Despite scary press stories, we’re very glad we came. Acapulco is lovely. It’s been totally relaxing. Pool, beach, perfect weather. We’ve stayed in the tourist areas, have done a lot, and have felt totally safe the entire time.
The press sensationalism—with the resulting destruction of tourism at high season--is such a shame for the local economy; this is very hard on the average worker. I feel like royalty down here. Being almost the only tourists here is like having our own private resort. Last night we were the only patrons at our favorite restaurant in the whole world, Kookaburra’s. Talk about service! As we were again transfixed by the lights surrounding Acapulco bay—in my opinion this is the most beautiful city night time view in the world--I told my husband to pretend that I was Princess Di and that they'd closed the restaurant for the evening to shield me from the paparazzi.
The staff at Villa Vera has been great. We consider them friends. Many of the units are closed, and there’s talk of a major renovation due to start within the next year. Nevertheless, the resort is still nice. An earlier reviewer was angry at a charitable charge on his bill. In our room we found a card describing what the $10 would go toward, and that it was optional. I would have been very happy to pay it, because it seemed quite worthy, but it was not added to our bill.
For your taxi needs we would highly recommend Mario—who’s based at Villa Vera. He really went above and beyond and gave us a fabulous city tour. We’ve used him for all of our transportation, including airport, and once when he had a conflict he’s arranged for his good friend, Rigo, to take care of us. Check for cab # 4601.
We’ve also walked the hill to the Costera a few times and feel very safe in this neighborhood. However, we wouldn’t do it at night given uneven sidewalk, low hanging trees, and steep hill.
