Based on the reviews below, I can't beleive peoples' expectations of hotels. This hotel is amazing from a design perspective. It's beautifully appointed and a joy to look at and stay at. I think as Playa Del Carmen grows closer to becoming another Cancun, it invites boring, unimaginative Americans who belong elsewhere rather than an ultra hip and interesting hotel. Do yourself a favor, if you expect so much from a couple hundred dollars a night, stay at a major chain hotel that caters to your straighforward tastes. Otherwise, do something different, appreciate the artists that have striven to create the atmosphere at Basico, stop complaining and enjoy Mexico. Enough already.

The hotel is well located in Playa del Carmen, close to the beach, restaurants and fun things. The staff was friendly. But the idea of staying at this hotel for a week was not palatable. The rooms were just a little too basic. Not nearly enough room to store your clothes, not a single flat surface upon which to set you coffee or drink glass. No bedside table...etc. We were originally checked into a room overlooking the courtyard but felt it provided insufficient privacy. The floor to ceiling windows were not completely covered by the curtains. We advised that the room would not work to us and they upgraded us for free to a city view room. But again, no furniture, and curtains that didn't close. How do you keep the sun out in the morning? Where do you set your coffee cup? I guess this hotel was just not a good match for us. We ended up leaving and checking in to a different hotel nearby. The staff was gracious and facilitated our move without issue. We have walked by the hotel several times during our stay and appears all of the rooms are empty.

it was my first time in playa del carmen and basico was a great find. the hotel is retro modern and the perfect place for a four-day getaway. check-in was a breeze and the staff greeted us very warmly. my best friend and i were originally set for a patio room with a view to a garden , but were upgraded to town view room at no extra cost. the hotel is fabulous! i can't get enough of this place. from the amazing design pool and bar (which can get a little crowded on weekends), the hotel really knows how to treat their guests. the pool was great for taking late-night refresh and a cocktail until 1 am . also if you like yoga, they have an instructor some days of the week.
beautiful hotel, friendly staff, cool atmosphere, wonderful, i can't wait to go back.

parking note: we read about the expensive parking fee close to the main 5th ave , so we parked our car on the street next to the hotel and no problem at all !!
