“Wonderful time!”

My husband and I just returned from a week in Cancun, and have been many times to Mexico. We had a terrific time. The food was outstanding, the beach was excellent and the service was marvelous. We were asked once to attend a session for two hours for timeshare, we declined and never were asked again.
**we did not know we needed reservations each dinner, but was easily chosen (anytime of the day) the entire week and it was awesome food**
The forecast was horrific, but we had sun everyday! There was a beach soccer tournament during our stay and proved not to be a problem in anyway for us.
The only glitch in our vacation was on the way back to the airport, we were informed our flight was cancelled. I think Sunquest and/or Thomas Cook should have informed us. We were put up for approximately 7 hours in the Moon Palace a 5 star resort, which was thoughtful, but we should have been informed by our representative!

“Had a wonderful time! Would go back again!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

My husband and I just returned from a week at The Royal Sunset. We were on a budget and agreeded to the timeshare presentation to get a discounted rate. I was a bit worried that it would be high-pressure, but it was NOT at all. They simply presented the information and let us decide on our own. I actully enjoyed the presentation and learning about the vacation options. We firmly but politely declined the offer and they stopped there. No high-pressure or shady tactics. We enjoyed the rest of our vacation and didn't hear another word about buying the timeshare. That said, I would totally come back to this resort. The beach is simply amazing and HUGE! Surely one of the highlights of this resort. They have these cute beds on the beach which I noticed a lot of the other nearby resorts did not have. We laid on the beach while be served foo-foo drinks all day long, it was awesome.
We stayed in a basic room. For the price we paid, it was nice. Not the lap of luxury, but heck, I didn't come to Cancun to hangout in the hotel room. The beds linens and towels were clean and our room was serviced daily. That's what matters most to me. The staff at the resort was very friendly and helpful with planning our meals and excursions outside the resort.
We had a couples massage at the resort Spa which was wonderful. Monday morning we took a Pilates class overlooking the ocean, AWESOME.
The food was decent. Not the best but not terrible either. I like to eat healthy and there were plenty of options. I had an omelet every morning and fresh fruit, I was happy. I would have preferred more seafood but for the price we paid, I can't complain. All in all, I would go back to the Royal Sunset in a heartbeat. Thank so much for the wonderful memories! VIVA MEXICO! :)

“Been there...would go again...”

We just got home this week from our 2nd time staying at Royal Sunset...
Have had rooms on 6th floor facing lagoon, 4th floor facing ocean & 8th floor facing lagoon. All have their good points.

Its great to have an ocean view...waking up to the sun...but can be very hot in the morning and when the wind is coming off the ocean, it can be noisy against the windows. And no balcony!.

The upper lagoon view rooms are pretty nice. Yes they are the renovated elite suites, with a great lounge that serves specialty coffees & free wifi...all offered to you if you upgrade or purchase. BUT, we did meet a couple who won a free stay at Ocean spa, & paid to upgrade & were placed on the 8th floor of this hotel. These rooms do have a nice size balcony.

The location is great....2 minutes from your room to the beach or to the street where you can catch a bus to downtown, a water shuttle to the other resort or walk to the market in 15 minutes. We brought my sis in law this year & she was amazed at the fact that there was not locals trying to sell you stuff every time you walked out on the beach.
Also the time share police did not follow you either. The people sitting at the desks are not vultures! Actually, they are there to make your trip more enjoyable! You are assigned a concierge at the beginning of the week who will assist you. Ours made reservations at other places for dinner, to watch UFC event, to go fishing & shopping.

Food has been good. Better this year than previous. Room service has always been good. There is always the option of going to the sister hotels to try their cuisine of the night as well. If you prefer, try a night at the name brand places in the tourist area...that should set you back an easy $30/person :)

Everyone has their own opinions & standards. You can make the best of it, if you want!
We have met people down here who have become friends. The staff have always been polite. If you need something, it doesn't hurt to ask! Even if Spanish is not your first language!
Try it...you may just like it...& if you do...maybe we'll see you in the lobby next time.
Happy vacation

Room Tip: If you want a balcony...ask for Lagoon side...2 chairs & a table to relax & watch the sunset...

