“Hidden Little Gem”

Mikuzi in Fairy Hill, Portland, is a small property adjacent to the main road. It's lush and green and has several little cottages you can rent, some are just a small rooms, others are larger...it depends on what your needs are. The property itself is very well kept and has an artsy feel to it. We spent 3 nights here, the first in a one-room cabin with private bath, the next two in a comfortable cabin with a good-size bedroom, private kitchen and private bathroom with hot and cold water. There are books for your enjoyment and a radio/cd player you can use. There's also a tv, but only one station came in and even that one station was very grainy. In the garden, there's a BBQ pit where guests can grill their own meals, if they choose to. Steve, who oversees the property, is very professional and will take very good care of you...he tries to make everyone's stay very enjoyable, he's the one to ask if you have any questions regarding the area, or how to take a taxi, etc. The beach, Winnifred Beach, is about a 15 minute stroll away...if you take the shortcut. If you don't take the shortcut and take the road instead, it takes about half an hour to get there. We usually take the shortcut, just be careful if it's been raining, because then it can be slippery. Winnifred is a BEAUTIFUL beach. The locals there are very friendly, and you can buy meals for very reasonable prices...may I suggest Cynthia and Painter's restaurant for some good fish! There's also Yvonne, a nice lady who sells jewelry, etc., and there are other restaurants and food stands, as well as stands that sell juices and other drinks. Entry to the beach is free, but it's always nice to contribute to the local community by purchasing a meal, or a drink. The beach itself is well kept and the water's always calm due to a reef that's not too far from the shore. There are many trees, so finding shade is no problem. Off to the right side, there's a fresh water river that flows into the sea. Winnifred does have "changing facilities", but they're old and in dire need of upgrading. Don't let this deter you from enjoying this beach though...it's one of my very favorite beaches in Jamaica, and I know most of them. Mikuzi is in a great location, being that you don't need a taxi to get to the beach, and it's located in a very peaceful, lovely area, away from the tourist hustle and bustle. We truly enjoyed our stay and will definitely return! Oh, let me not forget to mention "Marley"...he's a cute little kitty that lives on the premises and loves anyone who pets him.

“Will stay again”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2011

I think what I liked most about Mikuzi is the fact that it is a 10-15 minute walk from the best beach in the Portland area. This was my third time back to Portland and the other two times I stayed at Great Huts. What no one mentions about Great Huts is that the sleep quality is quite poor at that resort because you can hear the music from the dance hall a couple of times a week until 3 or 4am...Once I heard the music until 5am when I stayed at Great Huts. There is a dance hall up the street from Mikuzi, but the music ended at 1 or 2am and it happened only once during the week I was there....Maybe I got lucky, but I think Fairy Hill is a little quiter than Boston Bay (where Great Huts is located).
So, if you are ok with cold showers (Mikuzi does not have hot water), I highly recommend Mikuzi.
I agree with all the other comments about Steve...He is a wonderful soul and went out of his way to make sure I was happy.

“Mikuzi - BEST place in Port Antonio!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 May 2011

Steve will go out of his way to make sure you have what you need. His love for this place, which he built with his family, is definitely made known by how much he puts in to his guests, and the landscape that surrounds. The plants are amazing, the rooms are clean, and lucky you if you get a visit from the kitty, who seems to have selected Mikuzi as her spot. I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

“A very special place, a REAL Jamaican experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2011

Mikuzi is a unique destination for people who want to experience a slice of REAL Jamaica. This is not a resort, not even a hotel, really. It's a small group of cute cottages, tucked into a hillside, on the edge of a small village called Fairy Hill.
Steve, the manager, is a wonderful man, a great local who will walk you into the village to get dinner at the small, simple restaurant along the side of the road (great fried chicken!)
This is definitely a place for the slightly adventurous, the traveler as opposed to the tourist. We felt completely safe here, less than 100 feet from a lively church and a collection of small tin-roofed bars playing great reggae and serving cheap beer and rum drinks. Stop by for a drink with the locals at night and you will dance and laugh like a local. You will probably be the only tourists there.
Ten minutes down the hill is the ridiculously pretty Winnifred Beach, where you will also probably be the only tourists all day, sipping Red Stripe, napping in the shade and snorkeling. Heaven.
This quiet corner of Jamaica has The Blue Lagoon (from the movie,) waterfalls, more quiet beaches, and generally has a lost in time feel that is peaceful and gorgeous.
Oh and Boston Bay, the HOME of jerk chicken, is 5 minutes away and is killer!
For the money (I mean really...it is cheap!) Mikuzi is a gem, an absolute delight. I'll be back as soon as possible!

“Mikuzi: Cosy nest with the right beat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2011

Mikuzi made me feel very welcome. Steve who runs the place with heart, is extremely kind and genuine.
Rooms with nice decor surrounded with a beautyful garden. Its like a little peaceful nest where from you can go to explore the safe and friendly neighbourhood with its beautyful beaches and laidback lifestyle. Good food (or barbeque your own in the backyard!) and bars, all just in walking distance. Couldn´t ask for more.
Im sooo happy that I got to have the experience of staying at the Mikuzi, it truly is something special <3
