“Just spent a week.......”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

Just spent a week there with wife/14yr old kid. Had a blast. Hotel is very nice but it starting to show a few blemishes. A little more upkeep by maintenance would put it over the top. Still a few little things from storm damage. Room mustiness reports are correct, but open patio door overlooking ocean solved. As with most hotels in Mexico, floors are VERY slippery. Especially with shoes on in the room. Shower water a little stinky, but again a Mexico problem.

Staff were excellent. Never wanted for a thing. Even after we turned in bracelets, a drink was offered by the hovering staff. Enjoyed all the restaurants, but if you don't have diverse tastes, you will have some favorites.

Tips for staying;

1. Tours booked in mall across the street can be 20-50% cheaper.
2. Read the requirements of the hotel and follow them (ie restaurants). Dress code is not tough for most people, but if you don't meet the very liberal code, you will (and should) be turned away. Same for time of reservation. The dinners are fairly structured and your 45 minute tardiness will not be rewarded by acting all put out.
3. Don't go to an all-inclusive resort in CUN and not expect to see some 'partying' folks. This hotel is an older crowd, but some strong drinking going on. If you are 'younger' (-30), might be a bit too stuffy for you. Saw some people 'screaming' at the manager for some folks being drunk. Really, drunk people at a Superbowl party (we didn't go, but nice of the hotel to offer the service)? The horror! There was an unfortunate accident that was no fault of the resort, but not everyone can handle their liquor and accidents happen.

Overall, a RIU Palace fan for life. Great deal for the money and will return to the brand. I travel for a living and this place was very nice. Not perfect, but for the $$$, no complaints.

Highly recommend.

“Wonderful resort, fantastic trip”

This was my first time at a Riu hotel and I think the Riu Palace is beautiful! My husband and I traveled with 2 other couples and had the greatest time ever..where do I begin...We stayed in room 510 and our room was really nice. They are constantly re-stocking the mini bar and housekeeping does a really nice job. Be very careful of the floors..due to the climate..they seem to be always kind of damp. Its also hard for your bathing suits to dry so bring a few extra just in case so you dont have to worry about drying time. My favorite spot in the resort was the pool bar! We had such an amazing time there..the bartenders are awesome and the entertainment staff do a great job with activities. Esteban was one of our favorites. There wasn't a shortage of lounge chairs just get up early to reserve a good spot by the pool. The japanese restaurant was our favorite. Beware of Krystal..the food was terrible..our group was actually laughing with another group beside us regarding how bad it was..they said they were waiting to see our reaction once we started eating..not good at all! Buffet was usually very good..nice breakfast. if you go to Senor Frogs, ask for Juan..he was one of the managers.he let me dj in his dj booth. I went up to request a song and I was able to make my own playlist..ive always loved the idea of dj'ing so i was super excited! It was early in the day which is probably why he let me..That place was definately fun. Our group also did the jungle tour which I recommend. You get your own little speedboat and go out to snorkle. Music was really fun at the Riu too and a nice advantage is how you can go to the Riu Cancun next door. All in all, a fabulous trip..so many great memories..one of the best resorts I have ever been to..I'm trying to work through my depression of being home and out of paradise..lol. We will absolutely go back to the Riu!

Room Tip: Room 510 has a beautiful ocean view..loved it!

“Great resort - we will be back”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

This was our first time staying at an RIU resort. Upon arriving we were given a sixth floor corner suite. A special thanks to front desk staff Terese. The suite was spacious with plenty of closet space, double sink bathroom with tub (which my wife enjoyed) a king bed and a sitting area with t.v. and a pull out couch. The balcony gave us a view of the strip where the clubs are, the lagoon and of course a full view of the ocean.

The Resort itself
The lobby area is beautiful with plenty of oversized chairs and couches throughout. The lobby bar is large and the service is incredable, they have a piano player early evenings which we enjoyed greatly. Outside under an overhang there are several couches and end tables so you can enjoy in any weather. There are two pools which we found freezing so chose to swim in the ocean. There are plenty of loungers around both pools and of course on the small but beautiful beach. The entire area has wait service which is fast and friendly, and I didn't notice a difference whether you tipped or not. thanks to our favourite waiter in this area - William.

Restaurants

We didn't eat at the Brazilian or the Steakhouse so no comments on those. The main buffet was great with a large selection of food and great table service for drinks. thanks Justino. The Mexican was nice, I actually had a great steak there. Kristal is a fusion restaurant, the ambiance is nice and the service exceptional. The Brazilian doubles as the snack bar and early breakfast bar and is open at lunch with menu service as an Italian eatery. Here too the food is good and the staff great, thanks Carlos for wonderful service. The Steakhouse is open for breakfast and lunch with food from the main buffet. Here we did most breakfasts. Thanks Rebeka for great service.

Staff
This is truely the jewel of the resort.. from the general manager Victor, all maid service, front desk service andf the wait staff at the restaurants, buffet pool area and beach the3 serivce was fast and friendly no matter if you tipped or not.

We will be back.

Room Tip: Higher floor oceanview corner suite

“Excellent Wedding & Vacation! 5/27/10”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

My husband and I and 10 of our friends went to this resort in May of 2010, and had nothing short of a fabulous time! The staff was super nice, the food was good, and no complaints in this dept! We asked for some mixers for our fridge, and we were given carafes of cranberry juice and orange juice with no problem.. Our fridge was stocked daily, and we never had to ask for towels or anything. Our room was always cleaned and we got those little towel creatures made every nite! After our wedding ceremony, which was absolutely beautiful, we came back to our room covered in rose petals ! it was soooo romantic! We also got a fruit basket and bottle of champagne as well! We could not have asked for a better wedding destination! It was everything I hoped and dreamed it would be! We were able to get a reservation at every restaurant that we wanted, with the 10 people, so there was 12 of us total, and we did not have a problem AT ALL. I highly recommend the RIU PALACE to anyone visiting Cancun, and you can visit the sister hotels free of charge, and they have different buffet options! Great time all around! Not one of my friends had a complaint! WAY TO GO RIU! =)

Room Tip: Get an ocean view room, GORGEOUS!
