Hi, before I start, I hope to be very detailed about our trip, and hope the length of the review is helpful, and not overwhelming.
We arrived by shuttle bus -(booked prior to arriving through Majestic Tours) PIHR is the last stop from the airport & we got dropped off after dropping off at about 5 Hotels 1st. There also was a 30 minute wait on the shuttle (very Hot & sweating profusely) at airport & about 45 min drive = a total of an Hour and 15 min to get from airport to hotel. In hindsight I would have just taken a taxi rather than the shuttle bus (I would guess only 30-35 minutes tops!) We arrived and a porter in the lobby greeted my wife and I with a strawberry daiquiri rum drink (Very nice 1st impression!) We checked in and since we booked online (through Priceline), the front desk told us that there would be a charge for energy charge of $16 per day = 80 bucks for our 5 night stay. Which although unexpected, (since Priceline had stated that taxes and fees were included,) it was greatly appreciated that she told us up front that way we could set that money aside (a few less trinket souvenirs that's all lol... we get up to our room and do our inspection (prepared for the worst after reading tons of reviews.) The bathroom was inspected 1st, and everything looked a lot more up-to-date than the reviews would have you to believe. There was some rust around the rim of toilet paper holder and the facets of the door jams, but that to me was to be slightly expected of an older Caribbean Hotel. The ceiling tiles looked slightly stained and old, but again this wasn't a huge turn-off. In the main bed area the floor tiles appeared to be slightly stained with black marks, but nothing overbearing or disgusting, just noticeable. There was a nice chair and armoire, a TV (although the channel buttons were broken off and could only use via remote control (which worked fine our whole stay and really wasn't an issue,) a refrigerator, and even a safe (that allowed you to set the combination code-although it looked to be loosely attached to the wall, so my wife and I decided not to use it. The rest of the room was very much acceptable, without any of the previously mentioned mild dew smell. After check in, we made our way down to Wahoo's to grab some drinks and take in all the scenery. Dwayne was the bartender and he made me a nice stiff Bahama Papa and a Sands beer. Both were good starters and then my wife and I walked around the man made beach (which is nice, but can definitely use some cleaning as there were rocks and other debris that made walking barefoot slightly uncomfortable. The harbor bridge was nice, although it looks a little shabby at first glance. The lagoon was really a mess. The 2 large island floats (blue and green) were algae covered, and had drifted to the shoreline and were toppled over. The water near the shoreline had a thick murky seaweed/trash filled layer floating atop it, and you could visible see trash strewn throughout the lagoon. Despite all of this I still attempted to snorkel there, and had minimal success (I snatched a conch to show my wife (and put it back) and caught a few pics of a few species of fish. There were about 6-8 baby barracuda in the lagoon which was cool, and at night you could see large fish by the spot lights hanging off the bridge over the water. We finished the night having drinks at Spinnaker's until 1 a.m. The next day we ate breakfast in the buffet, and it was AWESOME!!! Ready to order Omelets with a variety of added ingredients (i.e. sweet peppers, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, etc..., a Belgian Waffle Maker, Buffet Sausage, Bacon, Fish (usually) Grits, potatoes, Cream of Wheat, fresh fruit, and salad bar. Drinks were soft drinks, or juices (orange, cranberry, apple, pineapple, etc...) Breakfast here IS AWESOME!!! After breakfast we walked to Cabbage beach (~ 15 minute nice, leisurely walk). We stopped along the way to feed the turtles, birds, and fish at a little pond alongside the left of the road which was nice (bring bread-I grabbed a few rolls from breakfast buffet.) Cabbage Beach is absolutely beautiful!!! There is a small sign designating the entrance to the right of the road, (direction headed to RIU) and if you blink, you can miss it. lol Also, the public path is a steep grade down onto the beach, and this in turn turns into a hike getting of the beach (with wet sand covered feet this can be a little challenging). But the beach has an open air message tent (~ $60 for an hour, very relaxing) They also rent Banana Boats, Jet ski's, and Parasailing (didn't do any, but it looked like fun!) Also, beach is very exposed (no trees for shade), but you can buy an umbrella and chair (1 chair for $10/ 2 for $15 was our price.) We hung out at the beach all day (literally-Oh yea, bring LOTS OF SUN SCREEN), and went back for the dinner buffet at the Hotel around 6:30 p.m. Dinner was good (Menu is posted out in the hall on board across from entrance to Captain's Table. After dinner, there were more stiff drinks to be had at both Wahoo's and later in the night (~ 11 p.m. @ Spinnaker's.) There was a band in the lobby tonight (a 3 man crew- Guitar, keyboard and drums/singer) It was decent entertainment. We went to bed about midnight. Monday, we woke up, got dressed, and waited in the lobby for our pick-up to go do the Horse Ride on the beach with Happy Trails Stables. This was a Wonderful adventure & Highly Recommended for first timers like me (Expensive, but soooooo WORTH It!) They offer daily tours (although they are closed on Sunday.) The tour includes over an hour of riding in one of the more remote areas of the island with pristine beautiful beaches! The price also covers the complimentary bus ride from your hotel to the stables and back. The bus ride takes you across the island to Coral Harbor, located at the south-western part of the Island (New Providence.) You will have a chance to see many different parts of the island on the way. Once you arrive at the stables, the