“The most memorable Christmas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2010

In December 2009 we were visiting relatives in Wick and decided, on the basis of an excellent previous visit, to stay at the Ulbster Arms. The welcome was wonderful, especially as we had struggled with heavy snow blocking all the access routes to get there. The hotel was like a fairytale building - snow on all the surrounding streets and pretty blue lights in nearby trees. The river was almost frozen over but were were most comfortable in a superbly furnished room on the first floor. The large bathroom offered lots of Arran toiletries and heaps of towels. Despite the weather we had a wonderful stay thanks to the Manager and his attentive staff. Perhaps the highlight was the Christmas Dinner to which we invited our family members. The food was excellent with choices for each course and a high quality of ingredients and presentation. After a welcoming sparkling drink we had a four course meal followed by coffee and delicious mince pies. The younger family members even had selection boxes! All was served in style, accompanied by quality wines, and the friendly atmosphere ruled out the reality of the cold outside. We left on 27th December - reluctant to say goodbye to this fine, comfortable and well run hotel. We will come again in a different season!

“Fantastic Hotel if staying in Thurso Area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2009

I have used this hotel on several occasions when working in the Thurso area and would always rate it very good. The staff are always very welcoming and accomdation and nothing is too much bother. The bedrooms have been refurbished quite recently. It is only a 10 minute drive into the centre of Thurso from the hotel. The back bar has great character and atmosphere with the log fire and great bar food from an extensive menu. Overall good value for money as well both on accommodation and food. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

“Gem of a hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 June 2009

We spent a week travelling round the north Highlands in March 2009. We didn't book stays in advance, and given the time of year, we were trying to stick to nice hotels (aiming for £80-100 per room per night) rather than B&Bs but when we got to Thurso, there was nowhere decent available. Saw an ad in a local mag and took the road to Halkirk crossing our fingers...
But what a treat! Hotel has recently been refurbished and our room had the nicest decor of any hotel room I have ever stayed in.
The room was very spacious and extremely comfortable. We had a lovely view over the bridge and the river out front. The bathroom was fabulous - huge, brand new and very high spec. Lovely Arran Aromatics toiletries too!
Had a meal downstairs in the bar. Bar is more low-key, but the meal was fine (quite plain, but didn't pretend to be anything else!) and a decent price.
The staff seemed to be various older ladies, but they were lovely - friendly and helpful.
We paid something like £85 for the room for one night, B&B. I have stayed in hotels all around Scotland, and if you are looking for somewhere with a genuinely luxurious room at a standard price, you will not get better than this!

“Fantastic food”

Stayed for 3 days on business. Rooms have been nicely refurbished, food was first class and the wine list was also very good. Even though it is a bit out of the way - compared to Thurso - I would highly recommend

“Ulbster Arms Hotel”

I have stayed here on several occasions this year - on both business and pleasure and the place just keeps getting better!!
The rooms and public areas have been refurbished to a very high standard and yet they have retained all of the character one would expect from a Scottish Highlands country hotel, yet they are very affordable. Food is fantastic (all seems to be from Highland suppliers) and staff are friendly and efficient, with local accents. Free wi-fi around the hotel is a recent addition and very useful when emails just don't stop when you might want them to - this now means I take the laptop when going fishing!!
