“Not what we expected”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

We stayed in the second location away about 700-800m from the main part of Tulum. However that wasn't clear to us from when we booked it. Our fault I guess as we didn't read all the fine print while making the booking in the internet cafe.

The room we got was spacious and Pierre made a nice breakfast every morning. Howevre the mosquito net wasn't big enough to cover the whole bed, which makes it a bit pointless.

Finding a live scorpion in the bathroom was a bit scary, though Pierre did come to get rid of it right away.

Overall I think it was a bit over-priced though maybe that was just during the Christmas period.

We are very sorry about the scorpion you found, we do fumigate but you must consider that Tulum is a jungle area, You even told us that you understood that bugs are part of the nature, so your review shows that this is not true. The cabin where you stayed was very clean.
With all respect you should have booked the shared budget dorm if you didn´t have enough money to pay for the biggest private "palapa" (cabin) and yes, you should read the information carefully before making a reservation.
You came here on extremly high season (December 31st.2011) you should travel on low season so you don´t have to worry and enjoy your trip.

“Little oasis in Tulum town”

This is a small and friendly bed and breakfast located just back from the main street in Tulum. It has a big garden with hammock and trees and attracts a lot of birdlife. Dora and Pierre welcomed me with a big smile and made me feel at home very quickly. The room I stayed in was a simple shared dorm style room with a bunk bed, single bed and a double, all with mosquito nets. There were two fans, a mirror and a table They also had another double room or palapas, which was seperate from the rest of the accommodation. The bathroom had hot water in the morning and evening. A lovely breakfast is included in the price. Something different was served everyday and it came with fresh juice as well as tea or coffee. On arrival, Dora & Pierre presented me with a useful map of the town and gave plenty of advice regarding where to visit, how to get there and the best shops to buy food from, rent bikes etc. All in all I had a really enjoyable and pleasant stay at Palapas, this place is great value for money and conveniently located to the bus station and collectivios.

“Off the beaten track, quiet, homey feel”

I stayed at Palapas Tulum for four nights at the end of March. The owners are a sweet family with several cats and a duck. Dora and Pierre cooked wonderful, filling breakfasts which were included with the price of the room. I stayed in a palapa with two single beds and one double bed, some chairs and a dresser. Mosquito netting kept the bugs out. The bathroom is separate with a shower, toilet and sink. There are other palapas for couples and friends travelling together. Pierre will help you with bike rental, if you want, and Dora told me about the cenotes (swimming holes) nearby that I walked to on my first day in Tulum. This is a laid back hostel with beautiful trees and birds chirping. It's off the main drag but close to the bus station and restaurants.
