This place has so much potential, but falls short due to poor upkeep and Management.
You must know what you're getting into before spending your money here. Disappointments aside, this is an "eco-friendly" resort. Meaning no electricity. So, there is a certain degree of "roughing it" in play.
However, when paying what we paid per night (about $290), one should not have to rough it as hard. The website boasts "luxury" all over the place and the pictures definitely make you think it will be. But it's not.
SERVICE:
When we first arrived, we waited in the Lobby/Hut for about 30 minutes for someone to help us, but nobody was in sight. We finally grabbed a cleaning person and asked if they could help us. She went looking for the lobby workers, but couldn't find them. So, we left for awhile, and got a bite to eat and came back. The lobby worker was there and couldn't find our reservation in his high-tech paper planner he had to keep track of everything. After making some phone calls, he says he found it and took us to our cabana. Confusion aside, he was very nice and friendly. We were told there is a complimentary breakfast included with the price. There's not. Unless you call walking next door to the Zahara, where they provide you with a piece of toast and 1 drink breakfast. Because of all the great restaurants around, we opted not get any room service. Housekeeping will come in and clean daily which was nice....but I am 100% certain my sandals were stolen.
ROOMS/SLEEP QUALITY:
Our 1st cabana was dreadful. The ceiling fan was broken and hanging, the wood in the whole place was scratched and banged up, the toilet did not work, and there was blood all over the bedsheets and mosquito netting. We complained, and the worker says that he took us to the wrong cabana, (so he says). The second hut was better. #12. The tallest hut looking over the ocean. It was much cleaner and not nearly as beat up (but still not what the website looks like).
The cabanas are very cool. I totally felt like I was in Swiss Family Robinson. Expect what the website shows, just older and worn out. Absolutely INCREDIBLE view. Our jaws dropped when we saw it. We were quite happy with this hut change for the sheer location right on top of the beach looking over the ocean. There is seriously nothing better than sitting in a tub with a drink looking over the ocean with a book. View our pics.
We went in July and it was hotter than hell. During the day, it's not so bad because you can open up the Cabana's big swinging the doors facing the water and let the breeze roll in. But therein lies the problem. You cannot keep these doors open at night because you will be swarmed by Mosquitoes and Bugs. And if you cover yourself in mosquito netting, the breeze won't get to you. So you have a choice, A) Be covered in bug bites and get no sleep. B) Sweat profusely and get no sleep. Not to mention keeping the doors open means iguanas wander into the room and crap all over the place.
Also, unless you bring your own Lanterns and lots of flashlights, being in the hut at night is pointless. They provide you with candles, but if the doors are open the wind immediately blows them out.
But to us, the biggest drawback of these rooms is there is NO CLEAN WATER. The water that comes out of the tubs and sinks is salt water. And if you've ever bathed in saltwater before, you don't exactly feel clean afterwards. They give you a container of Purified water for drinking, but we found ourselves bathing in this water. After 4 days and nights of sweating and sweating and adventuring around Tulum, we were pretty filthy.
LOCATION:
As said before, the view atop the rocks looking over the water is like paradise. Ridiculously awesome. Our hut had attached stairs that gave us special beach access. Which would have been great if the beach was worth using. It's very small and there was so much brown seaweed on the shore and all over the place I felt like I was back in Galveston. You'd think they'd have someone designated to clean that up. There's minimal seating, luckily it wasn't too crowded. But it is bathing suit optional.....which was interesting.
The hut Being right on the rocks above the shore isn't always a good thing. Because that means anyone has access to your hut. My wife was sleeping outside on the swinging bed (which is great BTW) because she couldn't take the heat inside at night. I was woken up in the morning to my scantily clad wife on the patio covering herself in covers trying to talk to 4 Mexican Soldiers holding M-16s. Apparently she was awoken by them nudging her and speaking very fast Spanish. I walked out there and they wrapped it up and continued on. The lobby guy said the Army patrols the shores for the Sea Turtle Conservation. I call BS. They took advantage of a sleeping blonde chick. Added a little excitement to our getaway.
In conclusion:
If this place was cheaper it would be the greatest place ever. But totally NOT worth what you're paying. My wife and I are no softies. We love camping and roughing it. But not for nearly $300/night.
But Tulum is so much fun and when life hands you crap you make Crapenaid. If I ever go back to Azulik it will be for no more than 1 night.