staff mounts you on your horse and gives you some brief instructions (Mainly Heel down, posture straight, and how to hold the reigns! HAHAHA) on basic riding (English riding, not Western LOL). You will then set off on a leisurely, guided tour through the woods and onto the beach for about an hour. -Note: our guide was Duke- Who can be a pain at times barking directions to you the entire tour (it kind of takes away from the whole ambiance and experience just a little,) but just remind yourself as I did, that the horses are large beastly animals, and if it’s your first time like mine, the last thing you want is to have a runaway spooked horse on your hands. So... as much as it might suck to keep hearing the same commands barked at you, just try to listen and more than anything enjoy yourself, after all you paid for this, and it truly is an unforgettable experience! Oh yea, all rides are by reservation only. Here is the website for more info. http://www.bahamahorse.com/index.php
After the horse ride, we went back to the hotel and had a late lunch at Wahoo's. (I had the blackened fish sandwich (GREAT!!) and the Philly cheese steak (Also very good) my wife had the chicken sandwich which looked good as well. We then ventured over to the Atlantis for the evening to see the Dig (Which is free and open to the Public after 6:30 I think -we went at ~ 7) It was amazing and we even toured the grounds, and saw their "Predator tank" Full of sharks, and large fish! They also have a sting ray pool which was neat. We went inside and finished our visit off by donating $150 to the Atlantis via their slot machines in the Casino (Which is also gorgeous-very Vegas vibe!) We left Atlantis ~10:15, and since THE HOTEL STOPS SELLING FOOD @ 10 P.M., we opted to walk over the bridge into Nassau and attempt to find something to eat in Potter's Cay (directly at the base of the bridge, the one taking traffic back to Nassau) I got a very good Snapper, rice & peas, and Macaroni dinner for 14 bucks! We walked back, got a few drinks from Spinnaker’s in the Hotel Lobby, and sat outside to enjoy! Once we came back in ~ 11:30, there was a limbo show wrapping up in the lobby which was very cool and interesting to watch (he even grabbed 2 American tourist out of the audience to participate!) The next day we did the Stuart Cove SUB Bahamas experience, and it was a blast!!! We even got a two for one, because they had booked more people than they had subs onboard so we got to snorkel while the first group did the sub for about 30 minutes (Which was so awesome!!! -bring fish food you won't be let down by the variety or amount of fish!) we did the SUB once our turn came, and for my wife who can't swim it was a little terrifying at first, but they assisted her in every way, and I don't even think she ever got her hair wet WOW! We wrapped up to SUB adventure did a boat transfer and took one of their POWER Boats back WOW!!!! Talk about major air! We were racing through the water with saltwater splashing you in the face, feeling the wind and the warm air, it felt like I was in an action movie at one point, it was completely thrilling! We finished, and got dropped back off @ our hotel (LAST AGAIN OF COURSE DUE TO OUR LOCATION-really the only true downer of staying on Paradise Island) We went to the Atlantis again that evening to make yet another donation HAHAHA (This time only $100,) and went back to hotel for buffet dinner and MORE DRINKS!!! Called it a night about 2 a.m. The next morning, we took a Majestic City and Country tour with lunch at 10 a.m. The tour guide dropped us at the zoo for ~40 min, and we rushed to try and see all the exhibits plus the Flamingo march, but it was a neat experience (Oh yea, do the lorikeet feed if you can, it was neat too, my wife really enjoyed it.) We then toured Fort Charlotte, which was interesting if you are into History at all like me. We then coursed our way through downtown (Actually saw the Prime Minister w/ his body guards doing an interview which was neat,) and saw the Queen's staircase (very steep-a lot deeper than I expected.) We then had lunch on the far east end of New Providence Island which was nice (I had grouper fingers Cole slaw and fries, and my wife had a HUGE chicken sandwich and fries. with tea and water to drink. (And thankfully the restaurant was air conditioned because the weather topped 95 degrees that day!) We concluded our tour, and the shuttle dropped us off at our hotel and we enjoyed a little R&R. That evening we went down to the lobby for our scheduled Majestic Lady Dinner Cruise with Majestic Tours, but the pick-up shuttle never came to our hotel for pick-up (which was confirmed by 4 other couples, one which had been waiting in the lobby 20 min. before pick-up time), so we wasted an hour waiting to see what would happen, then simply decided to grab dinner @ the buffet (which I'm sure wouldn't have compared to dinner cruising at sea :(, but oh well) After Dinner, we walked over to the Atlantis property one more time (as it is soooo beautiful over there), and where fortunate enough to catch what seemed like a rush-out or practice Junkanoo. There where costumes, the band blaring, and a real festive atmosphere! We got some great pics, and danced our little hearts away. We went afterwards to Ben & Jerry's for some ice cream to pacify our aching hearts at the fact that we would be leaving this Paradise come morning. We went back to PIHR and I lounged outside by the pool. The next morning we were on our way to the airport and feeling a little sad to see the palm trees disappear through the shuttle windows as we knew we were leaving paradise behind. (Oh yea another Majestic Shuttle note: They packed 13 people in a van that had 4 people per row (really 3 people per row would be slightly uncomfortable, so I'll leave the rest to your imagination-LOL) Final thought on the Shuttle= JUST GET A CAB! lol... GREAT TRIP, and I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE REVIEW. QUESTIONS, just ask away!
