Upon arrival at the Sheraton, there were only about two parties ahead of me in line for check-in, however there were only two desk clerks and it took them forever to take care of customers. I finally got up to the counter and was being assisted by the Assistant Manager, who proceeded to start checking me in, but she wasn't even signed onto the computer system so she was passing my information to the clerk next to her who was already handling another customer. I was informed that my room would not be ready until about 3pm. It was just before noon when I checked in. So I checked my bags with the bell service, and went to get lunch. The food in the Bimini Market was tasteless and overpriced; they only do buffet style service and it was $28 for lunch for one person, and breakfast is about $22 per person and about $28-30 per person for dinner, maybe a bit more. After taking a tour of the grounds, stopping by the casino, and booking a spa appointment for myself, I went back up to the front desk to check on my room, as it was just about 3pm. After waiting on a long line as they still only had two people working the front desk, I was told that the room was ready, but there were no linens on the bed yet. So I had to wait around another half hour before getting back on line and finally getting my room key. At almost 4pm, I arrived on the 4th floor. My room number was 437. The hallway was narrow, (you literally have to move aside for someone else to walk past you), and there was only one way in and out, which was down this long, narrow hallway. I had to make my way all the way to the end of the hallway to get to my room as there was no cut-thru or anything to bypass the walk. I got to my room and decided to take a shower, and I find there are no towels in the room. I called guest services, and they said they would send some up, which took them over an hour to do.
The walls in the hotel are pretty thin, so if you plan on doing anything in your room that you don't want others to hear, I suggest you do it quietly, as I had the privledge of hearing not one but two different couples getting busy during the wee hours. And the doors to the rooms tend to slam shut and it can be very loud and annoying, especially during the night.
There is a cafe in the hotel that serves wraps, breakfast sandwiches, etc., but it is very expensive, and the only other sit down restaurant in the hotel is the Amici, which is only open for dinner starting at 6pm and you need to make a reservation. I ordered room service once and got ice cream with my meal and the ice cream had definitely been sitting in the freezer too long as it was completely freezer burnt, yet they charged me $8 for ice cream.
The hotel itself was clean, but the hallways to the guest rooms were in need of some TLC, as there was a lot of peeling paint and marks on the walls from being hit by bags and housekeeping carts since the hallways are so narrow.
I did notice that shortly after my arrival, I received a call on my cell phone from a telephone number listed in The Bahamas. I didn't answer it, but when I got to my room I Googled the number at it was to a watersports service that had a desk inside the hotel lobby. I never went to the desk and never gave anyone my cell phone number. The only time I gave my number was when I booked the trip, which means that the hotel must have provided it to this third party without my permission.
The one bright spot of the vacation was the bellmen. They were friendly, helpful, and I got some great advice on where to go for dinner and where to go shopping for souvenirs. You must try the Fish Fry, which is an area that has multiple restaurants with local cuisine. I ate at Frankie Gone Bananas down at the Fish Fry, and the service was good and the food was also delightful. I also ate at The Poop Deck (don't laugh at the name). It's a bit pricy, but the atmosphere and the service is wonderful and the food is fantastic. Both restaurants were recommended by the bellmen and I was more than satisfied.
Overall, the rooms were clean, the staff was pleasant, but some of the service lacked and the food inside the hotel wasn't good at all.
