This year my wife and I chose San Juan, Puerto rico to celebrate our 18th year anniversary. We arrived on time to San Juan on May 25, 2014 and were staying for the week. When we arrived to the Sandy Beach Hotel (Condado) we met Evel at the front desk she was pleasant, courteous, and professional. Once we announced to her that it was our first time visiting San Juan and our anniversary, she immediately checked to see if she could upgrade our room from what was assigned to us we were thankful that it worked out. Other staff that made our Puerto Rico experience enjoyable and memorable was Rafael the nite manager. He was always willing to asist us in locations for dinner and San Juan night life all while being couteous and professional. The room was nice and comfortable and newly upgraded we have no complaints. The hotels location is good for the beach lover. Restaurants and shopping are in walking distance. We would recommend this hotel to our friends and would definitely return in the future.

Room tip: In the hotel there are only two rooms that have king beds. That was a bummerbut we made it work.

I booked the Sandy Beach Hotel for one night prior to a 7 day cruise. We were arriving late Saturday night and just needed someplace to spend the night. I was a little worried about this place after some of the reviews I read, but I didn't want to pay $200 for one night. I booked the hotel through the hotels website. I listed that there would be 4 of us in one room. When we arrived, the desk clerk told us he was only planning on there being two of us and had us booked in a two twin bed room. Luckily, he was able to find us a room with two doubles.

The hotel elevator will barely fit 4 persons and their luggage. We mainly used the stairs when we didn't have our luggage. There are several cafes and clubs within walking distance, so we had a late dinner outside on the patio at one of them. It was very lively in this part of town and we had fun walking through the area and walking along the beach. There were so many people around, probably since it was Saturday night, that we felt perfectly safe. It was fun being so close to the night life and the beach.

The room was small and dated, but it was clean, as was the bathroom. The beds were fine. The air conditioner was mounted on the wall right above where I slept, so I was fine, but the room did get a bit hot and stuffy during the night. The breakfast was outside on the patio, and was pretty basic, cereal, muffins, juice and coffee. But it was fine for what we needed.

If you just want someplace to sleep for half the price of everything else in San Juan, this is the place to stay. If you want a nice 4 star hotel for a lot more money, this is not the place for you. I would definitely stay here again if I ever need a cheap place to stay in Puerto Rico.

For the price it cant be beat ! Typical Mid Grade Spanish/Caribbean Hotel . Cold A/C , Free Continental Breakfast, English TV, Flat Screens, Nothing fancy, but clean, safe, comfortable, and friendly for sure ! Literally 5 feet from the sand of Condado Beach. There is a Walgreen's 50 feet away with a grocery store and pharmacy, wal-mart is 5 blocks away, there is a million restaurants, souvenir shops, Casinos, Bars, and attractions all around the hotel in every direction. There is a bus stop 50 feet from the hotel. 75 cents will take you anywhere . The 21 & 53 bus run through all the tourist zones from in a loop through Isla Verde, Ocean Park, Condado, and Old San Juan all day until 9pm. Once in Old San Juan there is a free trolly that runs all thru the area.
Perhaps if traveling with small children you may need to rent a car, but for us it would be a major inconvenience, and waste of money. There is NO WHERE to park free and you will pay minimum of $10 per parking spot per 8 hours not to mention the traffic/drivers is suicidal to me modest. The Taxis are also a rip off ALL of them will try to rip you off. They will tell you $20 for a ride that should be $2.50 according to the meter rates posted on the cab. If you ask them to turn on the meter they will refuse and kick you out of the cab. If you fall into the trap they will threaten you with the corrupt police if you refuse to pay the inflated fare. The only time you should EVER take a taxi is too and from the airport. It's regulated by the government $15 + $1 each bag.

If you're looking for authentic food and atmosphere get the hell out of the hotel zones and head to old town. The Bus and Taxis all drop off in the same general area at the bottom of the hill. Old town is like a 10x10 block historic city situated on a hill. The further up the hill you get the more authentic & reasonably priced it gets.. If you are at the top of the hill and can see a small old picturesque coastal community down some stairs from the main area going to the beach DON'T GO DOWN THE STAIRS AND STAY OUT !!! This is The most notoriously dangerous barrio in all of the Caribbean ! It's called LA PERLA and dumb tourists get mugged and beat half to death there daily. There is no warning signs and looks old and historic like the rest of old town, but trust me don't go there if you're not from there ! If you are intentionally going to LA PERLA as a destination then it's only for one thing and that's drugs. If that's the case talk to the old English speaking lady at the top of the stairs at the picnic area during daylight hours and she will run in for you for a tip. Also don't ever talk to the hustlers around the Walgreen's they're all junkies.

Puerto Rico in general is not a inexpensive Caribbean destination. Everything is just as much usually more than in the states or europe, but if you do a little homework and play your cards right it can be perfect especially with the perfect location of the Sandy beach Hotel.

I'm a very experienced traveler, and PR was my last destination in the Caribbean I had yet to visit, and it's to date in the top 5 =)

For us Sandy Beach Hotel was exactly what we were looking for and is a excellent find, but if you're looking for the hilton stay at the hilton ! Don't stay at a budget hotel and then bash it for being exactly what it says it is. If you want the royal treatment go pay for it !

This hotel is in a great location. Just steps to the beautiful beach. It is however quite a run down hotel. There wasn't any hot water in our room and 2 twin beds, when I booked a queen and no telephone. It is also located beside a very noisy bar and the music was loud all night. Kept the AC on all night to drown out the noise. The walls are very thin and you could hear people going down the hall and beside you. If location is all your after then this hotel is great. I wouldn't want to spend more than one night here. It was ok for our stay after the cruise before catching an early flight.

Less than 100 yards from everything..24hr nice restaurant, 24hr Wallgreens, the ocean with huge beach, plenty Bars for any taste..Taxi gathering spot is right in front of the Hotels entrance.
Parking is around back also less than 100 yards at $10.00 a night, or there's another across the street from Sandy Beach that belongs to the Mariot Hotel next door at about $18.00 a night.
Rooms are OK for the price and I would love to stay there again my next time in San Juan.
It's a humble but perfectly located place.
I would give it 5 stars for location.

Room tip: 107 was fine.
