“Alicia's, A genuine retreat from daily stress.”

My wife and I enjoyed a short vacation in Cozumel recently, and during our stay we made "Alicia's Bed and Breakfast" our home away from home. We discovered Alicia's through Trip Advisor; and although the B & B is not close to the ocean, we decided to give it a try. Our contacts with Alicia via email were answered promptly and courteously and we were quickly guaranteed a room for our stay. Alicia also gave us many valuable, money-saving tips concerning travel from Cancun to Cozumel, as our flights ended and began there.

The B & B is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the Port and Downtown areas and affords the adventurous vacationer a different perspective of Cozumel. Upon arrival we were greeted by Alicia, Chuco and Venadita (the resident dog). Let me say right off the bat that Venadita is in no way threatening (as you may read in another review)... She is well behaved and a joy to be greeted by when you return to the B & B. I really really miss her. Alicia showed us to our room, allowed us to get settled, and later gave us a quick tour of her home. The B & B is surrounded by a very clean white wall with brick red accents and has a nice tiled courtyard with chairs, table and a natural palm umbrella under which you may rest and enjoy some camaraderie. The main home has a very nice living room with a computer, TV and a stereo. Guests may use the computer during their stay. Adjacent to the living room is the dining area and kitchen which are separated by a pass-through counter. Behind the kitchen is a guest room which has an exit door onto it's own little outdoor patio. Upstairs there are two more guest rooms with patios as well as the Owner's accommodations. Behind the main house is a two story structure which consists of two additional bedrooms with baths. Our room was very clean and had white tile floors throughout. The bathroom was also tiled in white and was very clean. The room had both an air conditioner (which very quickly cooled things down) and a ceiling fan. There was a small refrigerator, a night table, comfortable bed and a free-standing closet and drawer set. Each day our room was cleaned, had fresh sheets applied to the bed and fresh towels left for our use. Our shower worked perfectly and we never had a problem with hot water or water pressure. Fresh, potable drinking water is provided for guests during their stay. Everything at Alicia's was clean and nicely painted.

Alicia has a wonderful partner whose name is Chuco. Chuco is an amazingly talented gentleman with a warm smile and quick laughter. He was instrumental in building the B & B and from the pictures I saw of the construction, it is easy to see why the home survived Hurricane Wilma unscathed. Chuco works his morning magic in the kitchen providing his guests with hot coffee, juices, wonderful fresh fruit, his famous Guacamole and a varied main dish each morning. He makes his own tortilla chips daily and on any given morning may prepare omelets, Chorizo, French toast, Huevos Rancheros or other superb dishes. For lunch or dinner there are many wonderful restaurants in the neighborhood, and Alicia can direct you to most of them. These are restaurants which give you the native feel and tastes of the region. You will also find markets within walking distance. Don't look to loose weight while staying with Chuco and Alicia. Taxis are cheap and plentiful, so getting around is not a problem.

All and all you will find Alicia to be a wonderful hostess and a joy to just sit around and talk with. Her pleasant demeanor and relaxed attitude make it easy for you to unwind and forget your cares (having Venadita around to pet doesn't hurt either). Alicia and Chuco run a very nice establishment, and you will find that you can really rest and relax during your stay. My wife and I both recommend Chuco and Alicia's Bed and Breakfast for hospitality, great food and tremendous value during your stay in Cozumel.

Went to Cozumel on my own for a 5 day dive trip back in 2004 just after getting certified and stayed with her on recommendation of Alison w/ Scuba with Alison. Excellent recommendation. I had a great time and Alicia was a wonderful hostess! She looked after me like a mother hen from the start. She took me to the the local Mercado, the bank and local resturants. Walked me through the ins and outs of getting around Cozumel on my own. The breakfasts were excellent, and a perfect way to start my dive day! I am still trying to get my guacamole to turn out so perfect! Gonna have to watch closer next time:) The room and facilites were clean and for the budget diver, her diver room rate can't be beat!! Looking forward to going back:) Hey Alicia - what do you have open for this September? Andrea :)

“Value for Money”

My friend and I just returned from Cozumel, staying 4 nights at Alicia's. On the postive side, the rooms were clean, the breakfasts good, had cheap calling to the US ($1 per call) and Alicia and Chuco are friendly. The only negative was there was no hot water in the shower, and a cold shower after a day of scuba diving is not something I look forward to. After mentioning this to Alicia, she indicated that you had to adjust the shower valve to just the "right" spot. I don't know where that spot was, as neither myself nor my friend could find it. Finally out of frustration we used the hall bathroom and were able to take a hot shower. My disappointment is that Alicia didn't offer the use of the hall bathroom or show us where the "right" spot was. The location is outside of town, and is approximately a 25-30 minute walk. But, a taxi ride into town will run you US $2 or $3 depending on the driver. We never had trouble flagging down a taxi within what seemed like seconds of standing on the corner of 65th and 19th. Overall I think you get good value for your money. If you are the type of person that wants to be in the heart of all the action, this is not the place for you as it is quite a distance from the heart of town. If you don't mind being out a little bit, you can't go wrong staying here.... just make sure you have hot water in your shower if that's something that is important to you.

Located in the Southeast corner of San Miguel,Cozumel. This B&B is like staying with friends or even family.Having good local advice and a house dog to scratch is worth loads in stress reduction.Clean rooms and bountiful breakfasts off of the touristy side of town.Yet 2-3 dollars will get a taxi to the main Plaza at any time.Call Alicia and tell her Tall Joe sent you.She may let you use my snorkel Kayak...Be nice, it pays especially in other countries. P.S. My visit was in December 05,and it IS worth it to go to Cozumel. The beach snorkeling is marvelous.E-mail me for tips I have been 7 times so far and always stayed in different spots around the Island but next time I am going back to Alicia's. “Alicia's --- best value on the island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2005

Four years ago we stayed at Alicia's and enjoyed it very much. I was curious if we would still like it. Well, we liked it more than ever. Alicia and Chuco took great care of us. They treated us like family even though four years had passed.

Dollar for dollar, Alicia's is the best value on the island, that's for sure. The rooms are comfortable and scrupulously clean. A maid comes in to the B&B for five hours every single day. If you can imagine what your own house would be like with a daily cleaning service for five hours, then you can imagine how clean Alicia's is! Chuco's breakfasts are wonderful, and they are a great way to start the day. He is flexible as to timing... anywhere from 6 am to 9 am. Alicia has a U.S. phone line with she allows guests to use for just a dollar or two per call.

The location is perfect if you have a rental car. (We rented from Thrifty on the Internet at a very reasonable rate.) It's on the outskirts of town, which is ideal --- easy to take off for the east side of the island, or the south side, or downtown.

We stayed in the second floor room at the front of the house. It has two beds and a large bathroom and an outdoor seating area. Last month, Chuco added two partial walls in the front section of the house, which make for even more privacy. We felt very safe and secure. We never even bothered to lock our room door.

I strongly encouraged Alicia to update her website because it really doesn't do full justice to the B&B, in my opinion. It's not a luxury hotel --- not at $40 per night --- but it is just fine for what we want. It leaves us more money to spend on food and diving. For accommodations, all we need are comfort, cleanliness and friendliness, and that's Alicia's B&B in a nutshell.

(By the way, I noticed a couple negative reviews that appear on this website that are so contrary to my own experiences that it makes me feel kind of grateful that those people weren't staying at Alicia's when we were there. Everyone I've personally met at Alicia's, hosts and guests, have been wonderful.)
