“Know what to expect and you'll enjoy it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2009

Overall - you will rent a condo in an apartment complex (not a hotel, or timeshare, but a generic residential place). The complex is well maintained, with a clean pool, nice landscaping, and no beach access to speak off (there is a snorkeling beach across the road). Since it is a residential complex, each condo is individually owned and therefore the in-room amenities/appliance/bedding/etc will vary. The car is a necessity in order to get to all the beautiful beaches on St Croix, many restaurants, etc.

Check In: there is none to speak off. We went directly to our unit (it was unlocked, with the keys on the dinette table).

Our Room: We had top floor, 3 bedroom/2bath apartment with full kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, paper towels, other many extras) and a very well stocked linen closet (plenty of towels, extra bedding, etc). The view was amazing! Big windows in the living room and the master and a balcony with 2 lounge chairs overlooking the pool and Buck Island. The A/C was needed intermittently - the sea breeze was more than enough to keep the room cool.

Restaurant/Cultured Pelican: We are from a big city, so are used to good quality restaurants. We ate at Pelican (Italian) on our first night - wasn't too memorable and too expensive for the quality of food. skip it - there are many much better places around.

Service: none; there is no maid service; no mid-week cleaning or concierge; you are on your own.

Location: The condo is located on the east side of the island, somewhat remotely, but you could easily drive to many places: Christiansted - 15 min ; Buccaneer - 5 min; Casino - 15 min. In order to reach any restaurants, attractions, beaches, you must have a car (or use taxi).

Other: you should be prepared to know where to go in terms of attractions; which restaurants to eat in and make your own reservations; clean your room, make your bed, dry the beach towels, etc - as there is no concierge or maid service. If you are aware of what you are getting, you will have a great stay. We enjoyed ours! Happy traveling.

“I WOULD go back!”

I just returned from St. Croix and had a great time. Coakley Bay Condos are a great choice if you need more than a motel room and want a nice pool and great Caribbean views. I am not sure what the prevous reviewer was expecting-- the name of the place is "Coakley Bay Condominiums" amd yet they criticized the place as being condos!

The buidings are all oriented towards the water up a steep hillside. The further up you go, the view is somewhat better but then you are a climb away from the pool and a very nice poolside restaurant called the Cultured Pelican (excellent Italian and Pizza). I would recommend the upper units in the lower buidling to get a good view and easy access to the pool. The pool by the way was very clean, a good size and had a great view of Buck Island and the sea.

The units vary as they are condos but in general the place is well maintained but just like most places in the Caribbean, if you are expecting a pristine Maui or Ritz experience you will be dissappointed. If you can look past the occassional rust stains on the buildings (so common on the islands due to the salt spray that constantly corrodes everything in Paradise) you will find Coakely to be convenient to a number of nice beaches (Buchaneer, Grapetree, Jack's Bay) and lots of great resturaunts (Cheesburgers, Duggins, Rumrunners all within 10-15 minutes and the great Just-In-Case Deli at the Reef) and has terrific views of the blue waters and Buck Isand.

Another nice aspect of the location is that it is in the East End which is the wealthier and more sparcely settled side of the island so if you are not comfortable with dense populations and areas of mixed economic conditions, you will likely be happier here than center island or the west side. I will add that this was my second trip to STX and by and large the entire island was beautiful, the people very friendly and even though I was alone, I never felt unsafe or unwelcome. Like most places, if you are nice and courteous, you will be treated in kind.

Sum up--- know what to expect when you are in the Caribbean, go out and explore and come back to a very decent place to stay at Coakely Bay (sounds like a jingle ;)

I spent a week at Coakely bay...they are condos! This is not a hotel..you might as well be at home ! We could hear the people in the next unit at all hours..they weren't exactly happy with each other from the sounds of their voices. St. Croix is beautiful and a great place to get away from it all...just don't go to Coakley Bay! when you're there go out to eat at Duggan's or Tutto Benne's... the beaches are pretty..but find a better place to stay than this! I expect a clean, quiet, place with a nice pool and beach...this just wasn't what I expected.

“So Great we're buying on St. Croix !!”

Stayed there twice (2004 and 2006). We rented for a week from private owners both times. We had so much fun, we're buying a place at Coakley Bay. The views are the best I've seen anywhere--North to Buck Island and West to Christiansted. The restaurant is really nice too. Pool has a super view and is big!

“AWESOME place to stay!”

My friends and I stayed at Coakly Bay Condos for the Christmas break and we absolutley loved it. The condo was very clean and furnished well. The views from our balcony were just spectacular. Even though we stay in the N building which didnt have a view of Buck Island. We still got a great hill-top view of green cay and other estates, and of course the OCEAN! If you want a buck island view, stay in anyother building other than N. The pool and resturant were just fabulous. The Cultured Pelican serves very good food. Food quality, presentation, and the ambiance of the resturant is nice. The staff is VERY nice as well. The pool has great views of the ocean and Buck Island. Theres no lifeguard on duty so if you have kids, make sure there are being watched. The pool is clean and is pretty big wide with the deepest being 7ft. The beach is on the other side of East End rd. you walk down about 100 ft and then take the little dirt path through the woods. The beach is probably the only part i didnt care for much. Theres rocks and its not very clear. Not really good for snorkling . BUT you can walk either way left or right on the beach down and theres good water to swim and snorkle.

All in all for the cheap price we payed, the quality of the condo, the AWESOME views, nice staff, the pool and resturant it was definitly worth it. I would reccommend Coakly Bay to anybody looking for a great place to stay for thier CRUZAN vacation. I had a blast and so will you.
