“Stay here if you like bugs and cold-water showers!”

I had to wait a couple of weeks after I returned from Beaches Sandy Bay to write this review in order to "settle down" and let my anger subside. The only thing this resort has going for it is the beautiful beach and some excellent staff but at the end of the day, the resort is run down and we just didn't get good value for our dollar.

We arrived at the resort at 10pm on our first night. I had done my research and knew to expect a "dated" room. I did not expect the ants crawling up the wall, and a giant bug to make its way across the floor (not sure what kind it was). I expressed my concern to the person who checked us in and he called the front desk to see if another room was available for us. I didn't ask for an upgrade, just a room with no bugs. We were told that there was no other room available for us, the bug was stepped on and wiped up, and that was our room!

The next day, upon hearing from the bartender that the hotel was only at 60% capacity, I went back to the front desk to request a different room due to the bugs. We were given one, and happily moved our stuff, but I'm still surprised I had to make a second request and wasn't granted a new room before we had unpacked our stuff the first night! The second room was bug-free for the entire week, which was great, but it didn't have hot water when we showered too late in the afternoon!! 4:30 seemed to be the cut-off - if we showered before then we were fine but after that and we had cold water.

It took us 3 days to figure out the Kids Club schedule. There is a schedule posted outside the cafeteria, a schedule posted in the "daily newsletter", and a schedule posted just outside the Kids Club door. They are all different!! Apparently one is just for the Sesame Street characters, one is old and not updated, and the correct one is the one in the newsletter, but some activities are cancelled at random with no notice. Weird!! So finally on day 3, we took the kids to try an activity (ages 5&7). The two ladies at the kids club were unfriendly, and unwelcoming. Our kids stayed for a half hour activity, but the activity after that was going to cost us $10/kid to participate, which I was not expecting. They had several activities throughout the week that cost extra $$, just so you know.

Anyway, we picked up the kids after the half hour activity, and they did NOT want to go back for the rest of the week. We tried to get them to go one more time, the next evening, so my husband and I could have a drink at the bar. The schedule said there was a "dance party" at the kids club. They reluctanctly went, but there were only 2 other kids there so they were playing bingo instead.

My mother's intuition told me to go check on them 15 mins later. Well, sure enough, my 5yr old was crying, and I noticed another girl (not mine) crying as well. I removed my kids from the kids club and they never went back. When I asked my 5yr old why he had been crying he said he had to go to the bathroom and was scared to ask the lady. My child is NOT shy! My daughter said the ladies at the kids club weren't very nice and scared them.

So now we have a resort with bugs, cold-water showers, and a kids club my kids wouldn't use. So much for the "Beaches" experience I looked so forward to having! lol. And let me point out that I'm not one of those parents that needs a kids club to take care of the kids all week. But we've been to resorts where they've gone and not wanted to leave the kids club and, quite frankly, that gives me an hour or two to sit on the beach and read a book which I find a win-win situation!

We paid $60 for the character breakfast. We were told we couldn't take pictures at it because it was a "private photo shoot". Which brings me to the issue of the photographers on site. There were about 4-5 photographers EVERYWHERE we went. We could not shake them. They take pictures to sell in the photo shop - 5 pics for $150!! Now I don't mind the concept of the photographers, and some people may want to pay $30 for a special picture, BUT, I found it offensive when the photographers would not leave my kids alone. If I turned my back for a second, they were talking to my kids, making my kids think they were "playing" with them, then they'd grab their camera and take a picture. One photographer was even in the pool taking pictures of the kids.

Is it just me, or is it creepy for guys to be walking around snapping pictures of little kids in bathing suits all day when their parents aren't looking? I was really upset with this and often asked them to NOT take pictures of my kids. But I must be a crazy paranoid parent because I didn't hear from any other parents that this bothered them. Some even commented that their kids liked being in the "photo shoots" and feeling glamorous. So maybe its just me, but I didn't like it.

The food at this resort is fine. Nothing special, but you won't go hungry. There is one buffet, some al a carte restaurants, and a grill by the beach. The buffet often had empty dishes, and it had some ants on the tables around the food, but no one in our family got sick and we felt the food was what we expected for a 3.5 star resort. If we had paid for the 5-star Beaches Negril, we would have expected (and received) more, of course.

