“My One Complaint”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2008

I spent a week at the hotel. About the second or third day the maid did not leave as many towels as had been left before, then the next day the same happened. When I called the front desk to ask for additional towels I said -- rather incorrectly -- that maid service had gotten worse each day. When I returned to my room the next day after an all-day trip to Chichen Itza I found what is shown in the attached pictures. One new problem was that the maid had turned the room temperature very low to keep the flowers from wilting. I thought I was going to freeze to death. I didn't complain about anything else afterwards.

For the record the room, the beds, the bathroom, everything was very clean, the beds were very comfortable, the towels large, the breakfast each morning adequate. Each room has a patio and I used mine to dry clothes that I washed, since I had only brought about 4 days clothes for the seven days trip.

To get to the hotel from the airport I had reserved a shared shuttle online from BestDay. The Cancun International Airport Web site also has approved shuttle services. I used the latter from the hotel to the airport, but that was a minor problem, one reason being, I believe, that people usually reserve a round trip and they were not set up on their Web site to serve someone trying to make a reservation TO the airport.

There were many companies to choose from for the Chichen Itza tour, most of which seemed to have the same itinerary and a similar price. I ended up choosing Best Day -- a known devil. It was fine, but I guess I had "bus envy." All the other tour buses towered over the Best Day bus. There was a company, I think called Cancun Fun Tours, that looking back I wished I had chosen.

All the hotel employees were very helpful. The only area where they were usually lacking was in responding to requests for information on restaurants. They didn't seem to know or to be known as knowing about what was available. They did recommend a restaurant about a block away which gave a 20% discount to anyone staying at the hotel, but they only mentioned it when asked. The golf club along the street leading to Avenida Kukulkan serves breakfast on a rather strange schedule: from 6 to 7, and then from 8 to 11. After that it serves a light (sandwich type) menu from 11 until closing around 6 PM.

There is a "concierge operation" in the lobby that is unrelenting in trying to get one to visit time-share properties. I was never lonely, because they sent notes to my room almost everyday asking me to stop by. The only time any of them was actually helpful was when my transportation to the airport didn't arrive on time.

To get to the beach club used by the hotel one must take the van that leaves either at 9 or noon. Supposedly one returns every hour. I never used it, being not much of a beach person. Also, I found the beach area at Playa de Tortugas, along the bus line towards town, to be lively.

There is a well-stocked little grocery store across the street from the hotel. It had the best prices for drinks, including beer, and snacks that I found anywhere. There is also a small deli a few doors farther down the street that I never tried.

I used the city buses to go back and forth to the Zona Hotelera and downtown. The walk to the buses is a good half-mile and was rather daunting in the mid-day heat, but still good exercise. There was always a breeze which made it tolerable.

This has become much longer than I had intended. I only meant to tell about the maid story.

“Nice and not expensive hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 April 2008

It was difficult to find a very good hotel, with pool, not far away from beach and for an acceptable price in Cancun. I red some opinions on Internet and finally decided to choose this hotel. It is located on small peninsula in Zona Hotelera, close to Cancun Golf Club. It has "C" letter shape, with two floors and swimming pool inside (see pictures). The reception desk people speak english and are very helpful. The breakfast is fresh and you have a choice of ham, eggs, vegetables & fruits. There are funny birds which are very smart and try to steal the food from your plate ;-).

The hotel is about 10 minutes walk from the main road where you can catch a bus or taxi to beaches, shopping center or Cancun City. The hotel is located in a quiet neigbourhood - it is even very nice just to stay in the hotel and have a rest in the pool.

The price was high as for Mexico but very good as for Cancun (approx. 95 USD including breakfast for a room for 2 persons).

We were satisfied staying at this hotel.

“Enjoyed the Stay”

We spent 4 nights at this hotel. Not fancy but very good for the price. Staff friendly and helpful. Great pool. Excellent free breakfast. There are stores and resturants a block or two away.
Deffinately have lunch or early dinner at the golf coarse 3-4 blocks away. Food was great and the price reasonable. It is less than 10 minute walk to the bus that will take you anywhere you want to go. We spent an additional 6 nights at the Hilton which is nicer but more money too. I would use this hotel for a nfew days to relax and see some sights before moving to a fancier place on the beach where I wanted to spend most of my time on the beach and around the hotel. It is a good value.

“Great value if you don't need to be on the beach”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2008

We needed a hotel when the airline botched our travel plans, which didn't include staying in Cancun. We picked HIE because it wasn't on the strip, and had free parking and breakfast.

They quoted us a high rate, but asked for and got it lower. Two couples (one with a child) and we got two rooms for $85 USD each. Rooms were comfortable, not luxurious, but clean and airy. Rooms have balcony, cable tv, and nice bathrooms. Local calls are free, too. Bathrooms are well equipped and updated.

The "concierge" in the lobby is a paid tour coordinator, and couldn't help us with anything at all of substance. But the front desk staff were great, and tried to help us with obtaining phone numbers and contacting the airport.

Power went out for several hours, but that was a local issue, not a hotel-specific one. The hotel had a generator up and running within minutes for lights and doors. We had flashlights (travel tip: going to Mexico? Take a MagLite!) so didn't need to avail ourselves of their candles and matches! Water continued running.

Breakfast was excellent. There were hot breakfast choices like Chilaquiles, refried beans, scrambled eggs, potatoes and bacon; as well as regular cold fare like cereals, yogurts, fruit, breads, etc. It was fabulous. All four adults were raving, and the kidlet certainly loved her breakfast!

Pool was clean and refreshing. Lots of loungers and space. Courtyard bar was okay, but a little slow and understocked.

The location requires cabs ($6 USD, to get to the strip), taking a bus, driving, or hopping on the free beach shuttle. We drove to the strip when we went out to eat, which took all of five minutes, including parking. Not a big deal. The hotel has a small "tiendita" that stocks water, snacks, souvenirs, and necessities. The lobby is beautiful, considering this is a HIE!

We found this hotel to be such a great deal and wonderful find that we came back on the night before we flew out of Cancun. It was, again, a good experience -- including another low rate.

If you want a reasonable spot to stay while in Cancun, away from the mayhem, try this hotel!

  • Liked — Price, breakfast, distance from the main strip.
  • Disliked — We had double beds, but queen was an option.