“Wonderful Time - very much improved!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

This was my 3rd time staying at the Royal Sunset and was there with my fiance. My previous trips were in September of 2009 and May of 2010. My previous stays were good, however the rooms were rather dated and the food was mediocre. Since then the Royal Sunset has gone through a renovation and has brought in a new head chef. The result is that the rooms are much improved and the food was excellent. In a previous review that I posted from a few years ago I rated the food as a 7 out of 10 and was being a little generous, this time however I would give the food a 9 out of 10.

This time I stayed on the 3rd floor in a Studio suite. Since my last visit they have redone the bathrooms and the kitchenette and put in new beds that are much more comfortable. Also the decor is more in line with the times. They have added WiFi to the rooms, however it is not free - but you do get free WiFi in the lobby. As an FYI, the 8th and 9th floors have been beautifully renovated and are reserved for "Elite Members". I have considered upgrading from my current membership to an Elite Membership but I've decided that the standard rooms - with the recent improvements - are nice enough and meet our needs since I don't really spend that much time in my room while I'm there except when sleeping so it is not worth it to me to upgrade at this tme.

As always the service was excellent and the beach was beautiful. Also, the shows that the Royal Sunset puts on each night in the pavillion were very entertaining and quite funny.

For those of you that are not members of the Sunset Group, you should be aware this is a time share resort and they will try to get you to agree to take part in a sales presentation when you first arrive, but unless your visit is tied to a special offer that obligates you to take part in a presentation you can simply say no and they will leave you alone. If however, you are like me and and love Cancun, Playa de Carma and Cozumel and you need something to kind of "force" you to take a vacation every once in a while than I'd recommend checking out the membership options. Just make sure you have your negotiatiating cap on and do not buy into a membership as an "investment" because time shares are NOT investment vehicles. A lot of the negative review that you see on this site are the result of people complaining about the time share presentations or those with buyers remorse rather than actual assessments of the resort. So, if you are going to take part in the sales presentation be prepared to spend about 4 hours and remember that time shares are worthwhile if you like visiting the same area year after year and you need something to incent you to take vacations. They are not a vehicle by which to make money so make sure you go into the presentation wtih you eyes wide open and with the right expectations.

Room Tip: Get a room on the 3rd floor or higher to ensure a good view of either the ocen or the lagoon.

“What a disappointment!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

This was our first time in Mexico and by our 2nd day it was going to be our last! The lobby is clean and spacious however you quickly notice the line of people sitting at desks. These are the sales people. We had traveled almost 10 hours and were beat and the 'kid' trying to sell us a sales presentation was pathetic! His hands were shaking and it must have been his 1st day on the job. We finally said leave us alone we just want to get to our room. VERY pushy!

Well, we get to the 'upgraded' room, only because the adjoining rooms we had asked do not exist at this hotel! The floors were all ceramic, very common in Mexico...however they were chipped, cracked, and stained!! the room was filthy, old and tired looking. They 'upgraded' us to the 1st floor, a suite (if you want to call it that!) just outside where they conduct the sales presentations!! The noise was insane!! Between the crashing of dishes and silverware and the constant noise from people we hardly got any sleep that night! Did I mention we had traveled for 10 hours that day, with 3 kids!.

Anyways, we were rescued when we went to a vacation ownership presentation at the Villa Del Palmar. WHAT A RESORT!!!! This place was gorgeous! 5+ stars and spectacular. We considered an ownership option with them and for that they checked us out of the Royal Dump and into the Villa Del Palmar for the week...thank goodness!

The food at the sunset is horrible. I read some of the other reviews on this page...let me ask you...does boiled fish and boiled chicken, thin hamburger patties cut in half and doused in ketchup, partially cooked pasta sound like elegant cuisine??? Yes, I like good food and when you spend $900.00 per person for an all inclusive option...it better be good food! and good liquor.

Anyway, that's my take on this place. DON'T WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED VACATION DOLLARS!

Room Tip: Tip to choose a good room....stay at another hotel! So very disappointed in this hotel.
