THE GOOD: Location on the beach was amazing. Outdoor/pool areas amazing. Lounge/lobby areas amazing. Rooms/shower, great. Service great.
THE NOT-SO-GOOD: Food was average at best, and VERY high priced. In my opinion, bed/pillows were uncomforatble. Long walk to room from only working elevator. Only wired internet in rooms.
My wife and I stayed 4 nights at the Sheraton this past January 27-31. After reading the many reviews on this site, I tried to pay attention to everything to give an honest critique. I'll start at the begining.
US$ used interchangebly throught the island with Bahamian $. Very easy.
Cab ride to the hotel was fun, $19.
Check in was smooth, not a long wait at all. We never waited at the front desk more than a couple minutes. Man at the desk was very friendly and knowledgeable. Asked for upgrade, but did not receive one, offered one for a price, but we declined. We ended up on the fifth floor, 'Resort View' room 575. The entrance and lobby were immaculate. Very modern and updated and clean. All the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful.
Our room was on the West side, 5th floor, 'resort view'. Glad we didn't pay for the upgrade, because we had an AMAZING view from our 'small' balcony. We looked over the neighboring complex, but also had a clear view of the beach and ocean. The room itself was very clean, updated and modern. A good selection of TV channels. Plenty of storage, and easy safe in room. Bathroom was great, well stocked and shower had great hot water and water pressure. The bed was pretty uncomfortable. Supposedly a 'sweet sleeper' maybe I'm just spoiled coming from a Tempurpedic at home, but it was not good, and the pillows were incredibly soft and flat. It was very quiet and we were seldomly able to hear things from other rooms or the hallway. The curtains did not adequtely close out the sunlight however, and I like to sleep in the dark.
The pool area was amazing. 3 large pools, only 1 heated though, which was a bummer because the water was quite chilly. The center pool was heated and had a swim up bar that served expensive drinks. Two large hot tubs were great. Plenty of room at all times, sometimes we had it to ourselves. Also had beach volleyball, ping pong, basketball hoop, checkers. The beach was awesome. Soft white sand, not crowded, tons of chairs, never had to wait a second. They also offered beach activities like kayaking, snorkeling gear, water bikes, etc that you could reserve, but we never took advantage of that. The pool staff we great as well. One thing that turned us off was the salespeople on the beach, They always keep interrupting your relaxing time wanting to sell you dresses, coconut drinks, jewelry, singing you up from 'free' offers that you end up haivng to sit through a time-share presentation or something. Just tell them no thank you or don't make eye contact and they usually move on.
The food. The food was our biggest dissapointment. We did not do the all-inclusive option, and after reading the reviews, we tried to be prepared for expensive food, which would have been fine, except for 2 things. 1) it wasn't very good. 2) there wasn't much else close off-resort to enjoy. First, I understand everything is more expensive in the Bahamas. Fine, I get it, it's all good, but the resort food was A LOT more expensive than the local places. First late lunch we arrived was $46 for a turkey wrap, cheeseburger and 1 iced tea. and it wasn't very good food or rpesentation. Dinner was a "snack" via room service for $35 for 1 quesidillas and 1 slice cheesecake. Again, mediocre at best. Finally, after dropping I think, $49 on 2 breakfast buffets, where things were mostly cooled off, and not good, we decided to find a market. There is a City Market about 2 miles down the road. $1.25 bus trip, or about 20 minute walk. For $43 we got enough food for all the rest of our breakfasts and lunches. BUT, we had to request a refrigerator for our room at $10/day. We still came out way ahead, and the food was good. 1 of 2 things needs to happen with their food situation. 1) the prices need to come down a lot, or 2) the quality of the food needs to come way up. I don't mind paying top dollar if the food is worth it.
The location of resort in relation to the rest of the town and other activities outside of the resort was a little lacking. If you want to leave the resort, there isn't much to do within walking distance. There is a Burger King, Subway, Domino's Pizza(which delivers to the hotel) Sbarros Pizza, a greek place and an italian place, in what I would consider walking distance, but no fun entertainment type places. There is a daquiri shack just across the road from the resort which was awesome. Lots of fresh fruit options for $6, verse $9 at the resort. There is also a bus stop, the #10 jitney they call it, that runs West Bay St from start to finish. You can ride for $1.25 one way. Highly reccomend this. Super easy, will make change for you, you pay when you get off, many many stops to choose from along the way.
A few other tid bits.
Free high speed internet at the hotel with a catch. Only wireless in the lobby and pool area, and only wired internet in the rooms.
The connected casino was a joke. It must still look like the day it opened. Straight out fo the 80s. It connects the Sheraton to the Wyndham (BTW: the Sheraton was MUCH nicer, at least the public areas, than the Wyndham) The only reason we went to the casino was for the supposedly cheap drinks. But we'll never know, cause we couldn't get anyone to serve us, so we left.
The elevator situation you read som much about here is pretty much true. 1 working elevator for each side of the hotel. if you're toward the end of one of the wings, you're in for a hike. better views down that fire, but it's a pretty long walk that you get tired of quickly, especilly if you're at the pool and forgot something in your room, or by day 5 you've had it.
I went with my wife, no kids, and had a great relaxing time. There were mostly coules there, but quite a few familes and guy/girl groups. It seemed very family friendly, and I would bring my family here, but it wasn't overly kid focused where the adults were annoyed or put out.
We got a great package deal, along with the beach location is why we chose this resort. We would definitely stay in the Bahamas again, but might consider a different resort if the price was right.
Room Tip: higher floors have much better view. try for close to the elevator.
