“Good location,excellent beach,excellent food,staff so so”

We chose this resort because it indicated it was within walking distance to shopping and activities. This was important for my husband and I since it was only going to be just the two of us. Keep in mind this was our first time in Cancun but 4th time in Mexico. We've stayed twice on the Mayan Riviera side. Some of my nickpicks are based on resorts we've previously been to so we have a comparison. Also, we are accustomed to traveling with others and this time it was just us two. Also our age group is between 30-40. Our first complaint was that we paid a premium for an Oceaniew room and we were given a room on the 2nd floor facing a bunch of palm trees and the main pool! They werent able to accomodate us that same evening but Roland and Monica fixed it the following day and we were put on the 6th (top floor) and the view was AMAZING!
If you dont want to do a presentation tour (time-share thing) then say No off the bat. We were called in our room by Monica asking how our room was and when we complained she said to come down and she will fix it. She fixed the room but also asked us to see the presentation tour. We got lured by a few goodies to take part in the 90 minute presentation. There is also a booth outside of the hotel and they will offer you 50% off any excursions but you have to see a presentation (and this lasts up to 3 hours, as we were told by others who got suckered)
Being on vacation for us means we take advantage of a full day and evening..hoping to last into the wee hours even. Unfortunately, the last food is only served til 11pm. However there is 24 hr room service, but the selection isnt the greatest. The entertainment staff is excellent. They are VERY hard workers starting in the mornings at the main pool until about 10pm for the nightly events. The rooftop lounge Equinox is beautiful but under used. The music and bar staff there are very somber and I wished it were more lively. This I found the same at the Budha bar. It would have been fun to have an area for dancing as well- but this is from our personal experience with a resort that had its own disco.
I didnt find the staff particular over friendly either. We are used to VERY friendly and funny staff from the front desk, waiters and bartenders. Here it was hit and miss.
While there is a mini-fridge in the room I wouldnt call it a minibar. It is stocked with only water, pop and a couple beers. We've stayed in resorts that stocked it with hard liquor by the bottle. BUT the 2 bars are open until 1am so this isnt a deal breaker.
The A La Cartes are AMAZING! Service is amazing and the food is fabulous. They obviously want to have one waiter per table so they dont take too many reservations at one time slot. You have to be physically at the restaurant at noon to book your reservation and they will not let you book more than your actual occupancy. A family of 4 tried to book 2 more spots for us but they wouldnt allow it. Also they will make a stink if you try to have a child under 12 in there- no matter how mature that child is. There is a huge disconnect between phone and in person A La Carte reservations. Everywhere is written that you can dial an extension after noon to make a reservation but when you call they will tell you, a)you can't do it OR B) they will take the reservation but the people at the restaurant will tell you the reservation does not exist!! So I suggest you physically go to both the A La Cartes at noon as soon as you arrive and book in advance for other days.
The buffet offers a different themed food every day. No chicken wings and fries here!
The buffet and casual a la carte La Concha requires men to wear sleeved tops so keep this in mind guys if you are wearing tank tops. At the buffet you will have to sit outside and the women will have to go in and get you your food!
The resort lacks seating... from the lounge, bars, swimming pools and beach! And we were there during off season so I'd hate to see where people sit during Prime season!
The beach is spectacular. Few peddlers. It's super clean and big. Daily someone would be digging holes to cover the seaweed in the sand. The resort is also very clean. There's always someone painting, wiping, moping and sweeping.
I also found it strange that they were a bit stingy on some things? At the breakfast buffet they will not put the bacon out...you have to ask for it and they will bring it to your table? One night we were looking for munchies so at Cafe Sole (where they serve salads, sandwiches and ice cream) they had plates of deli meat behind the counter- so we asked for some. We went back to get some more as they would only give us a couple slices at a time. The following evening we asked for the same thing and was told it was "for viewing only" ??? and that we were only allowed the pre-made sandwiches??!!
The location is also great. It's pretty much at the center of a lot of shopping and nightlife.
Overall the resort is very good and we enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: If you can get a room in the Premier building do so. It's Beachfront and newer. If you can get a...