Speaking of Beaches Negril, we took the shuttle there twice and the resorts are like night and day. There is such a step up in terms of quality at Beaches Negril. I felt like they were the "haves" and we were the "have nots". lol! Sure, people can say they prefer the smallness of Beaches Sandy Bay but the bottom line is that Beaches Negril is nicer! But you pay more for it, of course. Quite frankly, it looked like the people staying at Beaches Negril actually got value for their money (they have little things like colouring pages and crayons at the tables for the kids, and floaty things in the pool). I think Beaches Sandy Bay is the forgotten resort in the Beaches/Sandals chain of resorts and they think of it as their "budget" hotel. For the minimal extra cost of Beaches Negril you get so much more - more and better food, a water park, nicer rooms, etc. Beaches Negril seemed to have the "Beaches" experience I was expecting to find at Beaches Sandy Bay.

Back to Beaches Sandy Bay, I'll just mention a couple more things. The swimming pool is fine, but it is located between the stage and the buffet. So there's no evening swimming unless you want an audience of people having dinner. Someone recently posted a picture of the dining tables right next to the swimming pool. I found it odd that they didn't have a row of lounge chairs around the pool - there were about 8 on the one end but that was it.

The other thing to note with the swimming pool is that it doesn't have zero-entry, so if you're travelling with babies, you'll want to bring a floaty device (or you can buy one from the store at the resort - the prices ranged from $26-73!!). I believe it was 3.5 ft at the shallow end and closer to 6ft at the deep end. The hot tub was really nice!

We absolutely LOVED the beach at this resort and spent a lot of time on it. The waves are very, very light, and it is absolutely safe for the littlest of kids. We went on the glass-bottom boat twice as our kids loved it. We also took out the water trike which was fun.

There is only one bar at this resort and there was rarely a wait for a drink. The bartenders were fantastic and the drinks were great!

At the end of the day, my frustration came from the fact that I felt ripped-off for the money we spent on this resort. We paid the premium to stay at a Beaches resort to get a family-friendly place that our kids would love. I had done my research and knew to expect a dated hotel, and I'm ok with dated. What I'm not ok with are bugs and cold-water showers, and the fact that the kids club staff was so unwelcoming and unfriendly that my kids wouldn't use it. And if that makes me a "diva", so be it, call me crazy. To me, it all came down to not getting value for my money.

So my recommendation would be to either spend the extra money and stay at Beaches Negril, or stay at a non-Beaches/Sandals resort. 7-mile beach in Negril is just fabulous, and if you're a beach lover, do find a place on this beach because you won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: The basic rooms are so small you almost need to upgrade. We had 2 double beds and no room for our l...

“Wedding event at Sandy Bay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

I spent 10 days at Beaches Sandy Bay in January. I was attending a family wedding and took my 88 year old mother along. For a family event, the resort was wonderful. The resort is relatively small with a very attentative and friendly staff. We had children in our group, so the daily Sesame Street activities were great - and we all enjoyed seeing the characters strolling around. My room (with a patio facing the sea) was on Sesame Street, so in the afternoon I saw the SS characters playing in the grass by my patio - doing somersaults, dancing - so cute.
Besides the children's activities, there was always something to do - I went snorkeling, windsurfing and sailing every day - I was always able to go up and ask for whatever piece of equipment I wanted and I got it w/o delay. Lots of people to instruct and help.
As for my mother - she became ill while there, but Michele from the front desk took excellent care of us. We called the nurse and she appeared at our room in 5 minutes. We called the dr. and he came in 10 minutes. MIchele was keeping her eye out on my mom everywhere we went - which was very appreciated by all of our group.
The food was great and plentiful - and the coffee was a huge surprise - excellent!
Overall, while the place is not of the highest quality or newest appearance, the staff more than made up for it by its helpfulness and friendliness. I would take the "family" character and personal friendliness of Beaches Sandy Bay anytime over a larger fancier accommodation.

Room Tip: Rooms further away from the pool/bar area are a bit quieter in the night.

“Don't know what's better the staff or the beach! I know it's not the front end staff!)”

Background on us.

