I just returned from St. Croix and had a great time. Coakley Bay Condos are a great choice if you need more than a motel room and want a nice pool and great Caribbean views. I am not sure what the prevous reviewer was expecting-- the name of the place is "Coakley Bay Condominiums" amd yet they criticized the place as being condos!
The buidings are all oriented towards the water up a steep hillside. The further up you go, the view is somewhat better but then you are a climb away from the pool and a very nice poolside restaurant called the Cultured Pelican (excellent Italian and Pizza). I would recommend the upper units in the lower buidling to get a good view and easy access to the pool. The pool by the way was very clean, a good size and had a great view of Buck Island and the sea.
The units vary as they are condos but in general the place is well maintained but just like most places in the Caribbean, if you are expecting a pristine Maui or Ritz experience you will be dissappointed. If you can look past the occassional rust stains on the buildings (so common on the islands due to the salt spray that constantly corrodes everything in Paradise) you will find Coakely to be convenient to a number of nice beaches (Buchaneer, Grapetree, Jack's Bay) and lots of great resturaunts (Cheesburgers, Duggins, Rumrunners all within 10-15 minutes and the great Just-In-Case Deli at the Reef) and has terrific views of the blue waters and Buck Isand.
Another nice aspect of the location is that it is in the East End which is the wealthier and more sparcely settled side of the island so if you are not comfortable with dense populations and areas of mixed economic conditions, you will likely be happier here than center island or the west side. I will add that this was my second trip to STX and by and large the entire island was beautiful, the people very friendly and even though I was alone, I never felt unsafe or unwelcome. Like most places, if you are nice and courteous, you will be treated in kind.
Sum up--- know what to expect when you are in the Caribbean, go out and explore and come back to a very decent place to stay at Coakely Bay (sounds like a jingle ;)
