spend a few euros to update their facility to 20st century expectations.

However, if you want a real castle experience, with drafts, dreariness, dungeon-y atmosphere, this is the place for you.

Room Tip: go somewhere else, like Birr castle

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review, in response to this I would like to explain why you experienced what you did.
Unfortunately, as the Castle was not designed as a Hotel, we cannot help the lighting that is in each particular room, we are aware that this is an issue in the Silken Thomas Room and we generally would not use this room, however a the castle was fully booked on the night of your stay we had no choice but to. In Order to give our guests a complete castle experience, we boasted the fact that no appliances i.e. TV's were available in rooms, however we are currently in the process of installing a TV in each of our guest rooms. I apologies sincerely about your telephone not working, I do sympathise with this as I know how far away from reception your room was and I would also like to apologies about the heating situation, as the system in not state of the art, unfortunately we cannot control each room individually however we do offer our guests the availability of extra blankets and/or electric heaters. These are available upon request.
The issues that you noted in the Bernard suite are currently being worked on also, our painting team are working their way through the castle rooms.
we do note that there is a trend within your comments and we truly thank you for them and we would like to bring to your attention that since the castle has received a new management team we have been freely able to look at these issues and can confirm to you that refurbishments are ongoing and TV's are now a standard.
We also pride ourselves on our staffs warmth and friendliness and our management teams professionalism, coupled with our very high dining standards and I do hope that you experienced this during your visit.
Warmest Regards
Cavan Dunne

Dear Mr Coogan,

Thank you for your comments, we are sorry that The Hutchinson Suite was not up to your expectations, we take pride in our Bernard state rooms but unfortunatly not all of our guestrooms have 4 poster beds, however these are available on request. We take note of your comments regarding members of our team and we will use these constructively in our continuous staff training. We do try to offer our guests as much variety as possible in both our restaurant menus and bar food menus but as most of our food in locally sourced produce, some food is not as readily available as others which sometimes limits our offerings. We try to offer the best available rates to our guests and give as much value for money as possibe, we do this by continuing to advertise special offers and inclusive packages.
I hope you will come back to visit us again and that we are able to offer you an enjoyable and comfortable stay. Thank you again for your comments

“Castle Hotel . You Can feel the history all around you.”

We stayed here on our honeymoon in October. This hotel appears shabby as you enter. We were a bit early so we explored the building and found ourselves enchanted. The "dungeon "area made us feel that we had entered Camelot! The surrounding area was absolutely spectacular for us. Reception gave us 2 trail maps that start right behind the castle, a 5K and a 10K. We hiked the 5K which takes you up a mountain (gradual incline) through fragrant pine forests. The view of the Irish countryside will not be forgotten.

Our room was fine. Antique furniture, tapestry on the walls and an armoire. The bathroom was clean and the tub enormous! The bed wasn't as comfortable as I like but with all of the hiking we slept fine. Walking through the courtyard and attached areas was fun and we really got a feel of a 13th century castle.

Breakfast was very good in a charming room. The service was top notch.

Get past the somewhat shabby condition at the entrance area and you will have a great walk back in time!

“Horrible from start to finish”

Arrived here for a one night stay having planned it well in advance, really looking forward to staying in a castle. A run down, castle more like.... Our room 137 had damp patches on the ceiling and the television is in such a stupid place that you can only watch it while standing. The bed was very noisey and I didnt get much sleep. In the bathroom there were small flies all over the ceiling and on the lace curtains. Once they didnt appear in the room we decided we could cope with them as we knew the hotel was fully booked upon arrival so there was no point asking to be moved to an alternative room. Our Meal in the restaurant was very disappointing, I had read lots of the good reviews and I am not a fussy person once a place is clean and the food is decent. I would love to meet the people who have left these excellent reviews???? Our waitress wasn't very friendly and my mussels were cold with very little sauce and sauce was sparce on my girlfriends plate also...as well as this the goats cheeses was simply disgusting. Our dirty plates were left in from of us for around 20 to 25 mins and the waitress simply cleared them and never asked if we enjoyed it or if everything was ok? Very rude. We left and returned to out draughty room, I was contemplating returning home at this stage, but seeing as it was my girlfriends birthday we tried to make the most of it. When I was checking out the receptionist mentioned that there can be cluster flies in the premises from time to time and seemed to think this would satisfy me. I refused to pay for our meal as I had pre paid for B & B and we decided to skip breakfast for fear what that would bring. I would recommend that this hotel takes a tim of paing and mends their broken windows, hires a new chef and rethinks how it actually does business. A pityful attempt of a hotel, possibly the worst ever. DO NOT STAY HERE.

“A real Castle experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

Fantastic stay at an authentic Irish Castle. We had a suite with a seperate bathroom with a bath in the middle of the room. The bedroom had a four poster bed.

It was quiet when we stayed midweek but they were preparing for a wedding and the banquet hall was laid out and looked very impressive.

There is a 5km walk at the back of the castle that takes you up the hill and through the forest.

Dinner in the restaurant was nice. The dungeon bar is interesting and it's distinctly colder down there!

Room Tip: Go for the suite