My wife and our two children (5 and 7) booked a last minute trip to Jamaica after getting a great deal on flights.
We have travelled in the past to resorts in Mexico, dom rep and Hawaii with our kids, stayed ai and rented houses ( just FYI).

We have looked at beaches resorts for a couple of years but resisted as they seem they would have been better suited for our kids after the age of three.

Well the price of sandy bay was enticing vs negril so we opted to stay here knowing we could use the negril facilities as well and knowing our kids were still to short to go on the watersides.

We experienced two different resorts at sandy bay, one at 60% occupancy for the first five days and one at near 95% occ towards the end.

Review:

THANK GOODNESS! For the staff past the front door, if not for people like Martin and Lattoya? in events, bartenders like Revon and Oneil, watersports staff like Ivan, Patrick and Taliban, we would have checked out!

The resort is dated, the rooms are not just in need of an upgrade as they are just too small. Our first night checking in our room was right next to the highway so we had the lovely sound of traffic tearing down the road all night, not to worry the screeching ceiling fan sort of drowned out that street noise!
The few ants in the room weren't a big deal, the larger bug that crawled out from under our bed was a little more concerning. We knew we were not getting a "luxurious" honeymoon suite, but after bringing in 4 suitcases, we could not walk around the room because we had to put them all on the floor.

One star up front was Belinda, the next morning, I did not complain, I asked for a larger room as this one did not fit a family of 4. She offered an upgrade via Sandals head office for the honeymoon suite, it was a ridiculous price. I asked if they had a similar room, but with at least a closet that I could put luggage in to get it off the floor. They showed me a similar room with a closet and a bath room way smaller but it worked for us. Great!

I would rate the condition of the rooms a 2.5 if I had a few red stripes in me other wise 2 at best.

Restaurants/ bar
We did not use any of the alacarte so no opinion there, we ate most of our meals at the buffet. Snacks and western food at the sesame grill, respect to Winston and his jerk chicken!
Buffet was fine not exciting but not bad either. Breakfast was good lots of fruit, breads, omelette station, cereal, bacon, pancakes etc. 7 mornings and we never got tired of it.
Lunch was usually at the sesame grill they had jerk chicken and pork, great burgers, hot dogs fries etc. Soft serve ice cream and nachos for snacks!
Dinner every nite had a theme but was never crazy over the top, we never left hungry and looked forward to seeing what was in store.
Beach bar/ only bar
Service was awesome, drinks were well made not overly strong or sugary. Revon the bartender is one of the reasons people will cone back to this place. Not a cmwild and crazy bartender, just ... good people.
Pools/ beach/ watersports
Beach... Awesome, awesome awesome, for us! Our kids are not overly strong swimmers but loved the beach here, little lapping waves mainly from boat traffic, clear water sand bottom that you can see as far as the buoys go! It's not an overly deep beach but we always found chairs whether we wanted shade, full sun, bar access or near watersports area. and we did not have to get up to reserve them at the crack of dawn, somedays we got out at 9 some days we would do other stuff so we weren't out until 2 or 3 in the afternoon.

Main pool is the only one we used, half is about 3 ft deep so our kids played in this area. The other half slopes down to about 6 ft. It is a very small pool compared to any other all Inc. resort we have been to but because it is a smaller resort we again never had a problem getting one of the 12 or so chairs around it.
Watersports area was good kids enjoyed going on glass bottom boat ride(2x) we used the kayaks, water trikes etc. Hobie cats were always there.
Unfortunately I didn't do any snorkeling or diving this trip so I can't comment on that, but if Patrick and his crew are involved I am sure it would be great as well.

Kids club/ activities
We don't care if our kids use the club or not but if it's a good one we usually can't get them out. They tried it once for about half an hour and never wanted to go back....
The sesame street characters are a nice touch, if you want big bird and the count and Oscar you have to go to beaches negril, wouldn't have been an issue but Murphy's law ,the count is my sons favorite and saw him once at negril beaches.
Did the character breakfast and was told I couldn't take my own pictures of my family because of some poor reason, it was so they could sell us a picture of course:(
Night and stage activities were great for the whole family, not a real big budget by the looks of it but the entertainers work their butts off! Every night we were pleased, some nights, a little cheesy but the kids enjoyed it.

