We stayed at the Dos Playas for 2 weeks at the end of Jan to start of Feb 2012. Our room was basic, but comfortable, the A/C was loud (we reported it to reception, who sent someone up, but it was no better, but by aligning the front cover and then giving it a sharp bang now and again sorted it out!) The bathroom had some damp showing through the paintwork, it wasn't mouldy but it needed an extractor fan. The shower had hot water most of the time, only when the hotel was full, was it a problem (2 afternoon showers after a day on the beach were cold.)
The biggest problem for us was the lack of a proper bar area. The choices were a hatch attached to the restaurant or the snack bar which closed at 5pm! When the weather was not so good there was nowhere to sit that was sheltered, unless the restaurant was open.
We were on an all inclusive package which meant that most of our meals were self service buffets, the food was varied but a bit hit and miss. After a few days the breakfast made me very unwell stomach wise, but after changing to cereals first thing, these troubles soon cleared up. The waiting staff too were hit and miss, they fawned over the people who weren't AI because normally they got the change from the price of their meals as tips, to the detrement of all others! You would often have to grab the waiters attention to ask for a drink, and even then they did not always arrive. We only tip for good service, and that was very unlikely here. I will mention Abraham, Armando and Victor as at least they tried.
The main pool looked fine, but was right next to the DJ box and restaurant so didn't really appeal to us. The kids pool by the snack bar looked clean and tidy too.
The beaches were broken into 2. The beach to the left of the hotel (as you look at the sea) was cleaned of seaweed daily and a token rubbish pick was also carried out. You could even have breakfast or use the bar of the Maya Caribe with your AI bands, but we found this out from other guests, not from any of the staff. The beach to the right (by the ferry jetty) was dirty, full of cigarette butts, bottle tops etc. Further along by the rocks was full of cans and bottles etc not very nice.
This place was cheap, and once we got the idea that we weren't going to get much service, it was actually quicker and easier to do everything for yourself. We met all sorts of nice people from all over the world, but would never go back to Cancun! The resort is 20 odd km long and comprises of hundreds of hotels with very little else to do in this area, just a few malls and late night clubs. It was handy for the ferry to Isla Mujures (which we visited twice) and Chitchen Itza and Tulum are worth the effort to visit. Take a mix of pesos and us dollars whever you go. Buses etc are cheaper with pesos and some of the ferry prices are based on dollars.
The exit tax has now risen to 785 pesos per person, so if you rep tells you it's 750 don't believe them. We had to borrow the extra from some other travellers due to misinformation, which was very embarrasing.
