“My room was on fire”

I was the spring break staff for students and was staying in the Playa Suites for a 6 week span. I really enjoyed the hotels pool parties, never really had a problem with my room, and food was not amazing but not bad either. I unfortunatly was staying in the tower and FLOOR that the fire was on. The fire alarms never went off and im not going to lie it was a horrible experience that night/day. Other STS staff members and myself were helping kids get out of the hotel until the fire crew arrived (which took a long time because we were in Mexico of course). Word of wisdom.. USE YOUR SAFE when staying in Mexico. During the fire guests had their ipods & phones stolen that weren't in a safe.

Back to the hotel itself however- IF they are even going to allow students to stay here again for spring break 09, there are a couple better hotels that are right around the same price range and have just as good if even better pool parties. I would #1 recommend the Copacabana and then #2 La Palapa. Hopefully this helps aid in planning spring break for 09 but if you need any more info just send me a message and I can answer anything considering I was there the entire spring break last year!

I read some of the reviews of this place after returning form my trip - I must have stayed at a different property!! I agree that the food was so-so, but the drinks and fun never stopped and I was there out of season. The whole place was obviously recently redone (maybe because of the fire that happened in March). The rooms are spacious and the location is awesome in the heart of the action. As a single guy, I do not think you can go wrong at this property!!

Hmmmm...where to start. I'll start off easy on them. The food was absolutely horrid, with the same terrible buffet everyday. The staff is incredibly rude and don't help you out at all. In fact it's almost as if they play stupid with you. I remember asking a waiter if i can get a fork to eat and showed him the hand motions in case he didn't understand english (which he didn't, along with 90% of the rest of the staff), and he just stood there ignoring me for a little bit and after repeating myself numerous times, he said he doesn't know where the forks are, even though he was standing right in front of the kitchen doorway. That's just one example of numerous demonstrating how incompetent and unwilling to help the staff were. The pool is incredibly small for the size of the hotel, not to mention the water is dirty as anything. You could not see to the bottom of it, and its shallow. Absolutely Gross. The bathrooms were in absolute horrible and disgusting shape. The beach is small and the worst i've been to. It is very rocky and they charge you to sit on plastic chairs. I found that to be incredibly pathetic. The ocean water is dark, and not attractive. The elevators would constantly break and get stuck, ALL THE TIME. I had to physically pry the elevator open at one point. The beds are small and uncomfortable. The ONLY positive about this hotel is the view from the balcony, and that's if you get the view. So that was me going easy on the hotel. Now be prepared for the HORROR story. We were sleeping in our room and at about 5:00 AM, my roommate smells smoke, so he goes to investigate. Turns out there was a fire in tower 2, which is where we were staying, on the 8th floor. We had friends staying in the same tower as us, but they were on the 17th floor. NOT ONE SINGLE FIRE ALARM WENT OFF!!! People were woken up by other students kicking down doors. The staff would not do anything, the students did more to help than the staff. Some people had to tie together bed sheets to rappel down to lower floors because of the intense heat and smoke. Our friends on the 17th floor woke to thick smoke and said they couldn't see five feet ahead of them, then they had to run down 17 flights of stairs in these horrible conditions. We had to wait outside the hotel for hours on end before they let us back into the lobby, but they only let people back into the first tower which wasn't the one on fire. The staff would not allow us back up into rooms once the fire was taken care of. Why you ask? Because they were busy looting all of our things. People had their safes opened and had their personal belongings stolen, including money, credit cards, passports, laptops, luggage, phones, cameras, pretty much anything of value. I personally had my cell phone stolen but for some reason they spared my luggage. Again, the worst part about it was that NOT ONE SINGLE FIRE ALARM WENT OFF. The building was BILLOWING with smoke, not one alarm even chirped. Luckily everyone got out safely, although many people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation. One mexican worker died from what i heard before i left. Even after all of this, people were allowed to stay in the other tower, even though the toxic fumes were still in the air and very strong. Now i am sitting here sick with a fever, just came from the emergency room. My throat and lungs are killing me. You can contact me if you'd like about more specific details. All in all, this truly was a trip from hell. If you don't believe me and think i am just bashing this hotel, first of all it made the news so you can search for it on google, secondly you can go and find out for yourselves, but be warned, that is if they aren't shut down, which they definately will be.

  • Liked — Nothing, the view from some of the balconies was good, that's all.
  • Disliked — No fire alarms!

“good hotel”

This was my first trip to Acapulco

The front desk seems like a mexican market, "mercado" a lot of people were checking in-out, it tooks us like 30 minutes to check in. Later we knew that a lot of mexican families with their kids were checking in... school vacations just began.

They gave us a room in the second floor, the A/C was really noise, so we called the front desk to switch room, after 15 minutes waiting they moved us to a room in the 17 floor, the view was wonderful!!! all the Acapulco bay, I really love it.

Food was not so good, there was a mall a few steps away and there is a restaurant called California (buffet style), it was awesome! great food, great prices, great refreshments (you have to try the Naranjada... O M G delicious!!)

As we were all day having found in the beach, we really don t spend time at the hotel

They can impove the staff, the common areas and the building.

“Nice Tropical Hotel, great location”

This hotel was a great choice in Acapulco, and really exceeded my expectations. Our room in this 18 story high-rise, faced the ocean, as did most of the rooms in these well-designed twin towers. The rooms were very clean, brightly decorated, and the beds were very, very comfortable. The air conditioning worked well and was a welcome relief from the 90 degree temperatures. Always hot water in the shower. The pool area was very relaxing, with chaise lounges in both the sun or shade, and easy access to the beach.

We didn't opt for the all-inclusive plan, but the breakfast buffet was included every day. It was great to have breakfast under the palm trees, facing the ocean, there were custom made omlettes, and a variety of choices of rolls, fruits, and prepared dishes. It was very hard for us to leave this place when our 4 days were up. At night, the hotel came alive with (every other night) entertainment among the palm trees, right next to the beach.

The international flavor of the bands seemed to please a diverse crowd, from young to old. Our room was on the 17th floor, and while it provided breathtaking views of the bay, I would have prefered a lower floor. Try to get one between 2nd and 6th.

The location of this hotel was perfect! Right in the middle of the bay, there were many stores, shopping, ATM's, banks, and even a Mall with a cinema complex, just within a few blocks. The 7-11 type stores (XOOX) were everywhere and came in handy. There also was easy access by taxi or bus, to the other parts of the city, the Zocalo and downtown one way, and the Wal Mart area on the opposite end of the bay. The buses proved to be very convienient and safe, and they made change. 40 cents for a non- air conditioned, and 60 cents for an air conditioned ride.

The reception desk in the hotel, was located in an out-of-the-way corner of the lobby, and was rather small, but the line always moved quickly and there was never a delay either at check-in or check-out. The clerks did not speak English very well, but there was never a problem. I was able to book a couple of excursions right at the tour company desk in the lobby. Avoid the Paloe (glass-bottom boat) tour, I feel the area they bring you to is old and past its day. One restaurant tip: La-Fogota restaurant, (Taxi drivers will know) open air restaurant in the busy old-downtown. Excellent Bar-B-Q chicken and french fries, less than $4 a person.

All in all, the Playa Suites hotel is an excellent choice in Acapulco, and I would recommend it to anyone. I would book this hotel again in a heartbeat!