Grounds
Overall fine, well maintained just rough around the edges.

Management
When my wife was asked about our trip she voiced her concerns and displeasure with the value per dollar. Management then tried to address our concerns and did offer us a free night on a future stay, at least an attempt was made and I felt as though they were trying to have us as repeat customers, then ball really got dropped. As we were trying to call the front desk, again no one would answer the shift manager knocked on the door to give us our voucher, I raised my concern that I had been trying to call the front desk to get our bags picked up as we were due on the shuttle in 45 min. She reassured me she would handle the situation and not to worry, after repeatedly calling the front desk and my wife physically going up to inquire it was 15 min before departure when I went up to get a cart or something. Behind the desk a different manager said he would deal with it but don't worry the shuttle would not leave without us. I watched a bellman take the cart and not come back for 25 min, saw the shuttle come and go raised my concern but was told that wasn't our bus it was actually running late, no problem mon! Well long story short it was our bus, the other passengers informed us the driver got into an argument on the phone while driving, turned around about half an hour after they left our resort and came back to get us. Not well handled at all, at least not what I had expected from a "beaches resort"

Summary:
Again I cannot say enough about some of the staff, of all the countries we have visited , Jamaicans blew my mind with there friendliness and sincerity. It was not like other countries where we were interesting until we didn't tip!
All the best to Martin, Revon, Mandela, Ivan, Patrick and many more who made our kids feel comfortable and enjoy their time there.
Will we go back here? Prob not I will go down the beach to say hi to the people I met here but will most likely stay somewhere else. Beaches charges a premium, when I compare price to quality, better choices are available.

Pros:
Staff
Beach
Quiet when low capacity
Small and personal

Cons:
Rooms
Front end service
Dated resort
Loud and busy when full

I have to say without a doubt, if you have children and are planning a trip to Negril this is the resort to go to. The staff are amazingly hospitable and personable. They are so friendly and will remember your children's name by your 2 nd day. We went last may and were so sad to leave that we rebooked for following January, while we were still there. Well now we just returned from our 2nd trip there and had rebooked again for next January. We've only been home a week and miss the atmosphere so much that we called last night and booked AGAIN for this July! January seemed too long to wait to go back! Lol. You have the option of going to the bigger Sandals just down the road for their restaurants, entertainment, and water park everyday. The shuttle runs hourly. The bigger resort is beautiful and HUGE, and the kids love the water park, but it is overly crowded with crying babies tons of people, and lots of bees by their soda stations that we always looked forward to going back to Sandy Bay, where everyone knew your name! ;-) Michelle, the Resort Manager is so gracious and truly accommodating to any of your needs. And our favorite employee, Kerron is a wonderful entertainer and was so kind to our children. We hope they are both still there we we go back. You won't find another resort where the staff will join you for breakfast, even on their time off, to have great conversations! The beach is beautiful, never a line at the bar, will always find a clean beach towel, and great variety of food, especially if you have children. Beaches Sandy Bay is a hidden gem that we are so grateful we found, and plan to return as long as we can!! Danielle Ford

“Not for Adults”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

I'll keep this brief and hopefully helpful:

Staff: All around very good, no complaints in any way. Special thanks to Revon, Denise, Nedleh, Alicia, Deborah, Captain Jack Sparrow, Big Rick and Taliban.

Food: no Lobster, Crab or Fillet Mignon otherwise very good food and selection.

Beach: Very good like all of Jamaica

Bar: only one and it has no chairs, night club for kids till 11:30 by which time everyone ends up going to bed. Also no Crown Royal as claimed on website.

Pool: small and placed between seating area and stage, not much chance for evening swim.

Entertainment: pretty well aimed at kids only, 3 Sesame street dinner shows (felt like more) no adult activities to speak of.

Room: Tired and needs update but you only sleep there and it was extremely clean.

Conclusion: Parents seemed generally quite pleased with the choice, if you have no children or can get away without them you will be extremely bored here, I would have recommended Sandals but as we were kicked out of the Sandals for looking at the pool (without paying $85), we figured they'd be better off without ever getting another dollar from us again. Go to the Jewel and get your money's worth on a proper vacation instead.
