In December 2009 we were visiting relatives in Wick and decided, on the basis of an excellent previous visit, to stay at the Ulbster Arms. The welcome was wonderful, especially as we had struggled with heavy snow blocking all the access routes to get there. The hotel was like a fairytale building - snow on all the surrounding streets and pretty blue lights in nearby trees. The river was almost frozen over but were were most comfortable in a superbly furnished room on the first floor. The large bathroom offered lots of Arran toiletries and heaps of towels. Despite the weather we had a wonderful stay thanks to the Manager and his attentive staff. Perhaps the highlight was the Christmas Dinner to which we invited our family members. The food was excellent with choices for each course and a high quality of ingredients and presentation. After a welcoming sparkling drink we had a four course meal followed by coffee and delicious mince pies. The younger family members even had selection boxes! All was served in style, accompanied by quality wines, and the friendly atmosphere ruled out the reality of the cold outside. We left on 27th December - reluctant to say goodbye to this fine, comfortable and well run hotel. We will come again in a different season!