“Good resort - Pros and Cons”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

My husband and I were here in Feb. We have been to Cancun before, but never to an all inclusive. Here are my pros and cons -

Pros – Great gelato in the café, resort is prettier than the pictures – great landscaping and lots of palm trees, loved the Bali beds (get there at 7am to use one for the day) Italian restaurant is great (be in line at 11:45 am for a reservation), lots of options for privacy and shade, great beach – massive, great staff – they work really hard, great water pressure in shower in main building

Cons – The beds are really hard – if you like a soft bed, this might be tough for you. I am not a picky eater, but I have to say I thought the buffet was really weak (aside from breakfast), and the hamburger and pizza stands were like bad ballpark food.

Good bars and drinks. Fun atmosphere but lots of space for privacy too. Good location on the strip - you can walk to the Flea market and to Margaritaville.

“Great view and great food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

My husband and I stayed at the hotel for 5 days in early January 2012, finishing tour through Mexico with some days rest before heading home to Europe.

Our impressions on the hotel are quite positive, mainly:

- entire resort is impeccably clean and tidy, it was really impressive seeing people cleaning even top side of sunshades from birds “work” , daily
- we were placed in the main tower on 5th floor and had great view to the sea; enjoyed having our morning coffee on the terrace (it is very small terrace tough)
- room was spacious and comfortable, although somewhat outdated, but nothing that would be some serious drawback; have to mention bathroom with shower fixed on the wall which I disliked and also there was no shower cap in the bathroom; I asked maid about it and she said there are no shower caps in the hotel (??)
- food in the resort was fantastic for all inclusive standards, this referring only to buffet restaurant in which we had all our meals; we liked selection, food was fresh and changed constantly, there was plenty of fresh fruits and salads for every meal, and we liked possibility of sitting outside on the terrace near the main pool (as we’re both smokers), so we didn’t even bothered with Italian or Asian restaurant
- service in the buffet restaurant was very good, quick and polite; however tips are expected to maintain attention and we were OK with that, as we spent really lot of time at the place, using it not only for having meals, but also as our main “base”, bar etc. Waiters get soon familiar with us and our habits, so they would bring us espresso coffee from another bar whenever we wanted, and always kept our glasses full
- hotel is on walking distance (some 20 minutes) from shopping mall in Zona Hotelera and even closer to flea market, which was useful to stock with souvenirs

Reception desk service: OK, but some more enthusiasm out of routine work would be helpful. I left postcards to be sent from the desk and they never arrived, so I wonder what happened with them (not claiming that it’s a mistake of reception desk! as I really have no idea).

Hotel charges quite expensive 0800 calls, which are supposed to be toll free numbers (I was trying to reserve term for dolphin swim in nearby hotel). You can make free call from the public phone in front of the hotel, but I didn’t bother to go out. However, it was quite odd this phone policy.

There is no free Wi-Fi, I bought 24 hour access from the machine in the lobby (200 pesos or 15 USD). This was quite a drawback, but I learned this from other reviews in advance and just took it as it is.

We also didn’t like lack of evening entertainment in the hotel; they had some life music on some days in a buffet restaurant during dinner, but it was for a short time and I wouldn’t say that musicians were of any decent quality . There are however some popular night clubs on walking distance from the hotel, which is great for youth I suppose. There is also daily entertainment near the main pool, I see that people near the pool enjoyed it, although it’s not my cup of tea.

