“Roulette 5-star reviews unfair to this resort.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

First off, I've been to 50 Westins and although this resorts facilities don't rank up with the newer ones, it's not fair to hammer the place for not being a 5-star resort. Roulette ranks them improperly, and that is their fault, not the Westin's. If I were the Westin I would ask Roulette to drop them to a 3.5 star or possibly 4-star and that would take some of the fire out of the reviewers.

Other comments:
1. As an SPG member, they upgraded me and I took another step up to the Royal property side with free b-fast and drinks. It's worth the extra points.
2. If you like quiet, this place is for you. We love quiet, so it was perfect for us.
3. Beach area is great. It's not very wide, but areas around pools are very good. Service is fantastic. I really won't complain.
4. I'd say this place would be a 3-star Sheraton by room quality. The quiet beach of the end of the strip definitely kicks it up to 4-star quality.
5. If you book SPG or priceline, you'll pay less than just about anywhere else on the zone. People should factor in the value/cost of the hotel room before hammering it. Is it 5-star like some of the other properties on the strip? No way. But those other places are paying $300 a night and here you pay less than a third of that. Have some perspective.
6. Food is just OK. I write food reviews and they made no attempt to woo me or even let me sample different entrees. I almost gave this property a 3 over the food quality and service but the service was so good on the Royal side, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. However, I must say this. It's almost unfair to the Westin Lagunamar to give this place a 4 and them a 5 b/c Lagunamar is MUCH nicer than just 1 star more. If I could give a 3.5 rating, I would.

Room Tip: The Royal Beach club is a half-step up from the rest of the hotel. I'd say it's worth $50 e...

“Excellent Food Very Quiet”

We booked for 7 days and loved the hotel. Our room was on the ocean side but either would offer a terrific view. The beds and linens were very comfortable. The bathroom could due with some updating and I was a little disappointed in the cleanliness of the bathroom and floor areas. There were lots of lounge chairs so need to wake up at 6:00am just to find a spot. The food was amazing always fresh and plenty of it. The only problem was at nighttime. The one available bar closed at 1200am. Im not one for big shows But they could at least offer a live local band or DJ some music.

“Not bad for the $!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

We went for a long weekend (4 days) and got a great price per night from the Starwood site as we are Platinum members (we didn't even look elsewhere). We didn't mind that it was at the beginning of the hotel strand as we didn't plan to leave the resort due to the length of our stay, the weather (rain off and on every day), and the fact that we had our 4 year old with us. When we checked in, the person didn't even tell us how to get to our room. They pointed down the hall. It ended up being in the next building. But we had to figure that out on our own. The room was nice. The hotel overall is run down but okay. The pools and outdoor areas are nice. There are some great shallow pools (2.75 feet deep) that are perfect for kids. The restaurants are so so. Not the best Mexican food I've had. And it seems to be geared towards not very adventurous eaters. There's nothing to do when it rains except stay in your room - which was fine - but when our son is older, this won't be the place to stay with him. On the third day we found out from our breakfast waiter that the breakfast in the building we were staying in was free if we ate there. Um. Shouldn't someone have mentioned that??

Overall - a nice, clean, decent place to stay. It's nothing fancy. And the customer service is not the best, but for a nice weekend in Mexico, it was great. We'd definitely stay there again if we got a super cheap rate.

“The truth about this property!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

As a past hospitality manager and an avid traveller, this property is great value! It frustrates me to no end when some travellers are so picky and do not pay attention to value. Yes this property may not be a North American 5 star, but it is definitely much better than the highly rated properties south of Canada. The truth about this property: Beds are fantastic, size of room, cleanliness, air conditioning, Westin shower, water pressure, staff, beach, t. v., internet (speed+), pools (temp +), activities, quality of food were all great to better than most. Disregard the majority of the negative crap and give yourself the opportunity to have fun at a great price.

