We chose VOG for 2 reasons: Location and budget. We were coming to Grand Cayman for 10 days and would spend the first 4 days on 7 mile beach before renting a car and heading over to the north side for a week. Because we wouldn't have a vehicle during our stay here it was very important to be centrally located and because we splurged on a house on the north side we needed to find a condo on 7mb that wouldn't break the bank. VOG seemed to fit the bill and it did, for the most part.
First, the upsides: Lisa, the manager, was willing to negotiate with us on the rate and as a result we got a very nice discount on our 2 bd/2ba oceanview. The interior of the condo itself was nicer than I had imagined (based on pictures that I had seen online that had concerned me). The decor was cute island casual (for lack of a better description), the furnishings were clean and in very good condition, and there were 2 dining areas with large enough tables to accomodate 6 comfortably in each. The beach was very pretty with a fair amount of lounge chairs and a few tables scattered about. The location was within walking proximity to a large market and a number of decent restaurants (we were particularly surprised by how much we enjoyed Sunshine Grill at the Sunshine Suites for a casual, islandy atmosphere with good food).
Now, the downsides: The condo was not properly cleaned when we first arrived: toilets needed more attention, kitchen counter had crumbs on and around it and there was dirt and debris on the floor throughout the condo. After speaking to the manager, she sent over the same housekeeper who had originally cleaned, to rectify the situation. The housekeeper came by with one small hand towel to clean with and one little mop (no cleaners, dust pan, etc...). We went off to the beach and when we returned not only did it look as if nothing had been done but someone had peed in the guest toilet (not us!)and not even bothered to flush it! Roll away beds had been delivered and the housekeeper hadn't even bothered to make them. When I told the manager she seemed genuinely upset and sent over a different housekeeper the next day who did a very thorough job. Still, it was not a very good first impression and caused us some frustration right off the bat.
Our ground floor condo had 2 patios: one outside the living room and one outside the master bedroom. Both were relatively small and open to the grassy common area and not very private so we didn't really spend any time there.
The location was good but not great. There are a few decent restaurants within walking distance, but a lot of the ones that were highly recommended to us were too far to walk to with young children (we had 2 with us) or could only be reached by car (which we only rented later on in our trip). Also, to get to the restaurants nearby (Eats, etc) you have to cross a very busy road and there are no crosswalks or traffic lights there so we had to make a run for it most times. The supermarket was a few minutes walk, but on the side of that same very busy road and not pleasant for lugging grocery bags back. The beach was very nice and empty, but I didn't like the feeling of being sandwiched between the Westin and the Ritz and their crowded beaches on either side.
All in all, our stay at VOG was pleasant and a good value considering the outrageously high rates of the other properties in the same area.