I left beach as a separate section of this review, as beach is particularly important to us, we never spend time on the pool. As is visible from all photos of other reviewers, beach is really nice and we liked that there are not many people on the beach. As everything else in and around the resort, beach is clean (although if I understand well all beaches in Mexico are public for some meters, which is the reason why hotel doesn’t have facilities like bars directly on the beach) and sand is very nice and pleasant. We have always found spare beach chairs. For us who grew up on very different sea, it was quite annoying that water is so shallow for hundred of meters from the beach, while currents very hard in deeper water, so we didn’t enjoy swimming in a way we are used to. It was also quite wavy, I suppose it’s result of windy weather. But it was still fun to soak in Caribbean Sea.

All in all, if I would visit Cancun again, I would definitely choose this hotel again or would recommend it to others. Despite these few minor drawbacks, I think this resort is very good value for money.

“Good and some not so good..”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We are a couple in our early thirties and just returned from a 2 1/2 week stay @ Grand Park Royal.
Our over all experience was very good. The resort was extremely clean. Everywhere we went staff was busy picking up everything, moving chairs back to place, emptying garbage, even refilling food at the buffet before it was half empty. Several nights we would grab a drink and sit in lounge chairs by the pools to watch the stars/ listen to the ocean. It was amazing to see workers sanitizing the beach chairs, sun beds, and even all the stones around the pool.

We had a 2nd level room of the tower. AC worked great, very clean, 4 sodas 2 beers 2 waters in mini fridge daily. Bed was very firm but I am lucky that that doesn't bother me. Average updated decor but kinda dingy shower.

Food was always fresh, and something tasty for all. It was a huge surprise how much we enjoyed the italian and oriental restaurants. Room service has a small menu however everything we ordered was very good and delivered in 15-20min. Snack bars were so fun. Pizza hot and fresh. Burgers, dogs, and nacho station delish and so easy whenever my bathing suit was not quite dry enough for buffet. LOVED getting ice-cream or cappuccino @ the cafe.

Drinks and bartenders were fantastic. We did have a certain brand of alcohol that we preferred and if you asked they had no problem being generous.

One pool was for siesta and one for fiesta! The entertainers were fun and very sincere in their efforts for all guests to have a good time.

The service here was very good. Everyone is quick to ask if you need something. The resort is pretty and appears to be updated.

We had two issues with this resort. The first was that there is no bar near the beach. The beach is really wide it's kind of a trek and if you were on the side of the beach by the infinity pool the climb to just get a drink is really far. Also drinks were served in small white styrofoam cups that didn't hold much and would blow away with the wind. While I care about the environment I am not a freak about it and even I couldn't help think of the impact of the daily thousands of cups and plates. We stayed 8mo ago at another resort in Mexico. Their use of pretty, clear, plastic decorative cups and that they delivered to our chairs made a bigger difference in our experience on vacation than is realized.

Our second issue is beach chairs and shade. While we did have chairs daily, this was only due to the fact we are early risers, out there by 6:30am daily. Watching people around us I really think if you do not get there by 7:30am you are SOL. In the afternoon that sun is so brutal. I really did feel bad for some that just could not find shade. However some guests do not have any manners nor respect for others around them. We witnessed several arguments over chairs, or towels reserving chairs while the owners of those towels wouldn't show up until afternoon. I can understand why tempers flared while people look at those empty seats with towels for hours. Meanwhile they are sitting at plastic tables and chairs because there was literally no beach chairs left. Or if you get up to go to the bathroom or grab lunch your chair could be taken or pushed out of the shade. We have been on vacation several times, several locations, with a group of people and just ourselves. I have never felt paranoid about our daily seats in my life. One day while reading another guest keep pushing her beach chair into mine to push me out of the shade. I told the front desk manager several times what a problem this is and he was very understanding and polite. I know there was not much he could do.

We did not let these issues ruin our trip. We had a good time and focused on the many positives of Grand Park Royal and it was a good deal for what we got. It's close to shops and restaurants. The beach is beautiful, the ocean is so clear. We will probably not return but it is not due to any horrible flaw with this resort. I don't think Cancun or the people in general that it attracts are something we are looking for on vacation.

Room Tip: Make your reservations for dinner early!