If you are searching for large noisy groups that party hard, skip this property! If you are looking for a place to relax, exercise, enjoy good food without paying an extreme price, the Westin has it. By the way, the staff in Cancun hotels do not get paid very highly, buy some pesos and reward the staff.

You can bring snorkle gear if you wish and snorkle on the other side of Club Med, bring water shoes! The ocean temperature is great in February.

Room Tip: Take advantage of the number one Tour and book through Cancun discounts for a 15% discount and Dolph...

“Sunquest roulette 5? Your going to the Westin.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

First off, most of our displeasure is caused from Sunquests false advertising of the all-inclusive Roulette 5 deal. Everyone ends up at the Westin. The rep even admitted this to us once we arrived at the resort. We were told that the resort is the closest to the airport (about 10minutes). We were then taken for the milk run around the entire strip which took an hour at least and ended up being the last to be dropped off, not the first which made our arrival a bit enjoyable since the bars were closing when we arrived.

The Westin has a beautiful beach and pretty good food. The food we ordered off the menus at the restaurants were all pretty good.. as long as you had time to wait 2 hours to get it. To counteract the fact that we were not paying cash at the bar and some were per drink, we tried to tip well and this did not seem to make a difference in general. One great server was Pablo and his partner who were very friendly and gracious. They did not seem to separate us from the other non all-inclusive guests. Luiz was great as well.

We heard the resort is just in transition of changing from an airport hotel to an all- inclusive.. this made a huge difference from staying at an all-inclusive only resort. We felt a bit like second class travelers compared to those who paid separately (understandably). We heard that the hotel is quiet at night but it kind of felt like vacation purgatory. The lobby bar is the only one open after 6pm, with one and sometimes two bartenders. There is no music and the bar itself is pretty awkward.. this forces you into town because there is no entertainment after 6pm. We were told the second night that we are no longer allowed to have cans of beer from the bar, when we were allowed the first night. Also, we did not expect to have premium liquor but the selection was very limited.

We were also refused several times when ordering espresso and were told that this is not included (which it is). One morning at 10:30am while laying by the pool, the server asked a couple quests who did not have all inclusive wrist bands if they wanted anything to drink.. as the server passed I asked if I could get a bottle of water and was told that all-inclusive doesn't start until 11am. He then brought the guests sitting beside me their drinks.

We did not mind at first having to sign the bill after every meal/drinks at first but it became a bit annoying having to wait around for it every time. Sometimes this took a long time for them to bring it.

We saw an entertainment director one day who was very nice and we played volley ball with him. (The day the Westin suits were walking around.) He had other games he played with guests throughout the day.. it was too bad that he was not around all week. (though we didn't expect this).

We ordered room services a few times and we were never brought was we ordered and were reminded that we were all inclusive when we called to let them know of the mistakes. (not sure why we were reminded..we remembered!) The plates of room service food was left in the hallways sometimes all day which didn't really bother us if we didn't notice a large roach eating from it one day.

The one night we decided to sit in purgatory (lobby bar), we noticed they had a small buffet set up beside the bar with two people eating from it. We walked over to grab some food and we're quickly stopped by a bartender and told that this food is only for the royal beach club guests.. yet this was not in the royal beach club building. I'm sure all this food was wasted unless the 2 royal guests ate it all. This made purgatory even more unbearable.

Overall the beds were extremely comfortable but the rooms were nothing special. It took about 20minutes to get into town by cab at night which wasn't bad. If you need to stop in Cancun for a few days then the Westin would be great because it does have a beautiful beach and is extremely quiet at night (we slept very well), but I would not recommend all-inclusive for a week.

We will never travel with Sunquest again because they are a dishonest corporation and did nothing to appease our concerns. Many other travelers who were with our all-inclusive group had similar concerns. We felt very mislead and tricked with the roulette 5 deal because you have no equal chance to get any other resort. We were told many times by Flight Center as well that we could not upgrade because all other resorts and rooms were booked.(bull.) Flight Center seems to be involved in this scam as well.

Room Tip: Don't do all-inclusive.
